CLOVIS — You’ve heard of gym rats. John Hisel has been kind of a rope rat. Just like gym rats are always in the gym, or at least dribbling a basketball whenever they can, John has had a rope in his hands from the time he was a little kid. He took to roping early, became skilled at it. Skilled enough that the weekend before last John was crowned a 2019 world champion at the Junior Worlds Open Team Roping Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada. John took an interest in roping whe...
TEXICO — If Saturday night’s Citizens Bank Tournament championship game was just one quarter long, the Texico boys basketball players could think of it as one of their best performances of the season so far. And they would have easily reclaimed the tournament title that Farwell won from them last year. But, high school basketball lasts four quarters, and after a blazing start against the Steers at Texico High School, the Wolverines faded a bit in each successive quarter. Far...

Junior guard Ibn Zaid led three players in double figures for ENMU (3-7, 3-2 Lone Star Confe...

Peace on Earth. While it sounds like a wonderful ambition — and under the right conditions, it would be nice — not all peace is good. A cemetery is peaceful. No one is more peaceful than the dead. People who have given up are peaceful. Why fight against something that has already defeated you? I’m no pacifist. I don’t support unnecessary violence like the kind governments depend on, but I know defensive violence can be necessary. When I first heard the story of the First W...
Let’s take a look at some of the political and governmental happenings this year in New Mexico and where they might go in 2020. This year started out with one of the most significant legislative sessions in years, thanks to a 2018 tsunami that flooded the state with a Democratic Party super-majority. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham rode a wave of support into the governor’s job, and state government took a hard left turn, leaving the Susana Martinez years in the rearview mirror. In a 60-day session, lawmakers ran roughshod ove...
We reckon that what you think about the impeachment of President Donald Trump is influenced greatly by your opinion of the man and his leadership capacity. If you previously were inclined to oppose him, you likely support Trump’s impeachment and removal from office. If you previously supported — or at least tolerated — him, you probably still do. We’re not reading minds. We are reading polls. Last Wednesday night, the Democrat-led U.S. House approved two articles of impeachment against Trump in near-unanimous party-l...

Last week, county commissioners took steps they hope will prevent that from happening again. The county adopted a “two-person rule,” meaning two individuals must be present in order to handle any money obtained by the sheriff’s office and both individuals must count the money after each handling. “This is the governing body’s resolution to the incident in working with the sheriff’s office to enh...

CLOVIS — If nothing else, the Clovis High Wildcats have played a fairly challenging early-season schedule. That resulted in some losses out of the gate, but the Cats have now strung together four consecutive wins after pulling away late from Rio Rancho 68-53 on Saturday night at Rock Staubus Gym. Senior forward Darion “Ro” Morgan led four players in double figures for the Cats (5-3) with 15 points, and also grabbed a team-leading nine rebounds. “I knew it would be a tough game,” CHS coach Jaden Isler said. “Both teams played...
