Avid coffee fiends rejoice. A new Starbucks drive-in java shop has just popped up on the north side of Clovis to help feed your insatiable thirst for the energizing brown liquid. The new standalone Starbucks location opened Monday on Prince Street, just north of Walmart. Staff visited a few local businesses the previous Friday to hand out free coffee. The new location has a drive through and interior dining area and plans to be open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., 365 days a year....

I don’t get out to Tucumcari as much as I would like. Nearly every time I’ve been there, it was for a work related reason, and we have staff in Tucumcari far more competent than me to handle Quay County news. But I have good memories of the time I was interim managing editor there for four months while we searched for a long-term editor. The Rattler basketball team made the state tournament for the first time in more than a decade, the police chief wore his Atlanta Braves gear on casual Fridays and the Blake’s Lotab...
PORTALES - Landall Goolsby loves movies. The idea that he'll no longer own a business that rents them is difficult regardless of the words he chooses to define it. "We're retiring the Box Office," Goolsby said Monday. "That sounds more fun. It just gets to a point where you get exhausted. We're not afraid of hard work, but it just got harder." And so, the Portales landmark known as Landall's Box Office begins its last days, with a closing date of June 19. It's been part of...
Portales' first skyscraper - in my lifetime known as the Plains Hotel and the Portales Inn, but sadly empty since the 1990s - recently received an extensive renovation. It has reopened as the Best Western Plus Portales Inn at 223 W. Second St. We're all invited to a grand opening celebration from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday hosted by the Roosevelt County Community Development Corporation and Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce. With all due respect, they'll have trouble...
CLOVIS — For the third time in 15 days, the Clovis City Commission created another place to grab a beer. For the third time, it passed 7-1. The commission granted a beer and wine license to Red Door Brewery at 120 Maple St., inside Mainline Bowl. The commission also granted a small brewer off-site location license for on-premises consumption only. Matt Biggs, owner of Red Door, was the only person to speak during the public hearings for either request. The site in question is more than 1,000 feet from any church or school, a...
Most of eastern New Mexico's NFL rooting interest was eliminated a few weeks ago in the second round of the playoffs when the Dallas Cowboys lost to the Los Angeles Rams. But when the Super Bowl between the Rams and the New England Patriots kicks off tonight, Dennis Maes of Clovis and Zac Harmon of Portales will be rooting for their favorite football team since childhood. Maes, 28, is a Rams fan. Born and raised in Clovis, Maes told The News on Friday that he probably would...
The following are available for checkout at: Clovis-Carver Public Library “Disrupters” by Patti Fletcher imagines a business world where women throw out the old playbook and start making their own rules. With exciting insights and uplifting stories, Fletcher reveals the keys you need to achieve your own version of success: choose career and family, get out of your head, use what you've got, thrive in the tribe, lead like a woman and open the door for someone else. “Blood Moon” by John Sedgwick illuminates the true sweepin...
Occasionally the stars align in eastern New Mexico to make for a perfectly quirky evening. That happens Thursday. Habitat for Humanity of Roosevelt and Curry counties is hosting its annual fundraising meal, and the Eastern New Mexico University Department of Theater and Digital Film-Making opens a comical revue of Shakespeare’s works for the first of five local performances. Poor William Shakespeare probably never got to try a jalapeno bratwurst. More’s the pity. For...

On this date ... 1965: Heavy rains had pounded the region in recent days. The Otho Smith farm in Quay County recorded 5 inches of moisture the past two days, the Tucumcari Daily News reported. Conchas Lake levels had climbed almost a quarter-foot in 24 hours, to an elevation of 4,201 feet. 1957: Clovis native Kay Green, 16, was crowned the 1957 National High School Rodeo Queen. It was her first national title and followed her winning the State High School Rodeo Queen title in Santa Rosa the previous week. She competed...
Onion rings did me in. Sitting in a local eatery, I skimmed over onion rings on the menu, and flashed to my dad. Cue the waterworks. I am not sure which was more difficult, trying to keep the tears in or letting my breath out. As I sat in the middle of my public struggle, I remembered a trip my dad and I took to Ruidoso. We had traveled there for a presbytery gathering, and had stopped in one of his favorite places for lunch. As I looked through the menu, my dad said we had...
It begins with a dab of mud in a discreet corner, easily passed by without drawing attention, yet over the course of a few days, the mud slowly builds upon itself and takes shape, eventually protruding from the wall like a naturally sculpted sconce. Along with the growing mud pile in the corner, from dawn to dusk the yard becomes stage to an ongoing dance of swooping arrow-shaped shadows that dive, climb, bank and swoop like miniature fighter jets. Congratulations, you are...
I might have told you before that I ate a lot of chicken growing up. That would be fried chicken. We ate chicken at least a couple days a week, usually at dinner — that’s the noon meal if you grew up in the time and place I did. I’m not sure how my mother found the time and energy to cut up and fry a chicken at noon that often. Sometimes she even packed it up and hauled it out to the field with a gallon jug of iced tea. We eventually quit getting homemade fried chicken very...
The subject of English language arts in middle school is not generally a topic which excites or tantalizes the average individual. However, when packaged creatively by an innovative teacher, it can be game changing. Bethanie Baker is an English teacher at Yucca Middle School who has set up “Book Tastings” in her classroom. Dropping by her classroom, the first thing I noticed was the sign, “Welcome to Baker’s Book Café.” Student desks were grouped into fours, facing each other...
ARLINGTON, Texas — One former Wildcat has gone from cooking for his friends in his Clovis home to cooking for the likes of George W. Bush, Matthew McConaughey and Nolan Ryan. Clovis High graduate Derek Brewster is the sous chef for the Capital One Club, the high-end, buffet-style restaurant for season-ticket holders located right behind home plate at Globe Life Park, the home of the Texas Rangers. As sous chef Brewster is in charge of setting the menu for the buffet enjoyed b... Full story
Little bearded men in top hats and stockings, shamrocks, an over-abundance of green and painful pinches in its absence — St. Patrick’s Day is one of those holidays saturated with symbolism and tradition, however one character tied to the holiday that rarely receives mention is snakes. This Saturday, behind all the green menu offerings at restaurants, shamrock decals in windows, poorly executed Irish brogues and leprechaun references, is a commemoration of the acc...
On this date ... 1988: New Mexico Gov. Garrey Carruthers declared Portales to be the state capital for the day, and set up shop in the Portales Inn to host a breakfast where he called the recently completed legislative session one of the most productive in history. He then set off on an ambitious schedule for the day that included a visit with the New Mexico Peanut Growers Association, a tour of the ethanol plant, addresses to students at Eastern New Mexico University and...
I’m pretty sure the first time I ever ate out anywhere that wasn’t a drive-in or a truck stop it was enchiladas at El Monterrey in Clovis. We didn’t have too many fancy restaurants in Portales when I was growing up but we had a lot of drive-ins and two truck stops. I like all kinds of Mexican food but I especially love enchiladas. The cheesy, warm goodness is comfort food for those of us in this part of the world. There are lots of ways to make them and I like eating them...
