RGH issued a public notice Monday regarding the potential theft of patients’ personal information that was discovered on Nov. 14. RGH found that a digital imaging server used in radiology that contained patients’ detailed information had contracted malware. • CHS pulls away

    Peter Stein - Staff Writer|Updated Dec 21, 2019

CLOVIS — Through Friday, Clovis’ boys basketball team was 2-for-2 last week. The Wildcats hosted a very solid Americas team from El Paso late Friday afternoon and broke open a close game to win 61-48. Three days after a lopsided victory over area rival Portales, the Wildcats had gone 2-0 for the week heading into Saturday night’s home game against Rio Rancho. Still a reasonable nine-point difference at halftime and just a seven-point margin early in the third quarter Frida...

  • Rams find tough task with Littlefield

    Dave Wagner - Staff Writer|Updated Dec 21, 2019

PORTALES — Portales boys coach Rickie McBroom figured he had bigger things to worry about on Friday night than a basketball game. McBroom, who underwent surgery for prostate cancer in October, said he received word before Friday’s contest against Littlefield that everything has checked out well in his treatment. That made Friday’s hard-fought 60-54 loss to the Wildcats at the Ram Athletic Center at least a bit easier to accept. PHS (2-3) trailed all the way except for two early ties, but kept pushing Littlefield (13-1) until...

  • Greyhound women sweep slate

The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 21, 2019

PORTALES — Junior Alivia Lewis posted her fourth double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds, and Eastern New Mexico defended its homecourt with a 16-0 run to bridge the second and third quarters in an 80-69 victory over Oklahoma Christian Saturday afternoon at Greyhound Arena. Sophomore Zamorye Cox added 12 points and three steals for the Greyhounds (9-2), who remained perfect at home and moved above .500 in Lone Star Conference play for the first time this season. The Green and Silver led by as many as 17 in...

  • Lady 'Cats pull split

    Peter Stein - Staff Writer|Updated Dec 21, 2019

CLOVIS — After playing four games at far-reaching locations last week the Clovis girls basketball team was glad to be home this past Thursday. And what a homecoming it was for the Lady Wildcats, who transformed a halftime deficit into a double-digit victory, 43-33, over Alamogordo in their first game at Rock Staubus Gymnasium since Dec. 7. Down 19-14 at the break, 21-14 early in the third quarter, the Lady ’Cats went on an 8-0 run and kept running to their fourth victory of...

  • Wildcats work quickly in win over Rams

    Peter Stein - Staff Writer|Updated Dec 21, 2019

PORTALES — The Clovis and Portales boys basketball teams won’t play each other in the state tournament, the Wildcats being 5A, the Rams 4A. But they always like the challenge of facing a competitive opponent in general. And they also like playing each other specifically because they’re local rivals, separated only by a 20-mile stretch of highway. Tuesday night at the Ram Athletic Center, the teams squared off in this year’s installment of the area rivalry, with the Wildcat...

  • Tuesday prep roundup: Steers edge Lockney

The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 21, 2019

FARWELL — It took just about everything for the Farwell Steers to get past Lockney on Tuesday night. Down 14-7 at the quarter, Farwell rallied to grab a one-point lead at halftime and survived a seesaw second half for a 48-45 victory over the Longhorns. “They’re pretty quick; Lockney’s always pretty scrappy,” Steers coach Shane Perkins said. “This was our 11th game over the last couple of weeks, and I think we may have been a little tired.” Junior Jonathan Mora was the only player in double figures for Farwell (9-5) with 12...

  • Hounds rally to shock Lions

    Kevin Wilson - Staff writer|Updated Dec 21, 2019

PORTALES — In a season where the most familiar thing has been frustration, a quick 10-2 deficit certainly seemed in place at Greyhound Arena Thursday night. But just enough went the Greyhounds’ way in the second half, and an offensive rebound went the way of Marvin Mapaga in the closing seconds. The junior forward made the second of two free throws to break a tie, and Arkansas-Fort Smith couldn’t connect on a long heave in the final second as Eastern New Mexico snuck out w...

  • Portales girls take loss at Frenship

The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 21, 2019

WOLFFORTH, Texas — Wade Fraze isn’t saying his team would have beaten Texas Class 6A power Frenship under different circumstances, but it might have helped. The Lady Tigers stormed to a 24-point halftime lead on Tuesday and cruised past the Lady Rams 60-27 behind a balanced attack led by 10 points each from senior guard Ashlyn Caddel and sophomore forward Addison McClure. “They’ve had more games than we’ve had practices,” Fraze said. “They’re one of the best teams around here, and they can all shoot. “We played them last...

  • Elida slowly building to contention

    Dave Wagner - Staff writer|Updated Dec 21, 2019

TEXICO — Four years ago, the Elida boys basketball program was in mothballs. Since rebooting it in 2016, though, the Tigers have made steady progress. They entered this weekend’s Citizens Bank tournament with a 7-0 record and a pair of tournament titles, and ready to really challenge themselves. Things didn’t go as planned on Thursday as the Tigers were overwhelmed by Class 3A Tohatchi 76-56. But Elida got back on the winning track the next day, scoring at least 20 point...
