  • Grand jury to consider homicide charges

David Stevens, The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 3, 2024

A Clovis grand jury on Friday will be asked to decide if three juveniles accused of murder should stand trial as adults. A fourth juvenile charged with murder in the Nov. 14 slaying of Marcos Ramirez, 26, may also face adult sanctions, but he remains under medical care and in the custody of his guardians, Assistant District Attorney Jake Boazman said. “We had 10 days to file notice of attempt to seek adult sanctions … now we have 10 more days to get in front of a grand jury,” Boazman said. “Because it’s a first-deg...

  • Legislator proposes Game Commission overhaul

The Santa Fe New Mexican, Syndicated content|Updated Dec 3, 2024

An angler, a biologist and a farmer walk into a commission meeting. It might sound like the start to a bad joke. But that could be the makeup of a future New Mexico Game Commission, as some legislators and nonprofits push for changes to the seven-member committee. A draft of a bill that would create specific "job descriptions" for commissioners, as well as raising hunting and fishing fees for the first time in decades, was presented last month at a meeting of the Water and Natural Resources Committee. Under the proposal,...

  • Oil and gas industry still booming in NM

    Albuquerque Journal, Syndicated content|Updated Dec 3, 2024

New Mexico's oil and gas industry is holding strong. It's difficult to predict the booms and busts of the oil and gas industry, but academic expert Jim Peach points to rig counts as a measure to judge how the industry is doing. If the number of drilling rigs falls below 100 in New Mexico, that could indicate a bust on the horizon, he said. New Mexico's rig count stood at 102 as of Nov. 22, the same as the week prior, according to energy company Baker Hughes. That's four fewer rigs than the year before. Nonetheless, New...

  • Rams hold on down stretch, top Los Alamos

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 3, 2024

Style points were probably a bit in short supply on Monday night. No matter. Portales High's boys escaped, holding on late to edge Los Alamos 49-45 in their season opener at the Ram Athletic Center. Leading 21-17 at halftime, the Rams built a 12-point lead with an 18-10 surge in the third stanza. Meantime, the visiting Hilltoppers (0-2) returned the favor with the same advantage in the final frame, pulling within a point with just over a minute left. "We were fighting to...

  • Hounds roll past Justice College

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 3, 2024

For just a brief time, it looked like Justice College might be able to hang with Eastern New Mexico University's men on Saturday. That notion ended quickly, though, and the Greyhounds rolled to an 88-45 victory over the Chandler, Ariz.-based Lions at Steve Loy Arena. Junior guards Treyvon Byrd and Isaiah Randolph finished with 20 and 14 points, respectively, while junior guard Cooper Jackson posted 12 points and seven steals. All told, 11 of the 12 Hounds who saw action...

  • ENMU women notch 91-38 triumph over Panhandle

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 3, 2024

Julieta Ceja has waited a long time to get back on the basketball coach. The Eastern New Mexico University sophomore from Jiquilpan, Mexico, has wasted little time making her presence felt. After sitting out all of the 2023-24 campaign due to an ACL injury suffered in warmups during the season finale the previous year, Ceja has started all seven games for the Greyhounds and on Saturday recorded her first double-double (12 points, 12 rebounds) in a 91-38 blowout of Oklahoma Panhandle State at Steve Loy Arena. Ceja was one of f...

  • Wolverines cruise to win over Lions in 2A title tilt

the Staff of The News|Updated Dec 3, 2024

SANTA ROSA – It seems all the Texico Wolverines have had to do is reach the Class 2A state football championship game, and they cruise from there. A year after thumping Eunice – a team it had lost to earlier in the season – 44-7 in the finals, the Wolverines did the same against Santa Rosa on Saturday, posting a 50-0 win over the Lions in a game which ended on the 50-point mercy rule about a minute into the final quarter. Senior running back Alex Fuentes amassed 257 yards rush...

  • Lady Cats pull off OT victory over Valencia

the Staff of The News|Updated Dec 3, 2024

LOS LUNAS – Jeff Reed called it an “ugly” game. Still, winning ugly is better than the alternative. Clovis High’s girls shot 19-for-22 from the free throw line, including 6-of-6 in overtime, and rallied for a season-opening 62-58 victory over Valencia on Saturday afternoon. Senior guard Amanda De La Rosa scored a personal-best 19 points, including 4-of-9 from 3-point range and 5-of-5 from the foul line, while sophomore guard Gianna Cordova added 18 with 3-of-4 from distance, including a 3 to tie the game 54-54 with 21 seco...

  • Opinion: Trump always showed who he is

    Elwood Watson, Syndicated content|Updated Dec 3, 2024

Donald Trump kept telling us he’d be a threat to democracy if re-elected president. Now he’s showing us. Several months ago on his Truth Social website, Trump threatened to “expel” and “cast out” government workers who oppose his radical views, describing them as a “sick political class” that hates the country. The 2024 election, he wrote, “is our final battle.” He is wasting no time acting on his promise. Trump, who has endured his own accusations of sexual harassment and ele...

  • Opinion: Christmas classic would see some changes in 2024

    Danny Tyree, Syndicated content|Updated Dec 3, 2024

As a Baby Boomer, I looked on with bemusement; but Dec. 10, 1974 was a cultural milestone for the oldest members of Generation X. That’s when ABC premiered the Rankin/Bass Productions animated Christmas special “The Year Without A Santa Claus” (a.k.a. “Scary Title, Kids, But Tell Mom and Dad That Hasbro and Mattel Are Still Here for You Even in a Worst-Case Scenario”). Showcasing the voice talent of Shirley Booth and Mickey Rooney (“Hey, kids, let’s put on a show – one without that nerve-wracking ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas...

  • Mostly remember dress code violations from school

Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 3, 2024

I was working at a place a few years ago when, one day, the manager was yelling, sending someone home to change clothes. “You are dressed totally inappropriately. Go home now and change clothes,” Mr. Manager commanded to the female staff member. I hadn’t heard or seen someone getting sent home like that since junior high school. Yeah, junior high. I don’t know when or why this “middle school” stuff started. I come from a time when kids got sent home for skirts that were too short or hair that was too long. Such things were...

  • Opinion: Christmas songs, stories remind of better things

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated Dec 3, 2024

Christmas brings out the best and worst of our way of life. Crass consumerism runs rampant this time of year, as if owning things equates to happiness. If that’s the case, why are there so many miserable rich people? Sure, it’s the season of giving, but it’s also a season for getting. People buy things for their loved ones, and then a little extra for that special something for themselves. You know you do. I do too. Christmas used to be a religious holiday, but if that’s still the case for you, it’s because you’re go...

  • Faith: Unlike Thanksgiving turkey, gratitude never goes bad

    Curtis Shelburne, Local columnist|Updated Dec 3, 2024

As I’m writing on the Sunday evening after Thanksgiving, most of us still have a bit of turkey left. No wonder a giblet or two of the news earlier today focused on a warning. Great Thanksgiving memories are worth holding on to, but the U.S. Department of Agriculture cautions that leftover meals shouldn’t be kept too long. At our house today, we still have a bit of turkey left, but we’re well past the “My, what a wonderful bird!” stage and have moved into the “Let’s slap a hunk...

According to a Sonic news release, the Clovis teachers were four of 175 teachers nationwide who received scholarships in November to attend the Ron Clark Academy Experience, “a world-class, two-day educator training that occurred in Atlanta” in early November.
