  • Olympic athletes live up to hype

Freedom New Mexico Every couple of years leading up to the Olympics, NBC cranks up the hype machine and inundates us with imagery and stories of athletes it deems are either talented enough or telegenic enough — and in some cases, both — to serve as bait to lure passive sports fans to tune in to the network’s coverage of the Games. To be fair, NBC is not alone in this, as corporate sponsors do their part to promote their athlete spokesmen and women, and themselves. Sometimes it works (U.S. speed skater Apolo A... Full story

  • Education column: French lesson provided splash of culture

Being raised by a wonderful southern cook, I learned early in life to enjoy eating. Add to that, being raised in a Baptist Church where their motto seemed to be “Food, Fun, and Fellowship!”, my favorite meal is the potluck. However, I attended a potluck the other day that was like none I have ever had before. It all started with an invitation from Madame Jennifer Kelley, the French teacher at Clovis High School. Her French class was completing their section for food and eating out. She invited me to join them for the com...

  • Holiday season an exhausting time

I’ve known since last January that Christmas would be Dec. 25. So why can’t I prepare ahead of time? Earlier this month it occurred to me I probably should do something about a tree, so I went to the local garden store. They had a gazillion trees, all set up in pots of water and smelling really good. My daughter and I picked one out, and the guy loaded it in my vehicle. Did I need a stand for it, he wanted to know? I said, no, I was sure I had one. At home we searched the garage — and found a stand. It’s a good one....

Freedom New Mexico If the pilgrims and Wampanoag Indians, who were present at the original Thanksgiving feast, somehow were transported to modern times to take part in the holiday as we know it today, even they would wonder why we have to suffer through another Detroit Lions football game. Thankfully, since NFL announcer and video game huckster John Madden has retired from television, we would not have to explain the caloric nightmare that is the “turducken” — a chicken stuffed inside a duck, which is then stuffed into...
