The night of Nov. 6 was the celebratory moment for Democrat Michelle Lujan Grisham. She had the time to thank the people who made it possible, a few hours to enjoy the applause. Then, it was off to sleep and rest because now it gets real. Now comes governing. The key to a successful term as governor for Lujan Grisham — something New Mexico needs desperately — is to choose a great transition team and begin assembling a Cabinet, immediately set policy and legislative priorities and reach out to legislative leaders from bot...
CLOVIS - Ryan Schaap isn't crying over spilt milk - he's "furious." The manager of Highland Dairy told The News this week his operation has lost about 15,000 gallons of milk daily since the Air Force advised the water serving the farm in southern Curry County was contaminated with chemicals associated with past military firefighting activities. The cows still need to be milked but nobody will buy their wares, imperiling the dairy and its 40 employees, Schaap said. "There is...
CLOVIS - A sentencing hearing on last year's confessed library shooter is scheduled for next year. But before then, the judge will take some time to consider arguments presented Tuesday as to the teenager's eligibility for rehabilitation instead of life in prison. Nathaniel Jouett, 17, appeared calm and did not speak during a motion hearing that lasted all morning in the Curry County Courthouse, starting late as the court had to wait for availability in a courtroom large...
PORTALES — Every football team wants its last game of the season to be a win. But they’d prefer it were in a championship game, not the regular season. Eastern New Mexico wrapped for the 2018 season on Saturday afternoon, beating Western Oregon 19-14 at Greyhound Stadium. There will be no playoffs for ENMU, just plenty of optimism for 2019. A big part of the reason Eastern is already looking ahead to next year is that this year began with a parade of nationally-ranked tea...
CLOVIS — City commissioners will consider approval of updated working terms with the Clovis Police Department, including a small pay increase, when they meet at 5:15 p.m. Thursday at the North Annex of the Clovis-Carver Public Library. The agreement between Clovis city management and the Clovis Police Officers Association would run through Aug. 15, 2021, and calls for a 2.5 percent pay increase in the first pay period following its approval by all parties. The Clovis Police Department does collective bargaining for its employ...
CLOVIS — Patriotism is in the news again. This time, it’s at the heart of a project aimed at involving Clovis students in the civic process. Curry County Manager Lance Pyle said he came up with the idea a couple of months ago. “The United States Pledge and New Mexico Salute is something that brings us together,” Pyle wrote in a message to The News. “This is an opportunity to involve our future leaders in the County Commission meetings and assist them on their public speaking skills.” When commissioners meet on Tuesday, the Pl...
A little over a month ago, it seemed Melrose’s football team was in trouble. The Buffaloes were 1-5 and injury-riddled, their season in doubt. But they got healthy, tore off a string of victories — including a big one over powerhouse Gateway Christian on Oct. 19 — and well, what do you know, the four-time defending state eight-man champs are right where they usually are at this point of the season, in the state tournament’s semifinal round. They will host Gateway on Friday at 7 p.m., with a chance to play for a fifth consecu...
CARLSBAD — One meet into the prep swimming season, the Clovis High swim teams have a pretty good jump on qualifying for the state championship meet. In all, seven Wildcat swimmers registered nine qualifying times in six different events at the Caveman Invite, and the girls’ A and B relay teams both registered qualifying times in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle, although each school is only allowed one relay team in each event at state. The girls team finished in first pla...
MULESHOE — A fire on Avenue D in Muleshoe on Monday destroyed a home and briefly impacted activities at Dillman Elementary School. Muleshoe Superintendent R.L. Richards said smoke from the house fire inundated the school. That resulted in the 400-plus students being moved to the gymnasium where there was no smoke. Richards said electricity to the school was out for about 40 minutes; he did not know if that was a direct result of the smoke in the building. He said the gym was also without power, but it has skylights so it wasn...
RICHARDSON, Texas — Eastern New Mexico sophomore Alivia Lewis is the Lone Star Conference’s women’s basketball defensive player of the week, according to a release from the league office. Lewis helped ENMU go 2-0 in the LSC/RMAC Challenge. Against New Mexico Highlands, Lewis tied her career-high with 11 rebounds and set a new career best with four steals. She also had three blocks in the 66-38 win. Against Fort Lewis College, Lewis had seven points and nine rebounds. ENMU...
Snow - eastern New Mexico's and west Texas' old friend or foe, depending on your perspective - returned to the area for the first time in nearly two years late Sunday. The snowfall was likely celebrated by students at Grady, Melrose, Farwell, Texico, Muleshoe and Fort Sumner schools, which either canceled or delayed classes Monday as a result of the overnight storm. The 175 people in the Clovis area who were left without power, according to Xcel Energy spokesman Wes Reeves,...
PORTALES — In Friday’s season opener, the Eastern New Mexico women’s basketball team led for most of the last three quarters. Saturday was quite a different story for the Greyhounds, who had to rally from way down in the fourth quarter. The result was essentially the same — Eastern won again, improving to 2-0. The Hounds trailed by as many as 13 in the second half of Saturday night’s Lone Star/Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Challenge finale against Fort Lewis at Greyhound...

