  • Having fun with hypotheticals

    Kevin Wilson

In his pop-culture book, “Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs,” Chuck Klosterman has a series of hypothetical questions that makes you consider your world (i.e. If cats could read, would they find Garfield to be an insulting caricature?), and perhaps yourself. I've been dabbling in hypotheticals myself, and here are some questions Professor Wilson would ask in his class: 1. There is a restaurant you frequent very often. You're on a first-name basis with the staff, there’s not a single menu item you dislike. Service is fast and it’s...

  • ‘Stay-cation’ my kind of vacation

The Lady of the House and I ran into Clovis City/Curry County Commissioner Bobby Sandoval and his wife at a local eatery last Sunday morning. “We’re just back from an Alaskan cruise,” he said. He was grinning from ear to ear. He had the glow of someone refreshed and rejuvenated. “I caught a salmon. It was a dream come true,” he said. “Well, that’s pretty cool,” I said to The Lady of the House as I looked over the menu. “Yeah,” she said. “An Alaskan cruise. I’d like that.” “Hey, it’s the Summer Solstice next weekend. It’s o...

  • Fishing provided memories and supper

Some of my best memories revolve around fishing. Deep-sea fishing is fun. Trolling in a boat on a big lake is, too. Still, my favorite kind of fishing is sneaking up on trout in a mountain stream or casting a fly or lure in a small lake among pine trees and oak brush, trying for trout or bass. We purists complain about suckers and carp getting on our hooks, but we’ve gotta admit those so-called trash fish sometimes keep us from getting skunked, a fate worse than having to walk home. Both my parents were superb fishermen, a...

  • Restaurants pulling tomatoes off menu

    Kevin Wilson

New Mexico residents aren’t seeing red. Since food establishments pulled tomatoes due to Salmonella risks on Friday, local restaurants are noticing a visual impact on food, but not much else. “Nobody’s really said anything about it,” said Misty Baca, a store manager at Clovis’ Mabry Street Dairy Queen. “We have signs on our doors saying why we’re not carrying tomatoes.” The request from the New Mexico Environment targets raw red plum, red Roma, or round red tomatoes. They are believed to be linked to as many as 55 cases of...

  • Chefs do battle in kitchen

    Helena Rodriguez

Reality TV came to Eastern New Mexico University on Thursday night in the form of an Iron Chef competition. It was a survival of the fittest — in the kitchen, that is. Six teams, made up mostly of Family and Consumer Science majors from around the state, had to endure a chef’s worst nightmare of a challenge. They had to create an impressive menu with ingredients assigned to them at random, mystery ingredients which they learned about only minutes before having to cook, then present the food to a panel of judges. ...

  • Businesses feeling money crunch

    Kevin Wilson

The seats aren’t quite as full as they used to be at Cattle Baron. “I’m seeing it’s going to stay the same,” general manager Nick Bara said. “Kind of mediocre.” The steakhouse, a staple of Portales, averaged about $7,500 on a good Friday night a year ago. Now it pulls about $1,000 less — a drop of about 72 patrons, assuming the average $14 tab Bara esimated. It’s a situation felt by similar businesses across the country, as a credit crunch and higher fuel prices have Americans finding ways to survive. A CNNMoney survey... Full story

The Old Farmer’s Almanac reports we’ll see our first full moon of 2008 tonight. Clovis’ Ardyth Elms is convinced the full moon has some kind of mystical power. “I worked in a mental hospital for the criminally insane for 23 years and, yes, it really affects people,” she wrote in an e-mail. “I think if the person is also mentally ill, it seems to affect them more than the average person. Ask any policeman and he/she will tell you the same thing. I don’t know why, but it does.” Clovis’ Gerald Majewski reports he had a memorabl...
