We controlled the tempo of the game. Whatever we wanted to do, we controlled it.” Chisholm Rush poured in 25 points to lead Grady. He was joined in double figures by teammates Lu...

  • Christmas seems to come around once a week

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Dec 14, 2017

Years ago, when a friend and church member who was well into his eighties told me that for him Christmas seemed to come around about once a week, I believed him. But now, having tasted life at sixty, I’m getting Jay Butler’s point even more clearly. I might not say that Christmases seem to flit by “once a week,” but they surely do seem to come around far more quickly than they did when I was a child (or even, say, 25 or so). You don’t have to tell me that the rate of m.p.h....

    Updated Dec 14, 2017

City should remember all religions We all love this time of year. The holiday of Christmas is special. But what about the other holidays? The time is also right for Hanukkah. For some time now, the city and county have put up a tree and lights to celebrate Christmas, but there is nothing to do with a faith older than Christianity. That’s right. The Jewish calendar goes back to the start of creation placed at 3761 BC. But in these times, we all forget the meaning of Hanukkah. After the Jewish temple was desecrated in war, J...

  • Everything we really need comes from God

    Judy Brandon|Updated Dec 14, 2017

Not long ago, I was looking through some old papers of my daddy’s and I found a sermon named, “What do you need this Christmas?” It seems to me that Daddy’s question still stands for all of us today. So I will pose the question a little differently: What do you really need this Christmas? The word need is one of those words that we use casually. I have thought in my lifetime that I needed many things. When I was in third grade, all the girls on my block were getting Western...

Today’s family in need: These parents need help providing a Christmas for their three children. The husband recently received a job that will “help us tremendously once he’s out of training,” the mother said, “but I’m afraid until then we are struggling more than ever to get bills paid and keep up with the things our family needs.” The family relies on income support for food and medical services, but is “very behind on bills,” she said. “We’ve exhausted all loan options and it has resulted in us losing our car and the possi...

PORTALES — The Eastern New Mexico University Board of Regents will consider an increase to in-state tuition and fee rates at its meeting today in the Administration Building. Vice President of Business Affairs Scott Smart said the proposed increase of $288.96 for undergraduate students and $315.84 for graduate students in the 2018-2019 school year is meant to compensate for a lack of state appropriations. “We know that we’re not going to get any increase from the state, and so we’re increasing tuition and fees by slightl...

  • Travel brings home what's to like about home

    Audra Brown|Updated Dec 14, 2017

You can travel a long way without seeing a building tall enough to be mistaken for a grain elevator. You can go even farther before finding a body of water where you can’t easily see the opposite shore. So, what can you see on the high, flat plains that you can’t see anywhere else? I’ll admit to not noticing much to look at here on the home ground, but familiarity does tend to distract a person from what is right in front of their eyes. But when I travel off to some other plac...
