    Ron Warnick, Staff writer|Updated Oct 16, 2021

RAGLAND - On the edge of the caprock, a father and his teenage son built a makeshift set of goalposts that doubled as a pasture gate behind the village's general store. It was here the boy, Lewis Reagan, practiced his placekicking for the Tucumcari Rattlers football team. Those practices paid off when, as a senior, he kicked a state-record 58-yard field goal - one of three that split the uprights that night - during a 22-20 upset victory on Oct. 23, 1981, over Lovington. Nearl...

  • Opinion: Aptitudes should be acknowledged

    Rich Lowry, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 16, 2021

Gifted students have to check their privilege and get over themselves. It doesn’t matter whether they are minorities. It doesn’t matter whether they were brought to the United States as children. It doesn’t matter how poor their families may be. It doesn’t matter if they have inspiring personal stories. It doesn’t matter how hard they work. No, the very fact that they are getting accommodated in classrooms and programs that don’t necessarily represent the demographic...

I hit the newspaper archives for both the Portales News-Tribune and the Clovis News-Journal for a peek at Homecoming from a half century ago. Eastern’s 1971 Homecoming took place on Nov. 12-13, and was attended by a “near record crowd,” according to the News-Journal, although no specific numbe...
