Marcus Smith is no stranger to the Llano Estacado. Originally from Hereford, Texas, Smith migrated southwest across state lines in 2003 - a young man eager to play football with a scholarship for the ENMU Greyhounds. He had dreams to coach football, which he did briefly while pursuing his Master's in counseling. Career opportunities upon graduation shifted him away from his dreams of coaching and propelled him into a career in academic and mental health counseling. One dream...
PORTALES ¬– Guards Paxton Culpepper and Davian Lucero were noticeably quiet in the first half against Pojoaque on Thursday night, both going scoreless. That all changed quickly when play resumed. As a child, lying was something I rarely did. This was a function of two things: being Catholic and being lazy. But perhaps the most compelling reason not to lie is that you will always be outed. It may not happen immediately, but there is simply no way to go through life telling lie after lie without someone eventually figuring out that you did not serve with honor in Vietnam, Sen. Blumenthal, that your version of your wife’s tragic death was not accurate, President Biden, a...
Long after it has run its course on TV, the show "Yellowstone" will provide fodder for countless Ph.D. candidates in whiteness studies. In certain precincts, the verdict about the smash hit that has spawned a cottage industry of spin-offs is in: The show is about whiteness, and particularly white grievance. In a recent podcast about "Yellowstone," Sam Sanders of New York Magazine said, "Kevin Costner sets up the imagery of conservative white grievance without any of the negati...
Last month, Grace Stanke, a 23-year-old nuclear engineering student from Wausau, Wis., was crowned Miss America 2023. Stanke is a beautiful, blond-hair'ed woman who is obviously gifted in math and science. She was crowned by her predecessor, Emma Broyles, Miss Alaska, who became the first woman from her state to win the title. But don’t be surprised if you missed it – for the second straight year, the pageant was streamed online and didn’t air on television. A scandal in 20...
You probably hear a lot of complaints about government corruption these days -- especially over these past several years. I don't see any corruption; I see government acting as it was designed to work. When an institution is built on a foundation of theft, power, and coercion why act surprised when those things happen? Even the Constitution is at fault, so you can't fix it by "going back" to the Constitution. As abolitionist Lysander Spooner once said, the Constitution “has e...
As I came through the door at the groomers, I could see her cute and freshly cropped face looking at me from a kennel. Miss Maggie had her day at the beauty parlor and she was happy to see her daddy. As the owner of the shop handed her over I received rapid-fire puppy kisses and the shop’s help squealed with delight. The shop owner said she got quite a few while she was grooming her. Two things that mystify me were how she was being so good and patient in the kennel and how s...
Laura Leal was cooking at Leal’s restaurant late last year when the phone rang. With a staffing shortage, she didn’t hesitate to answer the call. It was from a competitor. “Are you a manager at Leal’s?” the caller asked. “Are you happy at your job? Because if you’re not, our restaurant is hiring managers.” The owner, cook and chief chili taster of one of Clovis’ more popular eateries laughs when she tells the story. But any business manager these days knows about the serious challenge of trying to hire or retain staff. Non...

CLOVIS -- An anti-abortion ordinance designed to keep abortion clinics from setting up shop in Clovis will become the city’s newest ordinance with a 7 to 0 vote of approval at Thursday’s regular session of the city commission. District 2 Commissioner Lauren Rowley abstained from the vote making the final tally 7 to 0. “I still think we need to wait until after the legislative session,” Rowley said of her abstention after the meeting. The proposed ordinance was tabled the first time it came up for a vote in November. An atte...

His sudden and unexpected death on Dec. 4 at the age of 68 left a hole in many lives, including area triathletes and legions of students he taught in physics and chemistry classes at Clovis...
