PORTALES — At Tuesday’s meeting the Roosevelt County Commission is expected to vote on two ordinances that went before the board last month. At the Nov. 20 meeting, County Attorney Randy Knudson said the ordinance promoting ethical conduct came from efforts around the state to institute language establishing standards of conduct and duties of local government officials. Martin Heinrich, D-New Mexico, said via press release. “The 2018 bipartisan Farm Bill will provide certainty for rural New Mexico and boost our state’s dynamic agriculture economy.” The bill passed the S...

CLOVIS — A panel of three district attorneys from other parts of the state are still reviewing the case of the Oct. 8 officer-involved deadly force incident in Clovis. Officials said last week there’s still no telling when they might make a decision on whether to press criminal charges against Officer Brent Aguilar or proceed differently. Rick Tedrow, district attorney for the 11th Judicial District’s first division, is the liaison for the New Mexico District Attorney’s Association panel system for evaluating conflic...

  • Commissioners table Clovis land purchase

    David Grieder|Updated Dec 15, 2018

CLOVIS — A land purchase under consideration Thursday by the Clovis City Commission was tabled pending additional review by the city’s Economic Incentive Board for potential water issues. The recommended purchase of 633 acres west of Cannon Air Force Base carries a fiscal impact of $1.25 million, but would amount to “converting cash assets to tangible assets,” Clovis Mayor David Lansford explained during Thursday evening’s commission meeting. There could be additional revenues from leasing the property while also allowing...

Guyer said the wind was consistently in the 50- to 60-mph range for a good portion of the day on Thursday in Curry and Roosevelt counties. Clovis resident Landon Lunsford...

  • Opinion: Another viewpoint: Learning license requirements shared responsibility

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated Dec 15, 2018

Wouldn’t it be great, now that the state Motor Vehicle Division has eased up on the requirements for a driver authorization card (DAC), if all New Mexicans showed up at the neighborhood MVD office with the documents they need, and all state and contract MVD clerks knew exactly what was required? Sure it would. But considering many drivers and clerks still don’t understand what’s required under the federal Real ID Act, which the state adopted two years ago, that’s overly optimistic. (A Real ID driver’s license is accepted...

  • Opinion: Electric vehicles offer breakthrough

    Jim Constantopoulos|Updated Dec 15, 2018

The most telling thing about the sharp swings in gasoline prices is that the United States is still beholden to Saudi Arabia despite the shale boom. That reflects the fundamental risk of continuing to rely on gasoline cars. However many of us don’t want to switch gears and replace conventional models we have been driving for many years, there’s a widening sense of unease that several types of geopolitical risks are rising all at once — volatility in some major oil-producing countries, unpredictable fuel costs, and deman...

  • Opinion: Dog park worth consideration

    Tom McDonald|Updated Dec 15, 2018

Geraldine Barber came by the Santa Rosa newspaper office recently to register a grievance — too many people are letting their dogs “do their business,” as they say, in other people’s yards. She was particularly disturbed by a big pile of dog poop in a church yard near her home. Such messes are the responsibility of the pet owner, though it’s hard to pick up after a canine running wild. Plus, we’ve heard concerns about packs of dogs that roam our town without restraint. We’ve even noticed occasional reports that someone was b...

  • Opinion: Messy neighbors can't be forced to meet our standards

    David Stevens|Updated Dec 15, 2018

The problem first appeared in biblical times. Deuteronomy 19:14 tried to resolve it: “You shall not move your neighbor’s landmark ...” Alas, property disputes remain. Public officials in Roswell and Chaves County have had a series of meetings recently to complain about private property owners who won’t clean up their messes. Members of the Roswell-Chaves County Economic Development Corp. are concerned that unkept property could have a negative impact on economic development. Sound familiar? Yep, pretty much the same problem...

  • Family Christmases were always memorable

    Updated Dec 14, 2018

At the first Christmas in Portales, Santa Claus showed up in cowboy boots, riding a grey donkey. That’s right, he didn’t exactly fit the description that Clement Clarke Moore had portrayed 76 years earlier in his poem “The Night Before Christmas.” But it was 1899 in Middle of Nowhere, New Mexico, and Santa had to make do just like everyone else. Christmas has changed a lot over the years. When I was growing up, Santa Claus and the J.C. Penney or Montgomery Ward wish books were responsible for our big Christmas. These days it...
