    Jack King

The Hotel Clovis could be up for public auction in September. Photo by Eric Kluth. The Hotel Clovis could be on the block in September if back taxes are not paid, County Treasurer Linda Hall said Wednesday. Hall said collection of back taxes on the hotel was turned over to the state last year. The taxes still have not been paid and the state Taxation and Revenue Department could auction the building in September, she said. Robert Rubin of the Taxation and Revenue Department confirmed that the Hotel Clovis is among those...

    Darrell Todd Maurina

Flags are important to veterans — especially at national holidays. So when the Wheatland Cemetery asked AMVETS Post No. 14 of Clovis to help replace the flags used to decorate veteran’s graves, the organization decided to help out by replacing every one of the miniature flags used at graves in the cemetery north of Grady. “It’s not a chore to us,” said Michael Williams, Judge Advocate for the AMVETS post. “We try to do everything we can to help the veterans whether they are deceased or still alive.” The Wheatland cem... Full story

  • Hobby for the cure

    Eric Butler

In the sanctuary of Trinity Lutheran Church, little wooden angels hang from the speakers. Back in the Sunday school rooms, children fit together pieces of wood into a hippopotamus or a camel marionette. Visitors to the church are often handed a small wooden cross with the word “Jesus” on it — miniatures of a much larger cross which hangs in the church lobby. Those carvings, done by Gary Kruckeberg, seem to be in every room of the church, and probably mean more to some members of the congregation than Kruckeberg reali...

    Janet Bresenham

In a century of ministry, activities and memories at the First Baptist Church of Elida, one key focus has not changed. And when the church celebrated its 100th anniversary last weekend in the small Roosevelt County town, the executive director of the New Mexico Baptist Convention praised the congregation for maintaining their priorities. “Dr. Claude Cone brought a message on how the purpose of the church is to exalt Christ, to exalt the Savior and equip people to win others to Christ,” said the Rev. Herb Gage, who has served...

This summer marks a century of service for Elida’s two remaining active churches: the First Baptist Church of Elida and the Elida Methodist Church. So when the past and present members of the First Baptist Church celebrated their 100th anniversary last weekend, they were joined at their Sunday luncheon and afternoon service by their Methodist neighbors. During Labor Day weekend, the Baptists plan to return the favor when the Methodists observe their church’s centennial anniversary, according to the Rev. Herb Gage, pastor of...

In addition, the area took three second-place finishes, a third and a fourth. Overall, 17 of the 48 teams in the event were from the Clovis-Portales area. Come August, Johnson hopes his remaining nucleus can prove that it belongs in that class as well. Johnson and six Ram seniors from last year’s Class 3A runner up squad were at the third annual 3A North-South All-Star football game at Las Vegas, N.M. Les Long scored both South touchdowns in the 16-12 victory, making Johnson perfect in All-Star play. “It was a great experience,” said Johnson, the he...

  • Love requires sacrifice and unselfishness

    Joan Clayton

“Glad to see ya!” Uncle Steve said as I hugged and kissed him. With our help he had lived 10 good years in his home alone, enjoying life despite his handicaps. Aunt Opal had died previously and they had no children. “Take this and buy you something pretty.” Uncle Steve has always had a heart as big as all outdoors. Emmitt drove him to town to take care of his business and he liked for me to go along. Back home I kissed him on the cheek. “See ya tomorrow!” Uncle Steve leaned over for a kiss, saying “Thank you!” We took...

  • Pepe is back, let the celebration begin

    Helena Rodriguez

Pepe is home again. Our precious little dog who disappeared from our front yard on July 1 is back home, thanks to a woman only a few streets from our house who responded to our lost Chihuahua ad in this newspaper on Thursday. It’s a big relief to know Pepe is safe and sound now. I thought I’d never see our beloved family pet again. This time last week, I was in a depression and was getting sympathies from well-wishers who read my column about his disappearance. “I hope you find Pepe!” “I’m sorry to hear about Pepe!” strangers...

  • Mainstreet to reopen YAM

    Mike Linn

Babe Morgan said he remembers the Yam as the Saturday night hot spot in Portales about “50, 60 some odd years ago.” But recently members of the Portales Mainstreet Organization gave him a reason to see a future for age-old theater, located in the 200 block of South Main Street. “There wasn’t a show I missed when it (the Yam) was open,” said Morgan, who has worked most of his life at Herb’s barber shop directly across the street from the Yam. “It was the happening place on Saturday nights, with large crowds up and down Main...
