  • Safe haven law saves lives

Mia’s story is good holiday fare. That must have been what the Washington Post editors were thinking when they put her smiling face on the front page. Whether they considered the deeper implications is not so clear, as we shall see. Mia Fleming is a 20-year-old college student who was adopted as an infant. This year, she set out to find not her birthparents, but the two teenagers who found her on a Fairfax, Va., townhouse’s front steps. Emily Yanich and Chris Astle were both 15 in 1989. They acknowledge that on the aft... Full story

  • Distracted driving tough to enforce

    Freedom Newspapers

For a while now I have observed the alarm about the use of cell phones while driving. There is hardly any doubt that doing so is hazardous. In his Dec. 7 article for The New York Times, Matte Richtel chronicles some of this. He reports on Bob Lucky, an executive director at Bell Labs from 1982-92. Lucky said he knew that drivers talking on cell phones were not focused fully on the road. But he did not think much about it or discuss it and supposed others did not, either, given the industry’s booming fortunes. “If you...

  • Immigration reform needs streamlining

Freedom Communications Congress’ latest effort to reform our nation’s immigration laws has begun. Unfortunately, the Comprehensive Immigration Reform for America’s Security and Prosperity Act of 2009 offers little in the way of real reform. The proposal, given the unwieldy name to create the ASAP acronym, is touted and condemned as a new means to enable undocumented immigrants to become legal residents. Under this latest “amnesty” program, those immigrants can legalize their status if they register their presence with the...

During her daily six-hour post at Walgreen’s, Cindy Mendoza makes sure to say hello, goodbye and “Merry Christmas” to everyone — whether they put anything in the Salvation Army kettle or just walk on by. “I’m a people person,” Mendoza said. “I like interacting with the people.” But she was left speechless when “the cowboy” emptied his pockets Friday, filling the kettle with silver and gold. A smattering of gold and silver coins were dropped into Mendoza’s kettle, with a value estimated between $8,000 and $10,000, d... Full story

  • Area residents remain charitable despite sluggish economy

    Argen Duncan

Charitable organizations in Roosevelt and Curry counties are reporting donations mostly equal or above last year’s levels as Christmas approaches. Most of those organizations say they have enough to meet community requests for the holiday. Food Bank of Eastern New Mexico Executive Director Nancy Taylor said her organization has been holding a canned food drive since the weekend before Thanksgiving. “Our need has increased a little over a third compared to last year for the charitable agencies we serve,” she said. “That’s a bu...
