Clovis’ mayor’s position and four City Commission seats will be contested when voters go to the polls on March 5. Thirteen city residents signed up Tuesday for six positions on the ballot. After several years of dormancy, the city of Clovis is looking to revive the Local Growth Management Committee to better seek ways to support the mission of Cannon Air Force Base. The Clovis Police Department and the Curry County Sheriff’s Office will split a $23,000 Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Grant. The Roosevelt County Commission has drafted an agreement that will decrease annual funding for rural fire departments by $2,000. Representatives from those departments were at Tuesday’s Commission meeting to express their concerns. The Clovis City Commission on Thursday approved $8.6 million for road work on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. City Manager Justin Howalt said the funding is for Seventh Street to 21st Street, where the city plans to create a more comfortable and safer driving experience.
