  • Farm animals make good pets, but pets don’t make good farm animals

Country kids make pets of most every animal that follows them home – or they manage to capture. The first pet I remember other than the usual dogs and cats was a chicken. We weren’t always really good at coming up with names, but everybody always had one. The chicken’s name was Peep. Peep started life in a red wagon in our living room ‘cuz it was cold outside. We gave her fresh oats and searched the yard for little pieces of gravel for her craw. When the weather warmed we caught grasshoppers and bugs for her. She becam...

CNJ staff photo: Tony Bullocks Tumbleweeds cover a car in the driveway of a home on Circle Drive on Monday. Sabrina Farmer said the tumbleweed problem is the worst she’s seen in the eight years she lived on Circle Drive. This year it seems like the piles of tumbleweeds at her Circle Drive home are bigger and the chore of removing the foreign invader endless, she... Full story

  • Appointment of Clinton not well planned

Freedom New Mexico The rumors could not be more rampant that President-elect Barack Obama will appoint his chief rival in the primaries, New York Sen. Hillary Clinton, as secretary of state. If the purpose is to introduce a bit of drama into the Cabinet and tighten up the domestic support of Democrats who still would have preferred Hillary as their party’s nominee, it might be a shrewd move. On almost all other grounds the speculation — which apparently has roots in the Obama camp — is more than a little p... Full story

  • Official: Weapons costly, too few

The military must end its quest for “exquisite” weapon systems that are too costly, take years to design and build, and don’t reach troops fast enough, or in quantities large enough, to address ever-changing threats. The critic here isn’t a Washington think tank or a beltway consultant but Marine Corps Gen. James E. Cartwright, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs, the U.S. military’s second highest ranking officer. Cartwright recalled the wry observation made by some critics of current weapon-buying practices that, by 2015,...

    Argen Duncan

Eastern New Mexico University’s president predicts the school will be able to weather legislative funding cuts this year, but will have problems if decreases continue in subsequent years. At Monday’s board of regents meeting, President Steven Gamble said he anticipates a 5 percent funding cut all around in the 2009 Legislative session, but the school’s budget can handle the decreases. “It will be with some pain, but we can withstand them,” Gamble said. However, if the 2010 session brings more funding cuts, he continued... Full story

  • Nov. 25, 2008

HOLLYWOOD--God bless America, and how’s everybody? • Barack Obama got adoring press coverage last week as Newsweek compared him to Abe Lincoln and Time compared him to Franklin Roosevelt. President Bush was miffed by the comparisons. Sure Abe Lincoln and Franklin Roosevelt led the country out of a civil war and a great depression, but did they ever lead the country into them? • Somali pirates seized a Saudi oil tanker in the ocean last week. That’s exactly how the Royal Navy started four hundred years ago aga...
