CLOVIS — Local children in need this holiday season are getting a helping hand from local law enforcement. The Clovis Police Department’s Cops and Kids Christmas Program is heading to the final stages, according to Lt. Daron Roach. The program raises money to give children in need a chance to shop with local law enforcement officers. “It’s been a project that the police department had for several years,” said Roach. “If you know of an underprivileged child, you come down to the police department, fill out an application...

PORTALES — An appeal has been filed in connection with a petty misdemeanor assault charge against Portales attorney Eric Dixon. Clovis attorney Michael Garrett filed the appeal Wednesday, following Dixon’s conviction in Portales Magistrate Court. Dixon was accused of screaming in a Portales man’s face in March 2015. William Slease of the state’s disciplinary board for attorneys said he couldn’t say whether the charges will impact Dixon’s license to practice law. Slease said the board goes through an extensive process to...

  • Parking rules don't apply at sale barn

    Audra Brown|Updated Dec 9, 2016

Parking lot etiquette is rarely spoken of other than to complain, but there do seem to be a few unspoken rules that most civilized people (unless they have an excuse) abide by when navigating the parking area. When lines are clearly painted on the ground, the assumption is that one is expected to park the automobile somewhere between the markings and not let the tail-end hang out too far behind. This is fine except for the fact that in many cases, one size does not fit all. If...

  • Jesus makes season wonderful

    Judy Brandon|Updated Dec 9, 2016

Many people designate the Christmas season as the greatest time of the year. Years ago, singer Andy Williams recorded a song about this season titled “ It’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year.” The lines of the song describe Christmas activities: jingling bells, Christmas parties, toasting marshmallows, caroling in the snow, mistletoe and hearts full of Christmas cheer. All those activities mentioned in the song are exhilarating, pleasurable and joyous. With all of these...

    David Norton|Updated Dec 9, 2016

PORTALES — The Eastern New Mexico men’s basketball team’s home opener didn’t end how the Hounds hoped, as a late rally wasn't enough to stop an 83-73 Texas A&M-Commerce win Thursday night. The Greyhounds (4-6, 0-3 LSC) struggled from the field all night, finishing the contest going 25-for-68 from the field and only 4-of-20 from beyond the 3-point arc. At the free throw line, the Hounds didn’t fare much better, shooting only 58 percent from the charity stripe. Head coach Tres Segler said, “We were a little frustrated...
