Local radio personality Steve Rooney was killed in a single-vehicle accident over the weekend. The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 20, 2016

LOS ALAMOS — Clovis High’s swimming teams headed out for a nine-team invitational on Saturday morning and a dual meet broke out. CHS squads were able to make it to Los Alamos for the Bill Hudson Memorial Invitational. Unfortunately, the other seven visiting teams — most from the Albuquerque area — didn’t make it so it turned into a dual with the homestanding Hilltoppers. No team scores were kept, but CHS coach Vincent de Maio said it was good training in a 7,300-foot elevation. “It was a great opportunity,” he said. “And th...

ENMU (7-3) was on a six-game winning streak heading into the matchup with the No. 21 Vikings (7-3). The start was the best for the Greyhounds since 2006, with the streak being the longest since Eastern won seven straight in 2003-04. “I’m very proud of these girls,” ENMU women’s coach Josh Prock said. “They’ve battled through a lot of adversity th...

  • Stevens: Tumbleweeds belong in barbed wire

    David Stevens|Updated Dec 20, 2016

The prairie pests are back. They were attacking vehicles across the region late last week before Saturday's wind and snow weighed them down, forcing them into barbed wire fences and up against barns where they belong. Encyclopedia.com describes tumbleweeds as plants that break from their roots at maturity and dry "into a rounded tangle of light, stiff branches." Then they roll before the wind, covering long distances and scattering their evil seeds. (I added the commentary;...

  • Ordinary people gave extraordinary news

    Curtis Shelburn|Updated Dec 20, 2016

This Christmas I find myself wondering, yet again, about those Bethlehem shepherds. It’s possible, of course, that the Almighty chose these particular sheepherders as recipients of the angelic birth announcement of his Son because they were a sheep-shearing cut above the other sheep guys in the region. Maybe they were better-dressed than most, draped in new camo robes ordered from Zimfela’s Catalog complete with Velcro-secured mesh pockets for their ZX-7 night vision sheep-finding goggles. Perhaps they were unusually pro...

A preliminary investigation shows the vehicle collided with a tree. Rooney leaves behind a wife and four children. A self-described radio junkie and a n...

  • 'Drunk' is tough to judge

    Eamon Scarbrough|Updated Dec 20, 2016

A new statewide campaign is aimed at preventing over-serving of alcohol, but managers of local bars say knowing when they’re over-serving can pose a challenge. According to a press release by the New Mexico Department of Transportation, “Buzzkill” is a campaign aimed at emphasizing “that it is a server’s duty to cut off drunk patrons.” The campaign, unveiled Dec. 13, consists of ads that warn against over-serving, as well as a video designed to help servers and bartenders identify drunken patrons “before they get in a vehicle...

Slaying motion hearing vacated CLOVIS — A motion hearing scheduled for Monday in the case of a man on trial for a 2003 slaying was vacated in district court. The hearing was scheduled for a prosecution request for a video deposition against William Hadix, 68, because the witness in question was in poor health and was unlikely to live to testify in the April trial. District Attorney Andrea Reeb notified the court before the hearing that the witness’ prognosis had improved and assuaged those concerns. Hadix, 68, faces cha...
