  • House fire total loss, but no injuries reported

STAFF REPORT A Portales residential home on the 1900 block of Garnet Road was destroyed after it caught fire on Saturday. The home was owned by two adults, according to Portales Fire Department Battalion Chief Lance Hill. Staff photo: Kurt Munz-Raper Portales firefighters work to put out a fire on a home on Garnet Road Saturday afternoon. The two adults were not harmed, Hill said, but the property was declared a loss. “There were two vehicles in the garage which were a t...

  • Pages Past — Nov. 20

On this date ... 1956: An unmasked bandit held up Tom Finley’s service station about 3 a.m. in Texico. Authorities said he took the cash register and escaped with about $400. The cash register was recovered behind the Texico High School gymnasium. It still contained almost $50 in coins. Pop Spurlin, who was on duty at the time of the robbery, said the robber’s gun “sure looked big.” Spurlin told authorities the bandit ordered him to open the register; but Spurlin said he was on temporary duty and did not have a key. When the...

  • Cutting costs of hepatitis C drug key to saving lives

New Mexicans spent $36.5 million last year treating a fraction of the state’s Medicaid hepatitis C patients, and a good portion of that was for a prescription medication that cures the liver-wasting disease. State taxpayers are on pace to make that price tag look like a deal this year, spending $17 million in the first quarter alone to treat just 301 patients. When a 12-week course of the drug Harvoni, made by California drugmaker Gilead Sciences, costs $93,000, it’s easy to see how the bill gets that high that quickly. What...

  • Wilson: Coffee messages rarely make sense

    Kevin Wilson

I will never understand some things about coffee. I don’t get how people will want to throw elected officials out of office when gasoline hits $3 a gallon, but think nothing of letting the engine idle while buying a $4 latte. I don’t get how people think they save instantly using K-Cups when they just paid $100 for the machine that brews them. My most recent confusion? How people think buying coffee sends a clear message. Enter Operation #Trumpcup. A prominent Twitter use...

  • Terry: Newspaper change makes good business sense

  • Sloan: Trump off to bad start with picks

Unlike Obama haters, I want Trump to succeed in making our country better for everyone. To paraphrase Obama, the office transforms ideology into sobering reality. Russia is attacking us with cyber warfare. Immigrant workers keep prices low. All those “worst deals in history” — NATO, Obamacare, nuclear and trade agreements — required complex negotiations. In the real world, “America First” requires compromises with countries who want to put their country first. Wendel Sloa...

  • Boswell: Pastor Jim made our world better

    Alisa Boswell

Dozens of memories flooded my mind over this past week as I grieved — along with many others — the loss of an amazing man who touched many lives across eastern New Mexico and beyond. I was about 8 when my parents began taking us to a non-denominational church called Living Stones Community Fellowship, which was pastored by Jim Kelly. I was shy and quiet that first Sunday. By the third Sunday, I was wrapping my little arms around Jim’s big frame for a hug every time I saw h...

  • Stevens: The News heads for the future

They’re married. The Clovis News Journal, 87, and Portales News-Tribune, 59, made it official this morning. They’ve been getting along for years anyway, sharing staff, sharing stories, sharing the comics pages. The websites are one now, and so are the Facebook pages. And in a show of mutual respect, they’ve both changed their names to The Eastern New Mexico News. Publisher Rob Langrell summarized the union in making the announcement last week: David Stevens “While the name of...

  • ENMU's Rotich finishes sixth in Division II

STAFF REPORT ST. LEO, Fla. — Eastern New Mexico University junior Mercy Rotich didn’t know what to expect in Saturday’s NCAA Division II women’s national cross country competition.
