  • Lansford won't seek re-election as mayor

The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 30, 2019

CLOVIS -- The city of Clovis will have a new mayor in 2020, as David Lansford announced he would not seek a sixth term in the office. Lansford confirmed his decision in an email to The News Monday night, briefly after chairing a short Clovis City Commission meeting that dealt with property and liability insurance for the upcoming year. Citizens of Clovis first elected Lansford in 1996, the first year a mayor was elected at large. Previously, the office was voted on within the city commission following each municipal...

Dana Branham and Lavendrick Smith, The Dallas Morning News|Updated Dec 30, 2019

DALLAS — Details about the gunman who killed two people inside a White Settlement church before he was fatally shot began to emerge Monday, but authorities have offered no motive for his attack. The Texas Department of Public Safety said Keith Thomas Kinnunen, 43, of River Oaks opened fire during a Sunday morning service at the West Freeway Church of Christ, killing Anton Wallace, 64, of Fort Worth and Richard White, 67 of River Oaks. The FBI said Kinnunen had roots in the area but indicated he may have been transient, w...

  • Opinion: Cowboys should look toward Urban Meyer

Tim Cowlishaw, The Dallas Morning News|Updated Dec 30, 2019

But it won’t surprise me if Meyer quickly emerges as the front-runner whenever Jerry Jones decides to make it clear that Jason Garrett’s time here is done. Meyer’s great strength — outrecruiting the opposition — is irrelevant at this level. He would have to beat others in the draft although his knowledge of current college players cou...

    Peter Stein - Staff Writer|Updated Dec 28, 2019

CLOVIS — With the clock having almost run out on 2019, the Clovis boys basketball team was 10 games into its 2019-20 season heading into Saturday night’s holiday classic tournament championship game against Albuquerque High. 10 games in is a good time to look at the measuring stick, see how things are progressing, how a team is evolving as it makes its way toward its District 4-5A schedule and state playoffs. The Clovis boys were 7-3 after Friday night’s 78-30 rout of Miyamura...

  • Clovis girls go 1-2 at Alamogordo

The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 28, 2019

ALAMOGORDO — Things didn’t go well for Clovis High’s girls on Saturday, especially after the first quarter. Trailing 10-8 after the first stanza, the Lady Wildcats were outscored 35-13 over the next two frames and dropped a 58-28 decision to Los Lunas in the fifth-place game of Alamogordo’s Kiwanis Classic. Senior guard Yolanda Griego hit five of the Lady Tigers’ 10 3-pointers en route to a game-high 16 points. Los Lunas (7-4) also got 14 points from junior guard Mia Guest and 11 from senior forward-guard Dani Ross. Meantime,...
