  • Our time better spent on things that count toward heaven

    Judy Brandon

While Mother and Daddy were in seminary, the family budget was tight. So frugality was a word we lived by. Early on I became familiar with thrift shops and the exciting bargain basement at the Kansas City Macy’s Department Store. One time Mother bought an old sofa at a thrift store. The couch looked terrible but had possibilities. It needed new fabric. The money wasn’t there to have it professionally upholstered so that’s when Mother enrolled in the upholstery class that was f...

  • Police say robberies may be connected

    CNJ Staff

Two recent armed robberies at Seventh Street convenience stores may be connected, according to the Clovis Police Department. Police have made no arrests and have no suspects in the crimes that occurred four blocks apart in the evening hours of Feb. 15 and Tuesday, said Clovis Police Lt. James Schoeffel. The two robberies share “striking similarities,” Schoeffel said. The suspect in both cases attempted to purchase gum, and then pointed a hand gun wrapped in a blue handkerchief or bandanna at the clerks and demanded cash, pol...

  • Former deputy’s sentencing delayed

    Tony Parra

Sentencing for a former Roosevelt County Sheriff’s deputy convicted of criminal sexual penetration has been delayed at least 60 days while the defendant undergoes a diagnostic evaluation. Ninth Judicial District Judge Ted Hartley agreed to the evaluation for former Deputy Gary Adkins during court proceedings Thursday at the Roosevelt County Courthouse. Adkins, 46, faces a maximum of seven years in prison under a plea agreement. The minimum punishment would be probation, officials said. District Attorney Matt Chandler said A... Full story

  • Outdoor incidents not at all uncommon

It’s been almost two weeks since the news broke that Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot his hunting buddy, Harry Whittington, while they were traipsing through the brush and mesquite of south Texas looking for quail. Stuff can happen when you go into the great outdoors. I think most folks around the High Plains and rural America understand this. The event reminds me of famous outdoor incidents I have known, like that fishing accident when I was in the ninth grade. Me and my pals John and Mike were pursuing trout a... Full story

  • Playing hooky takes care, planning

    Helena Rodriguez

When it comes to playing hooky from work or school, the names of pros come to mind: Laverne & Shirley and Farris Bueller. Granted these are fictional characters who went through more trouble than it was worth to treat themselves to a day off. I think we can all get away with playing hooky once in a great big while. I started thinking about the art of playing hooky the other day after reading an article on MSN.com titled “15 Excuses for Calling in Sick.” While I don’t encourage playing hooky often, as in more than once a yea...

  • Port deal should be scrutinized, not dismissed

    Freedom Newspapers

At first glance it looks just like what South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham called it: an “unbelievably tone-deaf politically” decision. The Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S., a government interagency panel, signs off on allowing a company owned by the government of Dubai, second-largest of the seven United Arab Emirates, to buy the company that handles operations at six U.S. ports? In this post-9/11 era, do we want an Arab-owned company running port terminals in New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Bal...

  • Music helps set everyday mood

Music is a huge part of my life. Every single day I listen to music or sing. I am in Ambassador Choir and so I listen to and sing those songs quite often. Life is better with music. It just would not be exciting without it. In my free time I watch TV, a movie, or play on the computer. Music is everywhere. On TV there is a theme song for the show or maybe a scene that is scary. It would not be as scary without music. On a movie, there are many different scenes with music. Music indicates that certain parts of the movie are sup...

  • Music influence throughout life

This is part of a week-long series in celebration of “Music in Our Schools Week” at Clovis Municipal Schools. Music has influenced my whole life through decisions I make and what friends I have. I was born and raised in Clovis. When I attended Barry Elementary School, I was always trying to get involved in something that involved music. I really don’t know what inspired me to get into music. I believe it was just the enjoyment of making something happen with other people. Neither my parents nor my grandparents are music...

  • Eminent domain issue tabled

    CNJ Staff

The Clovis City Commission on Thursday tabled a vote to purchase land from a private landowner that would have allowed the city to build a drainage ditch. Commissioners will wait 90 days before they decide whether to purchase 1.13 acres of Griego’s property and replace a fence for $22,750, under the law of eminent domain. “I don’t want a ditch on my property,” Griego told commissioners. Under state law, the city can take the land at fair market price in the name of public good. Griego will contract an independent apprais... Full story

  • Health officials: Hospital complaint confirmed

    CNJ Staff

New Mexico Department of Health officials did substantiate an allegation against Plains Regional Medical Center during a February inspection of the hospital. But federal regulations bind them from releasing their findings to the public expeditiously, according to David Rodriguez, chief of the Health, Facility, Licensing, and Certification Bureau. Rodriguez said “the public doesn’t fit into” the process of citation until after the hospital has been given a chance to respond to and fix any allegations. That day is months away....

  • Texico falls to Tucumcari on last-second miss

    Kevin Wilson

TUCUMCARI — The Tucumcari Rattlers led for only 3:05 of Thursday night’s District 6-2A playoff game against Texico. But it was the 2:35 stretch at the end that counted most for the Rattlers, and a basket that didn’t count when the Wolverines needed it. Drew White scored a team-high 12 points, and the host Rattlers escaped with a 37-36 victory to qualify for Saturday’s district championship at Santa Rosa and next week’s regionals. Daniel Scheuler had a game-high 15 points for Texico (15-13), but his final shot on a transitio...

  • Clovis wins baseball opener

    Eric Butler

Clovis High School senior Daniel Casarez releases a pitch in the third inning of Thursday's game against Santa Fe at Bell Park. (Staff photo: Eric Kluth) At the beginning of its season opening game, it seemed as if nothing could go right for the Clovis Wildcats baseball team. Santa Fe, the first round opposition for the ‘Cats, took advantage of a pitcher struggling with his control and jumped out to a 4-0 lead through two innings at Bell Park. But, in the end, everything went right for the host Wildcats in the bottom of t...

  • Fitness center calms down for final game of day

Airman Thomas Trower Tuesday night was a rowdy night for the Cannon Fitness Center. The first two intramural basketball games ran into overtime and the third game sent someone to the hospital. Luckily for the sanity of the officials, the final game of the night was relatively calm. The two bottom teams in the National Division, CS and CES came to try and stay out of the loser slot. The game was relatively slow and constant, with CES taking a 29-20 lead at halftime and keeping a steady rhythm. CS tried to hold them back, but r...
