  • Holidays less trashy than previous year

    Thomas Garcia

Chances are the day after Christmas you took a heap of trash out to a bin that was either full, almost full or overflowing with garbage. But area trash crews report collecting less waste after Christmas compared to last year. And they are not expecting much of an increase after the New Year. After the holidays, crews around the area got an earlier start in order to catch up after having the holiday off. Crews are working double time to get the trash collected, said Oscar Macias, assistant supervisor at the Clovis Sanitation...

  • Look to new decade, keep past in mind

Freedom New Mexico The general reverence for New Year’s Day dates back to the most ancient of times. Counted among the gods of the Roman pantheon was Janus, the two-headed deity who inspired the modern name for the first month of the year. One of Janus’ faces supposedly looked back into the past to recall good deeds and to learn from the misfortunes of the past year. The second face looked ahead with hope for brighter days to come and to a time for spiritual rebirth with the arrival of spring. While Janus is no longer wid... Full story

  • Health insurance not an entitlement

    Tibor Machan

I am fond of affordability. That extends to insurance. My home, car, health and sometimes travel insurance would at their best be something I can well afford. But then this is so with whatever it is that I am in the market for — shoes, food, furniture, electronics, etc. I like a good deal. Now and then I do engage in a little bit of charity purchase, as when I buy wine from those who spend some of what they gain on supporting breast cancer research. Even the people who come to clean my house could come less often, but I...

  • Perfectly OK to go against herd

FFA and 4-H youngsters learn early that livestock they’re raising for the shows eat better and grow faster if they’re not alone. Two or more steers or lambs fed together compete for the feed, and everybody gains faster. When show lambs are let out of their pen to run for exercise, they stay together. They are herd animals. Humans have always taken advantage of that herd mentality. In the old days when cattle herds were driven to the railhead to be loaded onto the train taking them to market, a Judas goat accompanied the...

  • New year brings clean slate

    Joan Clayton

11 has come and gone with its challenges. With so many issues in government, chaos in culture, economy and all kinds of personal situations life would seem to be the pits. Not so dear reader. We are living in the “meanwhiles.” Whatever our life span covers, the real life is “losing your life to find it.” “For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it” (Luke 9:24 NIV). God never abandons his child. One of my favorite Scriptures tells about his loyalty. “The Lord lives! P...

  • Texas tour full of memories, friends

I made the trip to Texas this fall and was able to revisit a couple of monumental memories, just to see if they were real. When I was going to veterinary school in Colorado I worked summers in the feedlots managed by Diamond A Cattle Co. The second year I hired on at the 50,000 head yard in Thermal, Calif. Yes. Thermal … a summer job. I was batchin’, eating greasy tacos and renting a room with no air conditioning. Occasionally one of the men on the doctor crew would take me home with him for lunch. I’m sure his wif...

  • Accepting Christ defining moment in life

    Judy Brandon

Here we are in the year 2010 and it seems we should be just half way through 2009. I have to agree with the saying that time “really does fly by.” The Psalmist wrote about time when he was thinking about how his little short life fit into the whole scope of eternity. He said: “My times are in your hands.” (Psalm 31:15). I know that is true. Time does fly … and our lives are short. Moments add up to hours and hours accumulate to days and days go into years and years stac...

  • Elida woman inducted to 4-H Hall of Fame

    PNT Staff

Glenda Parrish Anthony of Elida was inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame earlier this month for working at something she just might enjoy more than anything. Anthony was among 13 given a place of honor Dec. 15 for their service to the program. Roosevelt County Extension Home Economist Connie Moyer said she has known Anthony for 13 years. “She has been dedicated to the 4-H program for many years,” Moyer said. “She was a 4-Her, a 4-H parent and 4-H leader and now she works with her grandchildren all the time.” Anthony said she co...

  • Year in review: Major crimes down

    Sharna Johnson

CNJ file photo An investigator holds up homicide victim Clifford Webber's New Mexico driver's identification card found in his wallet by collecting evidence at a house on west 14th Street. The case was one of three homicides in Clovis and Curry County during 2009. Local law enforcement focused on bolstering staffing and expertise, working to strengthen departments in 2009. And if crime statistics are any indication, the work appears to be paying off for Clovis. Index crimes... Full story

  • Lack of cooperation slows shooting investigation

    CNJ Staff

Lack of cooperation from victims and witnesses is stunting an investigation into a shooting Wednesday night on Mora Street. Around 5:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 1200 block of Mora for multiple reports of shots fired. Police believe a home that had just been burglarized a block over was the target of the shooting. The burglary was reported at 1304 Mora and the victim reported discovering a bullet hole through a mirror inside the house. Clovis Police Chief Steve Sanders said investigators recovered stolen property...
