    Liliana Castillo

A bill that would change the way student success is measured in New Mexico’s schools is headed to state legislators this session. Bill sponsor Rep. Dennis Roch, an assistant superintendent with Texico schools, said under the bill, House Bill 355, each school in the state would be rated by a letter grade, A, B, C, D or F. Roch said the bill would provide a more accurate representation of student achievement than No Child Left Behind’s Adequate Yearly Progress pass or fail rating. With AYP, a school can be identified as a fai... Full story

  • Grant McGee: Manners lesson from mom

Grant McGee The Lady of the House and I were having breakfast at a local eatery when I got to thinking about manners; manners in restaurants to be specific. It seems there are some manners everyone follows and others no one cares about. “You know,” I said, “You just don’t hear anyone belch in a restaurant. You know, rip out a big ol’ burp.” “It’s bad manners,” she said without looking up from the menu. “Yeah, but people have bad manners in lots of other aspects of life. Driving, shopping, stuff like that but in restaurants...

  • Grant McGee: Hats take geting used to

Grant McGee I got to thinking about cowboy hats the other day. Well, I should make myself clear; as a long-time resident of The West I know that they’re not “cowboy hats,” they are simply hats. This was shared with me by a real working cowboy from Chaves County, Cowboy Mike. Let me back up and explain. I was a newly arrived radio announcer at a station in Roswell. I was so excited to be in The West I was gushing over the air that I couldn’t wait to get my first pair of cowboy boots and a cowboy hat. That’s when Cowboy Mi...

  • Can't beat catfish

Several years ago I made a commercial for the Catfish Institute. Their office was in Belzoni, Miss. The commercial concluded, “…just write in care of Miz June. That’s B-E-L-Z-O-N-I. You learned to spell Mississippi in grade school!” I have spent most of my life in the mountain west so trout has been my primary fish source. But I come from deep Oklahoma roots and, from my youth, I have been a frequent visitor to my Okie farmer kinfolks. Each one had a pond stocked with bass and catfish. Catfish almost tastes like meat,... Full story

  • Grant McGee: Harmony hard to achieve

Grant McGee “I suppose aggression is the way of the universe,” I said to The Lady of the House last Saturday. We were at a local eatery. She peered over her menu. “What now?” She said. I told her the story about the guy in south Florida who woke up one morning to find his home had become a battleground between two bee swarms. Millions of bees died. “What do you expect, negotiations?” she said. “That one queen bee would tell the other, ‘Oh you were here first, by all means, we’ll fly somewhere else.’” “Well, I mean, why co...
