TEXICO — If there was a word to describe Tuesday night's Texico High girls basketball game, it would be "energy." The Lady Wolverines roared out with it, used it to build a quick daunting lead, played with it for all four quarters, and rolled with it to a 55-13 victory over Gateway Christian at Texico High School. As a result, Texico is back on the fun side of .500, improving to 3-2. "We've been talking about that, about how important it is to start games and start halves w...
TEXICO — Good teams find ways to win. Texico High's boys basketball team did just that, adjusting on defense and rallying for a 65-52 home victory over Gateway Christian Tuesday night. The Wolves, as a result, improved to 4-0 on the season. Texico's Dalton Thatcher led all scorers with 27 points, including six treys and a 9-of-10 performance from the free-throw line. Joe Waide burned Texico for four threes and 14 points in the first half, but the Wolverines held him to just t...
LOVINGTON — Clovis’ girls basketball team played great defense, holding Lovington to single digits in each of the first three quarters, and came away from Tuesday night’s road game with a 46-26 blowout victory. The Lady Wildcats, as a result, evened their record at 2-2. Clovis held Lovington to 4, 4 and 6 points, respectively, across those first three periods, while playing enough offense to take a comfortable lead. But not as much offense as head coach Jeff Reed would’ve liked. “You know the sad thing is, I think we could...
PORTALES — Basketball legend Allen Iverson once mocked a reporter’s question about practice by saying, “We talkin’ about practice, man. Not a game, practice.” For the Portales High boys basketball team, however, practice made perfect in the Rams’ 79-36 win over Dexter on Tuesday night, the first time they’ve tasted victory this season. Portales (1-2) had struggled in its first two games of the season, in blowout losses to Roswell and Texico. However, Monday’s practice proved to be a breakthrough for the Rams, who outscored t...
The latest Trump or former Trump associate to be indicted by independent prosecutor Robert Mueller is retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn. Depending on which news organization you choose to follow, Flynn’s guilty plea for lying to the FBI is either a bombshell or a nothing-burger. Never Trumpers in both parties and the media seem to believe that Flynn’s plea will be the beginning of the end of the Donald J. Trump presidency. In point of fact, Flynn lied about conversations he had w...
Legislative Democrats are champing at the bit to raise revenue, and one way to do it is to remove exemptions to the state’s dysfunctional and burdensome gross receipts tax system. Meanwhile, Republican Gov. Susana Martinez campaigned on a pledge of no tax increases and isn’t about to go back on her word to New Mexicans. But she would agree to remove some of those same exemptions if it is done in the context of a tax reform legislation. Rep. Jason Harper, R-Rio Rancho, is willing to once again pour his heart, soul and exp...
Most people enjoy helping others when they can, and when they see a deserving opportunity. It’s one of the best things about human nature. Yet it’s easy to fool yourself into believing you are helping while doing the opposite. It’s not “helping” if it’s unwanted. For example, I don’t want you to hire police to protect me from crime. I certainly don’t want to be forced to pay for them, nor let them interfere in acts that have no individual victim. If I see you stabbing yourse...
