  • Food provider to be contracted for golf course

    Kevin Wilson

The Clovis City Commission approved a stopgap measure Thursday to avoid hitting into rough territory with the Colonial Park Golf Course. By a 6-0 vote, the commission allowed golf pro Charlie Maciel to contract a food provider for the 18-hole course purchased until the course is taken over May 1, 2012, by a still-undetermined provider through a request for proposal process. The request also allows the parks and recreation department to rent the former country club’s ballroom until that date. Commissioner Randy Crowder a...

  • Education column: Cafeteria staff deserves appreciation

What’s cookin’ at the Clovis Municipal Schools? Lots of breakfasts and lunches. Funny how school meals are one of those things we tend to take for granted. Around the time of World War I (1914-1917) school lunches began to be served to children in many of our larger cities as “nutrition scientists” started looking at the overall welfare of children in schools. The School Lunch Committee of the Home and School League in Philadelphia provided a weekly menu of lunches, such as “baked beans and roll for 5 cents; cocoa or milk f... Full story

  • Frumpy Middle-Aged Mom: When I am named ruler of the Earth ...

    Marla Jo Fisher

I am planning to run for Supreme Ruler of Earth, as soon as I get a spare minute. In case you don't know, the Supreme Ruler gets to do whatever she wants and make the rules for everyone else. Everyone kisses your backside and laughs at your jokes. Sort of like running a movie studio or being a CEO. I'm already starting to compile my list of people who would be exiled permanently from Earth after I take over. We could use one of those retired space shuttles to ship them off to a galaxy far, far away. Or maybe just send them...

  • Times of drought remind us to be thankful for better days

    Curtis Shelburne

With all of my heart, I hope that T-shirts emblazoned with that slogan are soon printed and available. At this point, though, one wonders if they ever will be. I hate to whine. Well, that’s probably not strictly true. Most whiners whine because they enjoy it, and while they’re doing it, they don’t have to do anything else—say, something constructive—but I digress as I whine. Back to the topic at hand . . . It’s less fun whining about the drought when I realize that...

  • Military mama: There is no ‘us vs. them’

I always try to make the best of each situation wherever I am in life, because, quite frankly, it’s a choice to enjoy myself or not. I would like to take a moment to get a little serious about the amount of complaining that is occurring about this particular duty station. We live in a rural community. It is unfortunate that the commute to what would be considered a large city is significant. However, no amount of whining will physically relocate an entire city. Lately, I have seen a great deal of conflict arise between the ... Full story

  • Never found a pie I didn’t like

Pie could very well be one of the best things in this life. Three layers in sweet harmony —crust, filling and topping. My mouth waters just writing about pie. I don’t know if I can name a favorite kind of pie because I can’t really remember a pie I didn’t like. It was encounters with two different coconut cream pies this past week that set me off. I bought one of them on sale at the grocery store bakery and relished every sticky slice. No meringue on this pie, just lots of whipped cream and coconut sprinkles. Later... Full story

  • Less incentives for troops this year

The fiscal 2012 defense budget taking shape in Congress could have the fewest significant initiatives for military personnel, retirees and their families in a generation. Blame the ballooning debt crisis, which has left Republicans and Democrats alike looking for ways to curb federal spending, including for defense. And credit a long list of pay and benefits gains over the last decade, which if detailed here could fill up the rest of this column. This year, however, could mark the clear start of a more austere era for militar...
