This last month my husband and I have had a lot of discussions about the Salvation Army bell ringers. I am not sure the weather had a lot to do with the fact that the donations were down. I honestly think it had to do with the people who were supposed to be doing this job. For example, there was one lady that the only way you would know she was a bell ringer was because she had on one of the red coats. She had the can in the middle of the walkway and then she was sitting in a folding chair about 10 feet from the collecting...

The quake — the fourth most powerful to hit the Earth in the last century and the most powerful in the last 40 years — was so strong that it shifted a 620-mile geologic plate, according to The Assoc...

I ask a lot of questions to people around the city — it goes with the territory. But every once in a while, I get a question thrown back at me. A few weeks ago, I was more than prepared to answer. The question is one we ask our Personality Plus subjects every week: If you were a superhero, what would your name and powers be? I got this question a while ago, and responded faster than a speeding bullet. I wouldn’t have increased strength, keener senses or a superior intellect. Also, I figure X-ray vision would be highly ove...

Cows with pneumonia stuck in the mud is both a picture of helplessness, and for area cattle raisers, a symbol of lost profits. The financial impact of poor weather strikes dairies and feed lots from both sides. “Their costs goes up and their revenue goes down,” said G.H. Cain, director of member services for Dairy Farmers of America southwest region. He said dairy farmers spend more time and m...
So far as I know the crops are all in and the farmers can start plans for another year farming, ranching and watching the winter wheat grow as the cattle fatten up grazing on it. The effort brought renewed international interest in the legend, made the front page of The New York Times and was printed in roughly 2,000 newspapers acros...
Area milo farmers did not have to worry about a drought this year, but instead had a different type of problem. Harvesting usually takes place from late October to November, however, this year some milo farmers were unable to harvest until December because of the rainy weather. Chester Harth of Rogers, who has been farming milo for 47 years, was not able to harvest his milo fields because of the cold weather. “It’s been very cha...
