With five-full blown “Messiah” productions behind him, he maintains the one taking the stage at 3 p.m. Sunday in Clovis’ Marshall Auditorium is “nothing short of amazing....

  • Cold-weather gear hot items at area stores

    Thomas Garcia

Staff writer Eastern New Mexico was dusted with its first snow of the season Wednesday, sending residents to fetch heavy coats and into hardware stores for pipe-repair parts and space heaters. The storm system produced reports of up to a half-inch of snow two miles northwest of Clovis and two-tenths of an inch three miles southwest of Portales, but most of Curry and Roosevelt counties had just enough snow to frost the grass. A half-inch of snow was reported in Quay County three miles northeast of Tucumcari, according to the...

  • Cantwell: Prayer call not to be ignored

Election 2014 is over. But is it really? Politics is like a roller coaster. The party that is up will soon be down. Is there anything God requires of us, his children, to do between elections? I believe we are called to pray for those whom we have elected to recognize their authority is from God. A perfect example of this is Solomon. link Pat Cantwell In 1034 BC, Solomon began constructing the temple, the House of the Lord, in Jerusalem. It took seven years to complete and its dedication occurred during the Feast of...

  • Brown: Farmer's to-do list never seems to end

Feed the dog and bring in the mail. Yeah, there’s a bit more to it than that. When considering an overnight departure from the place, a farmer must find someone to check up on things while away. This job can’t be trusted to just anyone, and just anyone probably wouldn’t want it anyhow. It starts relatively standard. Take a look at the house, check on the dogs. Make sure they have feed and water, and hopefully they haven’t had any close encounters with a porcupine. If said en...

  • Veterans Day parade set for Saturday

    Kevin Wilson

STAFF WRITER [email protected] When asked what impact cold weather might have on Saturday’s Veterans Day Parade, organizer John Montano remembered a parade standard. “One year, we had snow and it was hard to get from Hilltop to Commerce Way,” Montano said. “Some of those floats, we had to get a pickup to pull them up. We kept getting calls asking if we were going to call it off. A commander from the Veterans of Foreign Wars post, he told me, ‘We didn’t call the war off in the snow in Korea.’ “I said, ‘OK, the parade...

  • Teachers, administration dissatisfied with evaluation methods

Staff writer [email protected] Teachers and school administrators agree New Mexico’s system of teacher evaluation is unfair and puts too much emphasis on standardized test scores. Their views are similar to those of the New Mexico National Education Association, which sued New Mexico’s Public Education Department last September. The case has a request for a hearing this month, but no specific date has been set. According to an NEA press release, the teacher advocate organization is taking legal action because the eva...
