Editor's note: Gordon Greaves spent 50 years as a journalist, most of them in Portales, writing the popular By The Way column. He died in 1984. Greaves wrote this column for The Portales Daily News published Dec. 23, 1951. Christmas is for everybody, but the kids make it worthwhile. Our daughter, Becky, who is four fingers and a half of her thumb old, gave explicit instructions on what should go into this Christmas column. It all started when she was looking at pictures of...

  • Our people: Pittsburgh native likes a good steak

Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 23, 2023

James Myers came to Clovis from Pittsburgh by way of Washington, to open one of the city's marijuana dispensaries, Score 420 on North Prince Street, where he is southern New Mexico district director for the statewide business. He took some time out of his schedule Tuesday to tell The News about himself and the importance of the cut of beef known as a tomahawk steak. Q: What brought you to Clovis? A: I was brought here by the Score 420 partners to open the Clovis shop. We were...

  • This Christmas full of grief, but I also have hope

    Karl Terry, Local columnist|Updated Dec 23, 2023

To say it hasn’t been a joyous Christmas holiday for me would be an understatement. I have boxes of Christmas decorations in arm’s length of where I get out of the car every night but the only hint within my home that it’s Christmas this year are the Christmas cards I’ve carefully placed on the mantel as I’ve received each of them. It’s my first Christmas without my sweet wife in 42 years and it hurts — a lot. I knew I would miss her, I just had no idea how much. Add to...

As for the Lady Wildcats, they cruised to a pair of victories to reach the finals of the Plateau Holiday tournament at Rock Staubus Gym. Lewis funneled in 14 points and reached the 1,000 mark with a basket early in the second period as CHS crushed Silver 63-18 in a semifinal tilt. Meantime, the boys rallied from an early deficit to lead at halftime, only to see the Eagles overhaul them in the second half and post a 69-65 victory. Junior gua...

  • Talking, laughing and storytelling – that's good feeling

Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 23, 2023

Once upon a time I had a car wreck. This tale is how the car wreck led to my best Christmas ever. It was a stupid car wreck, just me, taking an Appalachian mountain road too fast, flying through the air and landing in a creek. After the wreck, well, I had no car. With no car I lost my travelin' salesman job and after I lost my job I lost my place at a rooming house. And with me living paycheck to paycheck, well, I was just "S.O.L.," which in a family friendly newspaper stands...

  • A turkey gets her Christmas wish

Madison Willis, The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 23, 2023

When I was in fourth grade, I remember our teacher would make us create letters asking Santa what we wanted for Christmas. As most kids would groan and talk about the various toys they wanted for the holiday, I would always treat my letters with heavy consideration. There was only one thing I ever wanted as a kid and that was to see my dad for Christmas. My dad had joined the Army as an air traffic controller. My mom said he joined about four years after I was born; since...

  • Autumn way better than One Direction tix

Landry Sena, The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 23, 2023

When I think back on the 23 Christmases I've experienced, so many memories flood my mind. To name a few, the EZ Bake Oven I got from Santa when I was 7, I think? Maybe I was 8. Also, the acoustic guitar when I was 16 is up on the list as well. And of course, when I was 13, my oldest sister Lauren told us she was having a baby by having me open a box that had a pacifier in it as the clue. I, however, really thought I was getting One Direction tickets that year and truly...

Murrillo also had seven rebounds, four assists and three blocks, the latter moving him into fifth place on the school's all-time...

  • Cats outlast Eagles at buzzer

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 23, 2023

A coaching move helped win Clovis High's game on Thursday against Navajo Prep. And it wasn't even authored by Wildcats coach Josh Mattox. After taking the lead on a layup by senior guard Keilyn Parker with 13 seconds left, Mattox, at the suggestion of senior guard Manny Gutierrez during a timeout, inserted 6-foot-2 junior J.J. Saiz for him when play resumed. It paid off when Saiz was able to get enough of the ball to force a held ball as Eagles senior Jude Thomas tried to go...

Brockett said the man was hospitalized in Lubbock in “extremely critical condition” but was still alive Thursday night. The incident occurred about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday inside the firing range of the building. There were no witnesses, the sheriff said. The victim was the only person in the firing-range portion of the building when the incident occurred, he said. The...

