  • Water board members talk resolution options

    Alisa Boswell|Updated Nov 23, 2016

PORTALES — Board members of the Eastern New Mexico Water Utility Authority came together to discuss their options Tuesday after Portales city councilors refused to approve a resolution last week. ENMWUA Executive Director Justin Howalt said every other authority member community — Curry County, town of Melrose, city of Clovis, town of Elida, town of Grady and town of Texico — had already passed the resolution. The resolution states that if something were to happen to ENMWUA to cause it to not be able to pay existing and f...

  • Cats begin march toward respectability

    Dave Wagner|Updated Nov 23, 2016

Scott Robinson knew the sledding could be a bit tough for a while when he assumed Clovis High boys basketball coaching duties two years ago. That said, it’s been a really rough ride for the Wildcats, who are 8-44 in those two seasons, including 3-22 last year. Still, Robinson thinks the Cats are starting to head in the right direction, and have an ultimate goal at some point of winning a district title and competition for a Class 6A state championship. On paper, they couldn’t have a much tougher draw in their bid to turn thi...

  • We couldn't have seen this coming

    Rube Render|Updated Nov 23, 2016

Elections have consequences and some of them are unforeseen. In what NBC news described as a "maneuver that seemed to deliberately limit access to the media" the Trump family went to dinner. The president-elect had the impertinence to decide he was hungry after his spokeswoman told the press pool that his day had ended. One week after the election, the Trump administration was described by NBC as, "shaping up to be the least accessible to the public and the press in modern...

  • MVD at fault for Real ID confusion

    Updated Nov 23, 2016

Here’s a guess that the folks who run the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division are not Black Friday shoppers. They are the folks who scramble on Christmas Eve to find the gifts they need. That procrastination on the part of MVD is the reason far too many New Mexicans are going into the holidays scrambling to comply with the new Real-ID license and ID law. Real ID was passed by Congress in 2005 after 18 of 19 terrorists used state-issued driver’s licenses to board planes and then crash them into the World Trade Center tow...

  • Opinions must change to fit facts

    Kent McManigal|Updated Nov 23, 2016

How often do you change your opinion about anything? When you do, what causes the change? With the reluctance toward changing an opinion, it's amazing anyone ever does, on anything. Yet, it is possible, and it does happen. I have changed my opinion on many things over the course of my life. When I change my opinions, I would like for truth, reality, and reason to be the catalyst. When I'm wrong, I want to know, and I want this knowledge to change me. I am suspicious when...

    Eamon Scarbrough|Updated Nov 23, 2016

PORTALES — The trial date for a former Portales man accused of child molestation has been moved to January after a hearing Tuesday in Portales district court. Rocky Banda, 35, is charged with multiple counts of sexual penetration of a minor, having allegedly molested a teenage girl over the course of several years. After finding that a motion for a more definitive statement on the timeline in which the alleged crimes took place had been answered by the state, Ninth Judicial District Judge Donna Mowrer rescheduled Banda’s tri...

  • Opinion: Big thanks to Cannon volunteers

Local columnist On this day of giving thanks, I am especially grateful today to some neighbors all of us in eastern New Mexico happen to share: the men and women stationed at Cannon Air Force Base. I am not exaggerating when I say that the used book sale conducted last week by the Friends of the Portales Public Library could not have happened without our Cannon volunteers. This is the third year that our small but loyal group of library supporters was supplemented (by which I mean “saved”) by some book-toting men and wom...
