Confucius said, "No matter how busy you may think you are, you must find time for reading or surrender yourself to self-chosen ignorance." If reading was so highly valued 25 hundred years ago, it's hardly surprising that reading is even more important today. In the Clovis schools we work hard to enrich students' lives with reading by equipping them with the needed skills and resources; not only through teachers in our classrooms, but also through our school libraries, staffed with librarians who nurture readers. In addition...

A Portales sandwich shop saw its busiest day in the past few months Wednesday thanks to customers coming in to beat the record heat. This weekend 100 bird-lovers will flock to Milnesand from seven states and Canada to participate in the 11th High Plains Prairie Chicken Festival, highlighted by treks to the leks (breeding grounds) of our native lesser prairie chickens. Visitors are treated to the grouse equivalent of a junior high dance, with the male birds pulling out all the stops to impress the girls in a most beguiling courting... Full story

I think one of the reasons I love Westerns of both the big screen and television variety is that they're so predictable and loaded with clichés. My wife in particular is a fan of the TV Westerns and lately we've watched a number of episodes of "The Virginian," "Wagon Train," "The Big Valley" "Gunsmoke" and "Rawhide" The one we've watched lately that really touched home with me though was "Laredo." As we were watching "Laredo" the inevitable happened and the bad guys got the drop on Reese. I immediately told my wife that... Full story

When I was an elementary school kid at Dora, we had two locations where we could spend our "store money" each week. Our parents could get a full service gasoline fill-up at stations on each end of the village. The cafe was open most days for hamburgers and fries. If Wilcher's Farm Store didn't have the part you needed, you probably didn't really need it. Only a few decades later, most of those places are boarded up, and fuel comes from an unmanned pump. But much to the delight of those of us who frequent Dora, the general sto...
People haven’t started making resolutions just yet... possibly because they’re too busy enjoying the things they’re going to resolve to not do in 2012. That’s certainly been the case if people are resolving not to get offended so easily. They’re doing plenty of it right now on some pretty trivial things. • Last Wednesday was Dec. 7, 2011 — the 70th anniversary of Japanese attacks on Pearl Harbor. The Sidwell Friends school where Malia and Sasha Obama attend served a lunch that day including teriyaki chicken,...
Portales restaurant owners should decide what’s best for their restaurants. Not the mayor. Not the city council. Not a preacher. Not anyone else. That seems pretty basic to freedom lovers: Run your business as you see fit. But the law doesn’t allow for that common-sense interpretation. So Portales is holding an election Tuesday to see where a majority of those who vote stand on individual rights vs. majority rule. Don’t be fooled by the smokescreen claims this is a referendum on alcohol consumption, or economic devel...
