[email protected] Melrose has been the only team to give Logan any trouble this season, but coach Dickie Roybal says the Buffaloes will have to be much-improved if they want to beat the Longhorns in today’s 2 p.m. 8-man state football championship game at Melrose. That’s the only blemish on the record for the Buffaloes (9-1), who’ve dominated most opponents in their own right. Meantime, the Longhorns (11-0) haven’t had a game closer than 25 points other than their come-from-behind, 47-38 home win over the Buffs on Sept. 1...
[email protected] LAS CRUCES — The Field of Dreams became a first-half nightmare for the Clovis Wildcats, and a second-half comeback wasn’t enough to halt second-seeded Mayfield. The Trojans scored on five of their first six possessions behind a complete game from quarterback Kavika Johnson en route to a 35-21 victory in a Class 6A semifinal Friday night. Mayfield (10-1), winners of six straight, will take on third-seeded La Ceuva, a 28-14 winner over Onate. Clovis finished 6-6 for the fourth consecutive season, and had...

Police deserve benefit of doubt Day after day I read or hear on the news about our law enforcement officers and how out of hand and unjust they have become. I have one question: When you need help who do you call? Do you dial 1-800-a-thug or law enforcement? Our boys in blue or any color deserve the benefit of the doubt. They have a dangerous job and when you give them respect, you usually get respect in return. If the teenager in Ferguson, Missouri, had treated the officer with respect and complied, he would be alive today....
On this date ... 1970: Burt Ward, who played Robin on the “Batman” television show, was a day away from visiting Clovis. He would tell fans that he grew up in “the slums of Beverly Hills,” and that he was married and had a 4-year-old daughter. He said he sometimes encountered tough guys who wanted to test the Boy Wonder’s true fighting ability, which was the reason he often traveled with body guards. He also said he was hospitalized several times after attempting stunts for the TV show, said the show’s Batmobile was a $120,...
Staff writer Winter weather for me means sweaters and a lot of coffee, but for my father and my uncle’s cattle ranch it means more work. The last snow was less than an inch, which did not worry my father as our horses and cattle could still reach the grass below the snow. However, the more snow our ranch gets, the harder it is for our cattle to get food. Albuquerque Meteorologist Jason Frazier says the winter weather outlook is that New Mexico could see above-normal precipitation. Ranchers and farmers in Quay, Curry and R...
Staff report Violent crimes reported to law enforcement have steadily decreased in Clovis over the last five years, according to numbers released Nov. 10 by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The report shows Clovis had 277 violent crimes in 2009. That number dropped to 269 last year, despite a population increase of more than 7,000 since 2009. The city saw just 209 violent crimes reported in 2011. Violent crimes are classified in the report as murder and non-negligent manslaughter, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault,...
Staff writer [email protected] The federal Affordable Care Act’s first-year enrollment figures for New Mexico show the Medicaid supplement plans have proven more popular than the state’s health care insurance exchange. In Quay, Curry and Roosevelt counties, the Medicaid expansion program, Centennial Care, has signed up about 5,000 users; the New Mexico Health Insurance Exchange (NMHIX) has fewer than 1,000, according to Larry Leaming, CEO of the Roosevelt General Hospital in Portales. In Roosevelt County, he said, 1,3...
Staff writer [email protected] Benny Barrow was always a man to dish it out, whether it be a joke, advice, political leanings or a plate of the barbecue that always kept Clovis coming back for more. The owner of the former Ben’s Barbecue died Oct. 13 following a battle with Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Born Aug. 1, 1941, in Clovis, Barrow had the typical Clovis upbringing, meeting his future wife while dragging Main Street. He was there to meet a girl, and Vicki Moss was there to meet a guy. They clearly found what they were loo...
