PORTALES — Portales’ football team is headed back to the final four. The Rams earned a return visit to the state 4A semifinal round with a 64-32 victory over Grants on Saturday at Greyhound Stadium. By Portales head coach Jaime Ramirez’s own admission, it was a far-from-perfect victory, filled with penalties and turnovers, but the Rams got it done — thanks in part to six interceptions by their defense — and they are moving on to the semis, where they will host Taos in a 1 p.m....

Goodbyes can be difficult. I’ve learned that I’m so much better at hellos. Today marks the start of my last week as publisher at Clovis Media. My family and I arrived in eastern New Mexico a little more than three years ago. The communities here were extraordinarily welcoming, and we’ve made some great friends over that span. My life in journalism has taken me on an exciting voyage that has included Delaware, St. Louis, upstate New York, two cities in North Carolina, Las V...

DENVER - The Eastern New Mexico cross country teams concluded their seasons Saturday at the South Central Regional championship meet. It's still up in the air whether senior Mercy Rotich has extended hers. Rotich finished 15th Saturday in the loaded regional 6K, crossing the finish line in 22:18.7. Plenty still has to take place before Rotich, who won the region and finished sixth at nationals in 2016, knows if she'll get a bid to the Dec. 1 national meet in Pittsburgh....

HOBBS — It may seem like, ho-hum another Farwell football victory. 10 in a row; so, what else is new? There were, however, a couple of twists in Farwell’s 53-6 shellacking of Van Horn Friday night. The game was played in New Mexico, at Hobbs High School’s big stadium. And it was the opening round of Texas 2A D2 playoffs for the Steers, who were the last area team to enter postseason play. They scored early and often, quickly putting their stamp on a Bi-District round victory that sent them into next weekend’s Area round,...

The Staff of The News|Updated Nov 17, 2018

RIO RANCHO — There’s a reason Texico wins title after title after title when state volleyball time comes. It’s that the Wolverines never emphasize winning title after title after title. Their latest conquest came Saturday in Class 2A, as the Wolverines made quick work of Dulce 25-18, 25-22, 25-12 to finish the year 19-5 and win a fifth-straight championship at the Santa Ana Star Center. That’s now 11 in the last 13 seasons, with the current streak and their six consecu...
