I'll bet a wishbone that you have seen and/or handled a turkey this week. The National Turkey Foundation says that 88 percent of us Americans will tuck into a portion of that iconic bird as our main course on Thanksgiving Day. But don't tell that to my new friend Buddy ... Buddy the turkey, that is. Buddy will not be on the table tomorrow - or at least not roasted and on a platter, thank you very much. His owner, Chock Banister of Portales, wouldn't think of it. On the...

I saw a picture of Portales’ old La Hacienda Restaurant recently, and it got me to thinking about some of our family’s favorite eating spots that are long gone. La Hacienda, for those who don’t remember, was originally on North Avenue K in Portales. When we have birthdays in my family, it’s always been tradition for the birthday person to get to pick the menu and/or eating spot for the main meal. I picked La Hacienda for my 15th birthday supper, not only to celebrate my arriva...
With Homecoming activities in full swing this week at Eastern New Mexico University, it’s only natural (at least, for me) to do some reminiscing about a long ago gathering of Greyhounds. I hit the newspaper archives for both the Portales News-Tribune and the Clovis News-Journal for a peek at Homecoming from a half century ago. Eastern’s 1971 Homecoming took place on Nov. 12-13, and was attended by a “near record crowd,” according to the News-Journal, although no specific numbe...
On this date ... 1961: Mrs. J.P. Steiner’s second-grade students at Lindsey School in Portales had been introduced to a “good breakfast,” the Portales News-Tribune reported. The students were seated at three tables covered with tablecloths. Two tables had flower centerpieces and a bowl of fruit for decoration. The menu consisted of cantaloupe balls, orange juice, oatmeal, milk and cinnamon toast. “They called this their ‘go, glow, grow’ breakfast,” the newspaper reported. That’s because it “supplies the elements needed f...
CLOVIS — Clovis High will join every other school in Class 5A next year when it adds a boys and girls wrestling program to its sports menu. Erik Zottnick was recently hired by the school to coach the program. It will be his first high school coaching job, although he has been involved with the sport pretty much since age 4. “I’m excited,” Zottnick said. “I believe the community has been wanting this program. I think Clovis is the right place to get one started.” CHS athletic director Lonnie Baca said adding the sport has been...
I never see a printed school menu without being reminded of my own years in the lunch line and cafeteria at the Dora schools. As a species, we humans love to complain. In those long-ago days before cell phones and the internet (also known as the 1960s and 1970s of my youth), one of the only things most of us had to grouse about was school cafeteria food. Our lunch ladies at Dora made that exceedingly hard. Most of our lunch ladies were also school bus drivers. It was a good co...

One of my favorite allegories is the one about the frog in the pot of water, who got used to the slowing rising temperature of a warming pot and ended up boiled to death. In some ways, I feel as if society has been on the menu for quite some time now. But here we are, in 2021, and life is very different from the way it was when I was born in 1961. It all happened incrementally, while very few of us noticed that the temperature was rising in the societal pot. The most obvious example is abortion. Who would have thought 60...
When I was a little kid, and before I had enough sense to avoid carnivals, I eagerly boarded a ride one year at the Roosevelt County Fair. I don’t remember the name of the ride, but I do remember that four or five of us were seated in a pod. Those pods hung precariously on ends of long arms that hurtled us in circles as the ride spun. They also twisted independently, flinging us from side to side. It took only seconds to realize that stepping foot into that pod had been a t...

Much remains uncertain for the upcoming ski season in New Mexico. But ski resort owners all know one thing: They want to ride. "It's a different year than most," said Michael Adams with Ski Cloudcroft. "Gov. (Michelle Lujan) Grisham hasn't addressed this year yet and what restrictions there will be. We're planning for a bunch of scenarios right now, but what we are anticipating is 50 percent capacity and social distancing. We've watched a lot of videos on how to keep your...
CLOVIS — Less than a week after it halted to-go service, the Curry Resident Senior Meal Association will resume operations Monday. The association halted operations Monday night, following a positive COVID-19 test for one of its employees. Director Ashley White said the employee had no interaction with members of the public, but the closure was made out of an abundance of caution. White told The News on Saturday the positive employee was asymptomatic and should be cleared to work Monday. The employee was last on the p...

PORTALES - On the surface, the Do Drop In pretty much looks the same in August as it did before the COVID-19 pandemic hit five months before. The menu board still features various sandwiches, including the Green Monster, and a quippy sign noting unsupervised children will be given espresso and a puppy. But plenty is noticeably different at the downtown Portales eatery that's been part of the community for nearly 20 years - nearly half of it under the ownership of the Mountjoy...

With our restaurant selections lately restricted to carryout, dining in Portales has become a lot like it used to be when I was growing up — except for the prices. I can maybe remember a 35-cent burger growing up but mostly I would say they were 50 to 80 cents back then. The only sit-down dining available was often at the two truck stops and the drug stores with fountain and grill service. The chain burger joints hadn’t come to town for the most part. I had heard of McD...
As New Mexico and states around the country gradually re-open, there’s been much talk of a “new normal.” People certainly miss the old normal, but that may be gone, if not forever, then at least for the foreseeable future. Plains Regional Medical Center Administrator Drew Dostal sees changes in routine medical visits that may last a while. “That’s a broad subject,” Dostal said. “I’m not sure that going forward it’ll be routine in the sense of what it used to look like. It was very clinical based. We really want to keep safe...