On this date ... 1968: All former and present members of the Broadview Church of the Nazarene had been invited to Homecoming day. A covered dish luncheon was planned at the 4-H building in Broadview. A closing service was set to feature Rev. E. Groege Greiner. Greiner was an evangelist, singer, musician and children's worker. He was an elder in the Church of the Nazarene. He'd been pastoring since 1951. He sang baritone and was accompanied by his wife, Kathleen, on the piano....

PORTALES — Like the events that populate it, the college cross country season is less a sprint than a marathon. There’s often little you can do in the last 10 percent of the season to override what you did in the first 90 percent. Entering Saturday’s Division II South Central Regional championship, the Eastern New Mexico women’s and men’s teams can still accomplish plenty of goals. But there’s no illusion either team will end Saturday with a bid to the Dec. 1 national champion...

Joni Anthony has no idea why wild cats seem to like her yard so much. On Tuesday morning, there were at least 12 out there, she said. “My neighbor said she gets them, too,” said Anthony, who lives in the 1500 block of Clovis’ Comer Drive. “There must be like 30 cats running around here.” Anthony said she does nothing to encourage the critters. Just the opposite. “I don’t feed them,” she said. “I try to chase them off my stuff, they don’t run. They just sit there and spit at you.” They won’t go away. “I got a dog,” she said...
I was a lousy medical student. I worked very hard but struggled. However, I came into my own as a psychiatric resident. My first job after my training was with a state-run mental health facility, the Behavior Health Service (BHS). One of my assignments was to start a small psychiatric hospital. My confidence was fully restored during by this time. Some even accused me of being arrogant, to which I would reply, “It’s hard to be modest when you know you’re great.” Dr. Don Fisher was the medical director of BHS. One day I asked...
As the first person in my immediate family to attend a university, one of the most important quotes I ever read came from a random person on Twitter. The tweet said, “First-generation college students: There will come a time when you feel that you do not belong. Rest assured, you do.” In the almost three years since I have started college, there have been plenty of times when I felt that sense of not belonging. I felt it when seeing students with their alumni parents, when I had difficulties navigating regular college cha...
SANTA ROSA — There may have been mixed results nationally, with the Democrats winning the House and the Republicans increasing their majority in the Senate, but here in New Mexico, an indisputably blue tidal wave overtook the midterm elections. I know it’s due at least in part to Susana Martinez’ unpopularity these days, but if I were a New Mexico Republican, I’d blame it on President Trump. He made this election all about him, and New Mexicans rejected both his agenda and his divisive tactics by taking it out on the Republic...
Andy Becker knew what he wanted to do with his life just one month into his senior year of high school. He told his parents he wanted to enlist in the military and help defend the nation against those responsible for the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. That's exactly what he did. In seven years as a Special Operations pilot, he flew more than 450 combat missions in nine deployments to Afghanistan, Iraq and other danger zones. He was awarded 22 Air Force service medals, The...
I want you to be safe. I hope you don't do things to endanger yourself and others, and I want you prepared — everywhere you go — in case someone else means you harm. In the past couple of weeks there have been at least two cases of some loser deciding to murder people who were harming no one. I will not boost the fame of these murderers by using their names; calling them losers is clear and accurate. In one case, the loser chose his victims based on a delusion that their rel...
There’s something about November that seems to bring out the best in us humans. Maybe we can trace it back almost 400 years to that first Thanksgiving in Plymouth. Or maybe tempers naturally cool down as the mercury drops. Whatever the reason, there is never a shortage of good causes to support this time of year, and this weekend we have a slew of them in eastern New Mexico, starting with the annual used book sale that benefits the Friends of the Portales Public Library. Along with invaluable assistance from Cannon Air F...
