PORTALES — A man shot by Roosevelt County Sheriff Malin Parker in January 2018 is suing, alleging Parker used excessive force in trying to stop him as he drove a front-loading tractor. James McFarlin filed the lawsuit last week. Authorities said Parker shot McFarlin after McFarlin rammed the tractor into his wife's car and drove recklessly. McFarlin, 48, at the time, was charged with unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, aggravated fleeing a law enforcement officer and criminal damage to property after leading officers on a t...

  • Wildcats optimistic but cautious

    Peter Stein - Staff Writer|Updated Dec 3, 2019

CLOVIS — As he sat in his office at Rock Staubus Gymnasium Monday afternoon, Clovis boys basketball coach Jaden Isler peered into the near future and saw a team with great potential. Understandable. Last winter Isler’s Wildcats posted a 20-win season that included a District 4-5A championship and a berth in the state tournament. And that team lost just four players to graduation. Now with eight seniors returning, plus two juniors who logged quality varsity playing time las...

  • Hounds hope to end on high note

    Peter Stein - Staff Writer|Updated Dec 3, 2019

PORTALES — As late afternoon became twilight and twilight became night at Greyhound Stadium on Monday, the Eastern New Mexico football team was still working. And that was just fine with every Greyhound player, every Greyhound coach. It was early December, and ENMU still had a game to prepare for, still had a reason to practice. The Hounds last month were invited to the Heritage Bowl in Corsicana, Texas, which will kick off this Saturday at noon Central Standard Time and p...

  • Win would be worth two grand

    Peter Stein - Staff Writer|Updated Dec 3, 2019

PORTALES — Paul Terry’s success is the Eastern New Mexico football team’s success. And vice versa. This Saturday, when the senior fullback and his teammates play the Heritage Bowl against Southern Arkansas in Corsicana, Texas, their main priority is to get a bowl victory, which would be Eastern’s first Division II postseason win ever. But, Terry is chasing 2,000 rushing yards, standing just 222 short of it. That’s a number certainly within his wheelhouse, because he tore off...

  • Still young, but one year wiser

    Dave Wagner - Staff Writer|Updated Dec 3, 2019

PORTALES — Portales High’s girls return all but two players from last year’s team. Despite that, the Lady Rams remain young as they head into a season-opening tournament this weekend hosted by Santa Fe High. PHS has just one senior to go with nine sophomores and three juniors on its opening roster. The Lady Rams face Espanola Valley at 2 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Santa Fe meet. Despite the team’s relative youth, seventh-year coach Wade Fraze said the Lady Ra...

  • Rams hit hardwood running

    Dave Wagner - Staff Writer|Updated Dec 3, 2019

PORTALES — Suffice it to say, it’s a quick turnaround for the football-playing members of Portales High’s boys basketball squad. After pounding top-seeded Bloomfield 23-0 in Saturday’s Class 4A state championship football game, the Rams were slated to begin their basketball campaign on Tuesday night at home against Dexter with only one practice for the full roster. No problem, really, said Rams senior Kellan Hightower on Monday. “It’s going to be a little tough, conditionin...

  • Weekend wrap: Greyhounds fall to Regis

The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 3, 2019

DENVER — Eastern New Mexico University’s men were close enough to their first win of the season on Saturday night, they could almost taste it. Unfortunately for the Greyhounds, Regis went on a game-ending 18-6 run fueled by a trio of 3-pointers, and the Rangers claimed an 84-70 victory. Regis took the lead at 66-64 on a 3-point basket by senior Taffy Tela with 5:36 to go, and followed that up with treys from junior Tomas Auruskevicius and Tela to begin to pull away. Four players scored in double figures for the Rangers (5-...

  • Eagles claim wins in debut

CLOVIS — If nothing else, Clovis Christian’s basketball teams are off to a good start as they head into a grueling two-week stretch to begin the season. The Eagles and Lady Eagles posted comfortable wins on Monday night at the CCS gym, the boys beating Portales ‘C’ 52-29 while the girls notched a 43-29 victory over the Lady Rams. CCS broke open the boys matchup by outscoring Portales ‘C’ 15-0 in the second quarter for a 21-point lead.
