The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 8, 2021

Buckle up, eastern New Mexico. Big winds are headed this way. The National Weather Service is reporting “Strong to potentially damaging wind gusts of 55 to 70 mph will arrive Thursday night and become widespread across the central mountain chain and eastern plains Friday as colder air surges into the state. “Dangerous crosswinds with reduced visibilities in areas of blowing dust over the eastern plains may make travel hazardous, especially Friday afternoon.” The system is expected to drop 6-12 inches of snow in the Jemez... Full story

  • Area avoids major wind damage

    Steve Hansen - Staff Writer|Updated Dec 7, 2021

Except for tumbleweeds amassing on rural roads in Curry and Roosevelt counties, high winds Sunday night did little damage in either county. In Clovis, a lightpole over a softball field at Hillcrest Park collapsed in winds that the U.S. Weather Service reported as reaching as high as 43 mph, with gusts up to 52 mph, but city officials reported little other damage to city properties. In Portales, city officials said the wind may have knocked out some light bulbs at the city...

  • ENMU rallies for win

    Dave Wagner - Staff Writer|Updated Dec 7, 2021

CLOVIS - To University of the Southwest, it was an exhibition game. To Eastern New Mexico University's men, it was a chance to get back to the .500 mark. It took a while, but the Greyhounds finally wore down the depth-thin Mustangs in the second half and claimed a hard-fought 77-70 victory over USW on Saturday afternoon at Rock Staubus Gym. Four players reached double figures for the Greyhounds (4-4), including freshman guard Sebastian Jimenez, who delivered all 10 of his...

  • Former Wildcats make mark on college gridiron

The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 7, 2021

Even though the Clovis High football season ended more than a month ago, it was quite a weekend for Wildcat alumni as one claimed a bowl game MVP award and another will head to a national title game. In Arkansas, 2016 Clovis grad Daulton Hatley earned MVP honors as Southeastern Oklahoma State University defeated Emporia State 37-34 in the Farmers Bank and Trust United Bowl. A little closer to Clovis, sophomore Malik Phillips and the New Mexico Military Institute Broncos punched their ticket to the NJCAA Division I title game...

  • Williamson: Silver Bells making wishes come true

    Betty Williamson|Updated Dec 7, 2021

Most of us picture Santa Claus as a jolly old fellow, complete with a red suit, a white beard, and a sleigh pulled by reindeer. None of those words describe Kirsty Forrest of Clovis. Yet to the residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities in eastern New Mexico and west Texas - Clovis, Portales, Farwell, Friona, Muleshoe, and Logan, to be specific - Forrest is Santa Claus personified. Her project is called Silver Bells, a beautiful community effort to make...

  • Tatum boys upend Melrose

The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 7, 2021

MELROSE — Suffice it to say, the Melrose Buffaloes have set a pretty high standard in recent years. With their quarterfinal win over Floyd in Thursday’s season opener in the Buffs’ American Heritage Bank tournament quarterfinals, Melrose registered its 38th victory in 39 games. Now, though, the Buffs have a sub-.500 record to start this season, and a two-game losing streak after falling 38-36 to Tatum in Friday’s semifinals and 41-38 to Clayton in Saturday’s third-place contest. Prior to Saturday, Melrose’ last losing stre...

  • Hawks dominant in win over Wildcats

    Dave Wagner - Staff Writer|Updated Dec 7, 2021

CLOVIS - The bad news is that Clovis High's boys essentially had no chance against Volcano Vista on Saturday night at The Rock. The good news? The Wildcats may not see many teams as deep and talented as the Hawks the rest of the way. Dominating from inside and outside, Volcano Vista roared to a 25-3 lead at the quarter and cruised to a 74-34 victory in the Cats' season opener. Senior guard Oscar McCoy had five of the Hawks' 12 3-point baskets and finished with a game-high 18...

  • McDonald: Price watchers won't lose hobby

    Tom McDonald|Updated Dec 7, 2021

Sound the alarm! Gas prices are going up! Throughout my life, I’ve noticed a certain obsession Americans have with gas prices. I used to tease my father for driving out of his way just to save a couple of cents on a gallon of gas. I told him that he probably spent more money (and time) driving across town to the cheaper gas station than he saved at the pump, but he was unwavering in his search for the cheapest gas possible. To this day, I know guys who can make an entire conversation out of the price of gasoline. The media d...

  • McManigal: Best to let people make own choices

    Kent McManigal|Updated Dec 7, 2021

I love people. I also know that humans are deeply flawed. This combination explains why I’m a libertarian. Every other position insists that no one is smart enough to run their own life while also believing most people are smart enough to run the lives of people they’ve never met. This running of strangers’ lives is carried out through voting and wielding political power. It’s not a realistic position. The libertarian position recognizes that most people are better at running...

  • Dig down and find commonalities that keep us all aligned

    Updated Dec 7, 2021

Eighty years ago, on Dec. 7, 1941, our parents and grandparents were shaken out of the humdrum of daily living — and the trajectory of their lives forever changed — by news that Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, home to America’s Pacific Fleet and considered a forward deterrent to Japanese attack, had itself come under murderous fire in a surprise Japanese assault. Other U.S. military installations on the island of Oahu and nearby were also hit that morning, about 8 a.m. Hawaii time, 1 p.m. at the White House, where President Frank...

  • Shelburne: All genuine light is God's light

    Updated Dec 7, 2021

It’s the light, you know! Twirling, swirling, splash-silvering crisp snow below. Liquid luminescence and stardust inadvertently shed By pirouetting angels in the sky above the Christ-child’s head. They fly, as has been said, by taking themselves lightly! Ah, the delight! Such glory and brightness! O’er that rude Baby King-sized bed. And look! Nestled warm in the hay below, As the Christmas angels sing, Silver-tipped tongues of light hailing the King, He lies slumbering — the Truth, the Light, the Way. Swaddled against...

  • Kleyn-Kennedy: Yucca carnival makes learning fun

    Updated Dec 7, 2021

Receiving a recent invitation to a Yucca Middle School academic event, I popped over on the appropriate day, just after the activity had started. I had been told that students were going to be working on a project-based learning activity. The lesson was PBL: Carnival Game Economics and Math, and this was the concluding portion of the lesson of Vicki Guiffre’s gifted and talented class. The idea had been for students to design a carnival-style skill game for a math and economics lesson. They designed a game in pairs or s...