  • Roosevelt courthouse may soon see renovations

Madison Willis, The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 23, 2023

The Roosevelt County Courthouse may soon see renovations after receiving funding from the Roosevelt County Commission. Court Executive Officer Kevin Spear along with District Judge Donna Mowrer presented the request to the commission on Tuesday. Spear said the commission would have to match a $1 million project with $500,000 in order for the court to get funding from the Administrative Office of Courts. Mowrer said the court doesn’t have the funding unless the county can assist. Commissioners voted 5-0 to approve the $...

The funding comes from a program “that provides equitable health care to the nation’s highest-need communities, wrote Heinrich’s Deputy Communications Director Caty Payette in an email. “We’re confident this funding will help to address health care shortages in New Mexico and make sure families can access the care they n...

  • Opinion: Handling Santa myth job of parents everywhere

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated Dec 23, 2023

Back in the 1990s, as a father of young children and a journalist committed to honest reporting, I became concerned with the whole Santa Claus “lie” that I was perpetuating with my own little girls. So I asked my father how he handled the whole myth about Santa. After all, I don’t remember ever thinking of Dad as a liar when it came to such matters, nor do I remember a day when I went from being a believer to a humbug, so I figured Dad must have done it right. For me while growing up, Christmas was all about Jesus’ birthda...

  • Opinion: Celebrate Jesus' birth with joy, not as slogan

    Christine Flowers, Syndicated content|Updated Dec 23, 2023

Around this time of year, I start seeing posts on social media about how Jesus was a refugee, an asylum seeker, an immigrant, etc. It’s based upon a version of the Nativity story, where the Holy Family was forced to “flee” to Bethlehem to avoid persecution. This is at best a “whisper down the lane” misinterpretation of the Christ child’s birth, and at worst an attempt by modern day activists and rhetoricians to frame Jesus as a liberal icon who represents modern day victims...

  • Opinion: Sacrifice a submarine to compensate a victim or two

    Walter Rubel, Syndicated content|Updated Dec 23, 2023

Last summer I wrote a column praising the United States Senate for finally passing a bill to compensate those in southern New Mexico who suffered illness and death following exposure to the world’s first atomic blast at Trinity site. I ended the column with this: “That’s the good news. The bad news is that the bill now moves to the House, which seems much more interested in exploring the cocaine-fueled antics of Hunter Biden than doing anything to help the people they serve.” Now, the House has stripped funding in the def...

  • Opinion: No Christmas Truce likely this year

    Rube Render, Local columnist|Updated Dec 23, 2023

Today is Christmas Eve. Now that I am middle-aged, I have a tendency to reflect on Christmas days that have happened instead of Christmas days that will happen. I am blessed to be able to live with minimal assistance and to have my family around me when I need help. What follows are some Christmas memories. The chapel at St. Anthony’s, where my sister, little brother and I spent our early years, was decorated the same way every year. There were two large trees, one on each sid...

  • Opinion: 'Tis season to be more neighborly

    Chicago Tribune, Syndicated content|Updated Dec 23, 2023

You rake your leaves and wake up the next morning only to see more on your lawn. You look to your neighbor’s lawn and realize their leaves have found their way onto your lawn. You say to yourself, “If only they would rake their leaves, my yard would be fine.” How do we approach this situation? Do we let our frustration boil up? Do we talk to them about it? Do we simply stop talking to our neighbor altogether? Or do we offer to rake our neighbor’s yard? I prefer the last option. After all, I am a product of the 1970s, the tim...

  • Opinion: Liberty greatest gift you can give

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated Dec 23, 2023

Just about the most valuable gift any human can give another is to fully respect the other person’s liberty. As long as they aren’t harming anyone else’s life, liberty, or property you don’t interfere. Live and let live. You can do this for those you love and for those you only tolerate. You can even give this gift to people you don’t like at all; people whose way of life or politics is disgusting to you, as long as they aren’t victimizing anyone. The hardest part is being ho...

  • Assessor, sheriff appointed by Curry commission

Madison Willis, The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 23, 2023

Curry County commissioners on Tuesday named Sam Kelley as the new county assessor. The vote was 3-2 with Commissioners Seth Martin and Brad Bender opposing. The position became available after the abrupt resignation of former Assessor Randa Jesko two months ago. Commissioners also unanimously appointed Michael Brockett acting sheriff following the death of Mike Reeves early this month. Brockett had been Reeves’ chief deputy and will be acting sheriff until after November’s election. Commission Chairman Robert Thornton sai...
