My laptop computer went mute recently. I can’t tell you exactly when, but I’m sure it lost its voice several days before I noticed it had lost its voice. Its speakers, I knew — or thought I knew — were fine; they just were not speaking. As emergencies go, it was way down the list from a house fire and just maybe a bit above being subjected to another smarmy ad on TV by a politician going low to assure you that he is not a low-life politician or, at least, not as slimy as his d...

Choral music has always been the main passion for Sean Galloway, the director of choirs at Clovis High School, and this year the payoff has been a state championship for the school's chamber choir, as well as top honors for the Wildcats' Women's Select choir. Galloway came to Clovis 10 years ago with his wife Diana on what they call "our Great Southwest Adventure," an escape for cold, snowy winters in Michigan, where both grew up and attended college. With his choir students...
On this date ... 1901: Thomas Edward “Black Jack” Ketchum, described as the “most noted desperado of the Southwest” by the Galveston Daily News, was hanged in Clayton. Ketchum, a self-confessed train robber accused of multiple crimes including murder, was also a rancher near Tucumcari who rode on many trail drives. He was hanged for a failed train robbery in which no one was killed. They hung him so hard, the history books tell us, his head came off. The native Texan, who lost an arm in the botched train robbery, seemed...
