  • Businesses prepping for all the season brings

    Kurt Munz-Raper|Updated Dec 10, 2016

Businesses are prepping for the season. Stores in Clovis and Portales, from hardware to novelty to consignment, are getting ready for customers as they prepare for the winter weather. “We’ve got our shovels ready; we hope we don’t have another Goliath,” said Tankersley’s Owner Paul Tankersley, in reference to last December’s winter storm that essentially shut down eastern New Mexico for three days and rung up more than $150,000 in taxpayer costs. Tankersley said he had two customers on Monday shopping for warm clothes to...

Brett Shumate said his father told him the story: "Everybody was called to their stations. He jumped up and went to work. He was still in his underwear for about two days because he never had time to put his clothes on. "They were able to fire up and steam out and they survived the initial attack. He said he really didn't see much because he was below deck the whole...

  • After 50 years, still no arena like the Pit

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated Dec 8, 2016

When it comes to hoops in New Mexico, there is but one destination — the Pit. The nationally renowned arena, originally named University Arena but affectionately called the Pit for its underground design, is the University of New Mexico Lobos hunting ground, where visiting teams fear to tread thanks to an amazing fan base that makes it one of the loudest, most raucous places to play college basketball. High school teams also strive to play in the Pit for state basketball championship games. Over the years, the Pit has p...

  • Ignoring reality has consequences

    Kent McManigal|Updated Dec 8, 2016

When you ignore the rules of reality, you get hurt. Notice I don’t say when you break reality’s rules, because those rules can’t be broken. They can only be accepted or ignored. Ignore them at your peril. Take gravity, for example. If you ignore gravity you will suffer, and you may even fall to your death. Once you accept the reality of gravity, you can use the rules governing it to fly or even to experience “weightlessness” in orbit. Neither is a case of defying gravity, but...

  • Maybe popular vote should win

    Rube Render|Updated Dec 8, 2016

Much is being made of the fact that Hillary Clinton won the popular vote while Donald Trump “only” won the electoral vote. What major media refers to as demonstrators or protesters are in fact rioters who remain angry that they are unable to change the results of the election. Many are carrying signs with Trump’s likeness proclaiming, “Not My President.” One budding comedian on the internet posted a likeness of Hillary Clinton with the notation, “Not Anybody’s President.” N...
