Whether you call it the “Capitol protest,” the “insurrection” or the “riot,” it seems those who entered the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 are deservedly and appropriately being punished for their actions. Most of those charged are being sentenced to probation, fines or a few weeks in jail. About two dozen have been sentenced so far. Former Clovis physician Leonard Gruppo, for example, expressed remorse and received 24 months probation and a $3,000 fine after pleading guilty to charges that he illegally entered the Capitol dur...

TATUM - It's not just that Tatum's football team won a state championship on Friday night. Yes, the Coyotes did that with their 22-14 overtime win over Melrose in the 8-man finals. And that - to use a Ron Burgundy-ism - is kind of a big deal. But that was just the end of the story, the climactic scene. The "how" seems almost as important as the "what," because Tatum was on the verge of losing the game, then appeared to have won it on the fourth quarter's final play, then won...
LITTLEFIELD — Muleshoe survived a back-and-forth game with Brownfield on Thursday, and the Mules are on to the second round of the Texas Class 3A Division I playoffs. Senior quarterback Zach Hasley threw a pair of touchdown passes, including a 32-yarder to junior Irvin Torres in the fourth quarter as the Mules outlasted the Cubs 21-17 in the bi-district round at Littlefield H.S. Their reward is a date with defending 3A-I champion and third-ranked Jim Ned (11-0) at 3:30 p.m. (CST) on Friday at Lubbock’s Lowery Stadium. The...
RIO RANCHO - Unfortunately, it was a short stay for Portales in the Class 4A state volleyball tournament. Seeded No. 8, the Lady Rams faced top seed Hope Christian in Friday's opening round and lost to the Huskies 25-16, 25-18, 25-13 before being eliminated by fourth-seeded Gallup 25-21, 24-26, 25-22, 25-20 later in the day. "Things just didn't go right," first-year Lady Rams coach Jacki Bailey said. "But I'm really proud of what we did this season." Two other members of...
RIO RANCHO — Melrose took care of its business on Friday in the Class 1A state volleyball tournament, and the Lady Buffs were in line to reach their eighth consecutive state final and possibly with a fourth crown during that time. The top-seeded defending state champions cruised past eighth-seeded Pine Hill 25-10, 25-15, 25-18 in a first-round match on Friday morning at Rio Rancho H.S., then summarily dismissed District 6-1A rival and fourth-seeded Fort Sumner 25-16, 25-8, 25-11 during an afternoon quarterfinal clash at R...
On this date ... 1931: Letters to Santa Claus were beginning to appear in area newspapers, including The Portales Valley News. A sampling: A boy named Ben from Kenna wanted a boy doll, a barn full of animals and a sled. He was 7 and in the second grade. Herbert Lewis Morphis of Portales asked for a tractor, truck and candy, plus nuts and fruit. Herbert also asked Santa to remember his little sister Athel Lois, 2, who wanted a doll and a set of dishes. Nadine McCabe of Elida wanted a baby doll “about 22 inches tall,” and a l...

PORTALES — An indictment of two livestock sellers six years ago included an accusation of 139 criminal charges ranging from fraud to racketeering and forgery. The case came to a conclusion last month, with Portales’ Calvin and Darcie Pareo each pleading to just two misdemeanor charges of duties of licenses and paying $2,103 in court fines and fees. The 139 charges were whittled down to the two misdemeanor charges and 50 felony charges that were dismissed as part of the plea agreement. A jury trial against the Pareos, sch...

She slammed down her white privilege like you’d slam down an American Express black card. Which is to say, with supreme confidence. Two months after posting video of herself in the mob of right-wing thugs who stormed the U.S. Capitol, Jenna Ryan went on Twitter to taunt her detractors. “Definitely not going to jail,” she wrote. “Sorry I have blonde hair white skin a great job a great future and I’m not going to jail. Sorry to rain on your hater parade.” This month, Ryan...
Worried that federal spending was getting out of control, Sen. Everett Dirksen warned in 1973 that “a billion here, and a billion there, and pretty soon you’re talking about real money.” Dirksen’s quote seems quaint these days, in light of new spending passed or proposed by Congress to combat and counteract the impacts of the pandemic. The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, passed under former President Donald Trump, had $1.9 trillion in new federal spending. That was followed by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Secur...
I speak four languages fluently, read a fifth and am learning a sixth. I taught Spanish, French and Italian, and use all three languages on a daily basis in my immigration practice. I say this not to brag as much as to display how important language and its correct usage is to me. I’ve seen a lot of that dishonesty lately, with people making up words like “Latinx” and using plural pronouns for a single person who might have multiple identities but can only claim one complete s...
While Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham was in Scotland touting the need to address climate change, President Joe Biden, at the recent G-20, pleaded with other nations to increase their oil production to lower the price of gasoline. Maybe the governor should tell the president that New Mexico could produce the extra oil if he would quit strangling energy production with his brave new government regulations. The governor should take note at how green energy is destroying Europe. What began as an optimistic power policy in nations...
I first began to suspect that everything I was told about the census was bogus several years ago when the Census Bureau continued to undercount the homeless. At least it claimed to be undercounting them. Every year during a Republican Administration the bureau would report they undercounted the homeless, with the following caveat: “We know they are out there. We just can’t find them to count. It never occurred to them that maybe they had an accurate count. Their computer mod...

The awards for Adriana Munoz and Eleisa Munoz, no relation, were voted on by the state's 14 district attorneys. Adriana Munoz was awarded "Investigator of the Year" with special attention given to her work obtaining a confession in a 2015 double homicide cold case and her assistance...
SANTA FE — New Mexico on Friday became the third state to make COVID-19 booster vaccines available to all adults 18 and over, following an executive order from Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham. The governor also kept New Mexico among the few states that continue to have an indoor facemask mandate, as a public health order requiring them regardless of vaccination status through at least Dec. 10. California and Colorado are the only other states that have made booster shots eligible to all adults. New Mexicans 18 and older may s...
PORTALES — The Clovis-Portales area is expected to host the state’s third-largest market for legalized recreational cannabis projects when retail sales begin in April, but snags with the licensing of growers in the state could mean shortages of products on retail shelves. That’s according to Curt Jaynes, who plans to be a grower of marijuana crops in the area. Jaynes spoke on a panel forecasting the legalized cannabis industry for the area during a Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce luncheon Friday at Eastern New Mexic...
The federal infrastructure bill that received Congressional approval on Nov. 5 includes funding to complete the federal share of the cost of the Eastern New Mexico Rural Water Project, according to a news release from U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-NM. President Joe Biden plans to sign the infrastructure package Monday. The water project includes construction pipelines and facilities to bring water to Curry and Roosevelt counties from Ute Reservoir in Quay County. The water project was estimated in 2009 to cost $500 million,...
