PORTALES — A Portales staple will soon be offering warmth and hospitality to anyone who might need it on Christmas. El Rancho Restaurant will hold a free lunch 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Dec. 25, according to co-owner Joey Garcia. The meal, which El Rancho has held for the past 12 years, came about after Garcia observed the massive gatherings his family would hold on Christmas day. "I just thought that was such a beautiful thing — that a family that big could actually like each other eno...

Getting into the Christmas spirit this year has come a little slow at the Terry household. That’s right; mid-week when I was writing this column, we still hadn’t put up the Christmas tree. Well, actually, it’s been up all year out in the garage. It wound up on top of the treadmill on the driver’s side of the garage. Every night since our construction project I get out of the car and into the Christmas tree. I promise I’m going to carry the tree into the living room and put s...

I love music in general, and I love the notes and rhythm just as much as I love the lyrics, but I have noticed many people don’t focus on the words in songs. Maybe it’s the writer in me, but I have to have the story/message to go with a song or a movie. No matter how great the rhythm is in a song or the storyline in a movie, the words being sung or the story being told has to reach me. I’ve also noticed that the songs I love the most are those with little play on the radio, and the lines from movies that capture my atten...
Patsy Ruth Danner Weeks loved baseball. The Texas Panhandle native dated one of the Clovis Pioneers briefly in the early 1950s, went to many of the team's games, got them to autograph baseballs for her, collected team photos. Baseball is how she met her husband. Jim Weeks happened to be around a group that included Patsy and her friends and he heard her chatting up the game. "My dad couldn't believe this girl was talking so much about baseball," Shelley Carmichael was told....
With commencements under way, I began writing my usual silly piece about graduates’ names affecting their destiny. For example, will Ms. Booth and Mr. Baker open a pastry kiosk in the North Plains Mall? However, by now, readers should be able to create their own fun pairings — so, instead, I will offer graduates my imaginary commencement speech. • • • Don’t agonize over dreams beyond your control. I would have preferred being a rock star or actor earning $20 million per...
One million dollars. The mere term makes me think of professional athletes, lotteries and Dr. Evil all at once. That’s the money spent on the bitter New Mexico secretary of state race between Democrat Maggie Toulouse Oliver and Republican Nora Espinoza. It made me wonder what our local candidates spent. I found unusual expenses, but nothing I couldn’t rationalize and nothing that said, “Dirty politics.” Here are a few things that may only interest me about local campaign finance reports: n Two candidates raised and spent noth...
Space explorer, warrior and statesman John Glenn, who died Thursday at the age of 95, had a remarkable impact on America during a period when the nation needed a boost. He lived a life filled with adventures and accomplishments most could only dream of, and he did it all while remaining an accessible everyman, quick to smile, and with a strong belief in God and country. Glenn flew on just two space flights, but set records with both. On his first flight, aboard the Project Mercury Friendship 7 in 1962, Glenn became the first...
