  • Cats hoping newcomers can step in

    Dave Wagner|Updated Mar 21, 2017

CLOVIS — With a senior-laden roster, Clovis High's baseball team had hopes of trying to do something at the state level last spring. That didn't pan out. While they were competitive, outscoring their opponents by 72 runs and losing by as much as four runs just once, the Wildcats fell short of a state berth. This year's squad will have a lot of new faces under third-year coach and 1997 CHS grad Richard Cruce. In addition, the Cats are now in District 2-6A, with four Albuquerque... Full story

  • Our People: Eat, sleep, breathe, dance

    Updated Feb 19, 2017

For as long as he can remember, Mytrice Deleon has wanted to dance. Deleon said he would sit through events as a kid and watch the cheerleaders and dancers do their thing and think, "I can do that." He was a military child growing up and moved around a lot. He tried out for the junior high pep squad in Goldsboro, North Carolina, and made the team, but it would be short lived. The family moved to Clovis, where there was no school dance team to join. In high school, there were t...

  • Q&A: Clovis city manager talks capital outlay, pipeline progress

    Updated Feb 19, 2017

Editor's note: Clovis City Manager Larry Fry discussed several topics as part of a periodic series checking up on issues related to the city. How is the reuse pipeline project progressing, and when does the city expect it to be finished? It depends upon the funding, in actuality. We are just now completing phase 1B, which is taking the water all the way to the corner of 14th and Sycamore, there on the edge of Hillcrest Park. Funding for 1C, which is the major distribution...

He has played basketball, football and participated in track all his life, he said, adding it is the political side that is really getting his career interests flowing as he plans to study international affairs at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. "From the political aspect I've always had an interest in politics and government, and I've always liked social studies and history in...

  • Exclusion miffs co-op

    Douglas Clark|Updated Feb 19, 2017

The Curry County Water Co-op wants a seat at the table on a new water committee. But the chair said it’s not built that way. A strategic planning committee, built out of the city’s Water Policy Advisory Committee, rankles Co-op Vice President Josefita Griego because it excludes the co-op and is closed to the public. “We just feel like we need their help and they need ours, but it feels like they don’t want our help,” Griego said. “We can all work for the betterment of Curry County and Clovis. We have a water crisis and...

  • Chili supper supports children's causes

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 19, 2017

PORTALES — While the dish served at the Portales Kiwanis Club’s 54th annual chili supper has become a staple in the community, the causes supported by the event are what public relations officer Anthony Schroeder values most. Schroeder said that proceeds from the event will be used to meet Kiwanis’ mission, “One child at a time,” by funding activities including swimming lessons, track meets, and even books and clothing for children. “We’re looking to try to help children improve their quality of life,” he said. The suppe...

  • Flynn fiasco shows better vetting in order

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated Feb 19, 2017

Just 24 days into his presidency, President Donald Trump’s embattled national security adviser was forced to resign — a glaring misstep by the fledgling administration. White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer says retired Army Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn didn’t leave because he had multiple contacts with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak prior to Trump’s Jan. 20 inauguration: He resigned because he had “misled” Vice President Mike Pence and other White House officials about those contacts, which contributed to an “evolving a...

  • Helping students is so rewarding

    Wendel Sloan|Updated Feb 19, 2017

I am lightly patting myself on the back as a road map for you getting heavily patted (not petted). A friend teaches kindergarten in a nearby lower socioeconomic school. Occasionally, I have donated inexpensive items — soccer, volleyball and basketballs (actually, the basketball was expensive but had a year of abuse from being slammed against floors and walls), school supplies (pencils, erasers and crayons are especially appreciated for lower grades), Velcro paddles and b...

  • And the news continues ...

    David Stevens|Updated Feb 19, 2017

And now, the rest of the story ... some updates to previous reports in this column: • Patsy Ruth Danner Weeks — the girl who loved Clovis Pioneers baseball so much she carried around players’ photos and autographs on baseballs for seven decades before her death in 2007 — might be pleased to know the memories she collected will continue. Her souvenirs have been placed with people who care about Clovis’ baseball history. Some went to the family of Ray “Power” Bauer, who played for the Pioneers from 1946 to 1951. Vernon Dobbs...

  • Bad news for parents, celebrities

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Feb 19, 2017

Be warned. The next few paragraphs include some bad news. That doesn’t make it fake news. • Bad news: We’ve got to wait another four years for a new Supreme Court nominee. That is, if elected leaders want to be consistent. President Donald Trump filed paperwork for a 2020 bid on Inauguration Day, and he had a rally Saturday in Florida. White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer repeatedly said the event was organized by the campaign. What was that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said last March while declining to give Oba...

  • 'Furry kids' another of life's blessings

    Rob Langrell|Updated Feb 19, 2017

I read a study recently that touted the benefits of being a dog owner. Having two furry kids at home, it piqued my interest. The study claimed that people who welcome canines into their homes have reduced blood pressure, an improved cardiovascular fitness, less stress in their lives and enjoy longer lifespans. Wow, sure beats going to the gym on a regular basis. I never had a pet when I was growing up. It just wasn’t a part of the lifestyle that our family lived. So it really...

  • YouTube pouring song about rain

    Karl Terry|Updated Feb 18, 2017

Did you enjoy the rain last week? I got over an inch at my house and, with more in the forecast for the day this column comes out, I had a little time to reflect on rain, gaze into a puddle and see my own reflection, do a rain dance, and check out YouTube for songs about rain. There are a lot of them. The first rain song we all learned as tykes was a little counter-intuitive to how we mostly felt after we got grown in this part of the country. Yeah, you don’t catch me s...
