  • Texas firm pitches 160-foot cell tower

    Kevin Wilson

STAFF WRITER [email protected] Wednesday’s question to Clovis’ planning and zoning commission: Is a stronger cell phone network worth the sight of a 160-foot tower? The answer: Wait until December. An hour-long meeting of the commission included a presentation from a Texas-based tower construction company and a national cell phone provider that serves Clovis. Both called customer data demands central in a request for construction of a 160-foot cell phone tower on a lot in the north portion of Hilltop Plaza near Main Str...

Staff writer [email protected] The Lady Rams won’t be caught napping by the 8 a.m. start of pool play in the Class 4A state volleyball tournament today in Rio Rancho. Portales coach Ruth Chavez has scheduled early practices throughout the season, according to senior setter and team captain Brooke Lopez. “We’re used to what it feels like to be up early in the morning,” Lopez said at practice Wednesday. “We know what we need to do to get ourselves awake and ready for the game. They had a family bond.” In her junior year, which saw Clovis finish 29-1 and reach the Class 5A semifinals, the 5-foot-11 Briggins played all 30 games and averaged 2.6 points and... Full story

While those items have been submitted to a crime lab in Santa Fe, “it may be several weeks before any findings about the evidence are returned.” Ariel Ulibarri, 23, was found dead about...

  • Slaying victim’s sister: ‘She did everything for her kids’

Editor [email protected] Leanna Montano has a request: “I want people to quit lying about my sister and making up their own horror stories.” The tragedy of Ariel Ulibarri’s slaying in a Clovis city park on Sunday has put enough strain on those who loved her; they’re tired of hearing wild rumors that only send police “in circles” and delay finding her killer. Montano has begun speaking to the media in hopes of clearing up the rumors, but also to let the community k...

  • Iran's nuclear intentions not to be trusted

Russia just tilted the table in favor of Iran in negotiations to limit its nuclear capacity in exchange for easing international economic sanctions on the country — as if the mullahs who call the shots in Iran really needed any extra help. As negotiators representing the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council plus Germany scramble to reach an agreement by a Nov. 24 deadline, the Russians this week separately sealed a deal with Iran that appears to open a way for Tehran to produce fuel for its own n... Full story

  • No new information released in homicide

Staff report Local law enforcement officials declined again Wednesday to release any additional information on the case of a Clovis woman found dead Sunday morning at the Goodwin Lake Walking Trails. More than three dozen questions were submitted Tuesday to the Clovis Police Department regarding the slaying of Ariel Ulibarri, 23. Police did not answer any of them. In response to the questions, Lt. Roman Romero of the multi-agency Major Crimes Unit said he understood the desire for information on the case, “but the i...

  • McManigal: Authority belongs in our hands

When I look at the offices that were up for grabs in the recent election, or hear of the political appointments made to fill other positions, I see a lot of jobs that simply shouldn’t exist, much less be filled. Not even with “the right person.” It doesn’t matter how good a person is when what they are doing shouldn’t be done. We don’t argue over who should be placed in charge of human sacrifice to the Aztec gods. Well, most of us don’t. So why select representativ... Full story

  • Render: And now for the rest of the story

The U.S. Marines celebrated their 239th birthday on Monday and Veterans Day was Tuesday. Clovis still has a few World War II vets left, but not many. Our Korean War survivors are dwindling and it’s a rare Vietnam vet who’s not in his 70. Here’s a Vietnam story you might find interesting. In June of 1967, during combat operations in Vietnam, the Platoon Leader of Alfa Co “A,” 3rd Recon Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, found himself and his men in serious trouble. This Marine sec... Full story

  • Brandon: Sunbeam experience lighted way

    Judy Brandon

As a child I was involved in Sunbeams at church. Sunbeams was a mission organization for children. We sang about being a Sunbeam for Jesus and bringing light into the world. When my family moved from Kansas City to New Mexico, one lady was saying goodbye to my parents and then she turned to me, patted me on the head and said, “Now Judy, you be a good little Sunbeam in New Mexico.” I took that seriously. Sunbeams had an important calling and I wanted to live up to that calling....

  • Brown: Farmer's to-do list never seems to end

Feed the dog and bring in the mail. Yeah, there’s a bit more to it than that. When considering an overnight departure from the place, a farmer must find someone to check up on things while away. This job can’t be trusted to just anyone, and just anyone probably wouldn’t want it anyhow. It starts relatively standard. Take a look at the house, check on the dogs. Make sure they have feed and water, and hopefully they haven’t had any close encounters with a porcupine. If said encounter has occurred, please remove quills as need... Full story
