MELROSE - Melrose seniors Logan DeVaney and Johanna Roybal had one final chance to play on their home court on Saturday, and as all-stars no less. On this date ... 1977: Farwell senior Kathy Booth had been named to the Class A all-state basketball team. That was the latest in a long line of high school athletic honors she had received. Booth had previously been named to the Amarillo Globe-News Panhandle Plains Super Team and to the all-district team. She also played golf and ran track for the “Steerettes,” whose nickname has since been changed to Lady Blue. Kathy Booth went on to play college basketball for the Wayland Baptist Flying Queens in Plainview. Pages Past is...
BERNALILLO - It's the same old, same old for the Melrose girls basketball team. On Friday night, the Lady Buffs reached their eighth consecutive state championship game, turning back No. 8 To'Hajiilee 50-35 at Bernalillo H.S. In Saturday morning's title clash at The Pit in Albuquerque, they were slated to face a familiar foe in District 6-1A rival Fort Sumner (20-4), which defeated another 6-1A member in Logan 37-30 in Friday's early semifinal tilt. Melrose was seeking its...
ALBUQUERQUE — Since last they met, Kirtland Central’s girls regained the services of a key player while their Portales High counterparts lost one of theirs. PHS won the first matchup 51-35 on Jan. 6 at the Ram Athletic Center as part of the Portales Shootout. This time, the top-seeded Lady Broncos pulled away with the help of a quick start in the second half, posting a 48-43 win on Thursday afternoon in a Class 4A girls state semifinal matchup at The Pit. In Friday night’s title clash, Kirtland Central (27-5) wrapped up th...
Robert Duran disarmed trouble with a grin — and the ability to use words as a shield. "He had the gift of gab," said Kyle Elliot, Duran's longtime law enforcement partner and onetime police academy classmate. "The verbal judo, being able to talk people down who were agitated or angry or violent. He always used his brain first. We would always say, 'Your biggest weapon is your brain.' " Duran's intellect, humor and heart made him a natural for public service, friends of the late Santa Fe police officer said Thursday, little m...
LAWTON, Okla. — Eastern New Mexico University’s women got off to a fast start and kept it up for much of the game, but Cameron was able to pull out a down-to-the-wire 88-85 win over the Greyhounds on Tuesday night in the opening round of the Lone Star Conference women’s basketball tournament. The victory advanced the sixth-seeded Aggies (17-10) to a quarterfinal match on Friday against third-seeded Texas A&M-Commerce (24-3) at Frisco, Texas. “It was everything you expect a Lone Star Conference game to be,” first-yea...

ELIDA — After running off a 12-game winning streak earlier this season, Clovis Christian’s boys have been a bit up-and-down lately. Of course, the Eagles have generally been facing good competition. Saturday night was certainly one of those “up” nights for CCS. The Eagles, who lost at home to Dora by 31 points on Friday night, buried 11 3-pointers, including five in the opening period, en route to a 76-70 non-district victory over Elida. The teams meet again on Saturday at CCS in their regular-season finale. Junior Carter...
ELIDA — Senior Rylan Creighton scored with four seconds left off a full-court pass from junior Aiden Yates, giving Elida’s boys a 64-62 victory over Hagerman on Tuesday night in a battle of highly-ranked small-school teams. Hagerman (17-2), which came back with a 56-41 win at New Mexico Military on Wednesday night, is ranked second in Class 2A while the Tigers (16-3) are No. 2 in Class 1A. Exactly 10 years ago, the Supreme Court was presented with a case involving affirmative action. The majority rejected a policy employed by the University of Texas that allowed it to consider race as one factor in its admissions decisions. A majority of the court rejected the university’s arguments that this was a good way to achieve “diversity,” and sent the case back to the lower courts to determine if “strict scrutiny” justified the use of the policy. Justice Clarence...
ALBUQUERQUE — Saturday’s Tom Casey Memorial Invite swim meet, hosted by Albuquerque Academy, wasn’t exactly what Clovis High co-coach Gordy Westerberg had in mind. In normal meets, he said, teams may have two or three entries in a relay and four individuals per event. This meet restricted teams to one relay and two individuals per event. “My original plan was to focus on the relays and put kids in one individual race, most likely an ‘off’ race — one they normally don’t get to swim — so there went my plan out the window,...
TEXICO - Two years, a pandemic and a change of venue. But the Logan Longhorns were back like they never left. The defending champions made it two straight titles in the Eastern Plains Athletic Conference girls bracket, using a series of timely runs to outlast top-seeded Fort Sumner 42-36 Saturday night at Texico Sports Arena. Kyra Conway had 19 points to lead all scorers, including five points in a 9-0 Logan run that bridged the third and fourth quarters and gave the...
PORTALES — Once Portales High’s boys picked up the pace on defense, it helped their offense. Unfortunately for the Rams, it was just too little, too late on Saturday night. Trailing by 12 points with less than four minutes to go, the Rams rallied to pull even with Andrews in the finale of the three-day Portales Shootout at the Ram Athletic Center. But the Mustangs converted 2-of-4 free throws in the final 30 seconds, and that was just enough to hold on for a 54-52 victory after a desperation 3-pointer by PHS was off the mar...

TEXICO - Logan DeVaney is probably known a bit more for his football prowess than his basketball skills. Still, as one of a handful of seniors on the Melrose boys basketball team, he has a sense of when to try to take over a game. DeVaney converted 8-of-10 free throws, missing only his first and last tries, and delivered the first 3-point basket of his high school career on Friday night as the Buffaloes turned back Texico 50-46 in the championship semifinals of the EPAC boys...

Portales doubled up Tahoka in each of the first two stanzas and led 38-19 at halftime. “We t...
PORTALES - When they get to the New Mexico portion of their schedule early next month, Portales High's girls should feel pretty well-tested. They faced defending Texas Class 3A champion Brownfield on Monday and played tough against the Lady Cubs, who returned all five starters. In the end, though, Brownfield posted a 46-39 win at the Ram Athletic Center. "They're good," Lady Rams coach Wade Fraze said. "We played well tonight, just not well enough (to win)." PHS won't face a...
