The Staff of The News|Updated Nov 27, 2019

A Curry County woman was discovered dead Tuesday after a house fire was reported north of Clovis. Leota Porter, 89, the home's owner, was unable to escape the fire and died at the scene, according to a Curry County Sheriff's Department news release. According to the release: • At 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Curry County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the home at 2564 Curry Road H. • A care-taker, Marshall Call, discovered and reported the fire. • Life is better now that I have a younger brother

    Natalie Williams|Updated Nov 26, 2019

When my brother Charlie first arrived, I was so happy. I had wanted a sibling all my life and my wish finally came true. Me and my baby brother have a 10-year age gap. Since I was older I could help my mom with him when he was born, and I could carry him. If I was only five years older, my mom probably would not have let me hold him by myself. Before Charlie, I hated being an only child. If you have a lot of siblings, you probably have said that you would love to be an only child. But you should think twice. As an only...

  • Sharing ideas can make them seem more real

    Carrie Classon|Updated Nov 26, 2019

I lost a feather the other day and I understand this does not qualify as news. But I want to say — for the record — that this was a really nice feather. I paid good money for it and pinned it to my favorite blue hat. I wore that hat out for a walk, one evening, when it was chilly. This was the last night that my husband, Peter, and I were in Frigiliana, a little town in the south of Spain. I walked to the top of the steep hill where, 400 years ago, a Moorish castle stood, guarding the town from invaders. The invaders eve...

  • Good day to remember Clovis' namesake

    David Stevens - Staff|Updated Nov 26, 2019

We’re pretty sure the city of Clovis was named for a Frankish king named Clovis. There is no known documentation to prove this theory, but there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence. An Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe document in 1906 provided a proposed name for the west-bound railroad station closest to Texico. That name was Clovis, described as “an old French name.” In April 1907, railroad officials filed a Clovis townsite plat near the location of the station. Media first tied the name to the Frankish King Clovis. In 1909, T...

  • Good luck being your charming self tomorrow

    Betty Williamson|Updated Nov 26, 2019

For a mere 50 cents, I picked up a gem at a recent used book sale — “The Woman You Want to Be: Margery Wilson’s Complete Book of Charm.” First published in 1928, mine is from the 18th printing, released in 1942. It’s filled with timeless tips — timeless, I tell you — on how be a better person … OK, a better woman … but you men should listen up, too. If you’re hosting the meal at your house tomorrow, it’s possibly too late to incorporate Wilson’s advice for this year, but come...

  • God has populated lives with wonderfully interesting people

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Nov 26, 2019

In an old issue of Leadership Journal, Chris T. Zwingelberg made this observation: While everyone is familiar with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes and his amazingly keen powers of observation, few of us are aware of Holmes’ belief that deduction and observation are even more necessary in faith and religion than they are in detective work. In Doyle’s “The Adventure of the Naval Treaty,” Doyle pictures his famous sleuth studying a simple rose. Holmes’ famous side...

the Staff of The News|Updated Nov 26, 2019

CLOVIS — A family dairy battling contaminated groundwater adjacent to Cannon Air Force Base has filed a complaint against the United States, the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. Air Force. Art and Renee Schaap, doing business as Highland Dairy of Clovis, filed the claim Thursday in U.S. District Court in South Carolina. The court is also handling various suits regarding perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). Highland claims negligence, nuisance, trespass and failure to warn by the d...
