With our restaurant selections lately restricted to carryout, dining in Portales has become a lot like it used to be when I was growing up — except for the prices. I can maybe remember a 35-cent burger growing up but mostly I would say they were 50 to 80 cents back then. The only sit-down dining available was often at the two truck stops and the drug stores with fountain and grill service. The chain burger joints hadn’t come to town for the most part. I had heard of McD...
CLOVIS -- Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive for COVID-19 on March 11, and the NBA decided four minutes later to suspend its season, effective after ongoing games concluded. The next day, the state of New Mexico announced public schools would be closed for three weeks. The day after that, superintendents across the state had to have plans in to the Public Education Department over how they’d operate facilities and still provide some necessary functions to kids during the closure. That left little for Clovis s... Full story

RUIDOSO — The next year at Eastern New Mexico University will be Jeff Elwell’s last. Elwell, the president of the Portales campus and chancellor for the university’s three-campus system, withdrew his request for a contract extension during Friday’s Board of Regents meeting at the ENMU-Ruidoso campus. Elwell plans to serve in his current roles no later than June 30, 2021. Elwell, who started as ENMU’s 11th president in July 2017, said he was unsure if he would simply retire, find a teaching position, be an administr...

I collect historical tidbits that interest me from area newspapers. Here are a few from Januarys past: • Jan. 7, 1941: “Bales and bales of hay” had been moved into Clovis’ Armory for members of two National Guard units staying there. “The hay isn’t for horses, either — for there are no more since the old 111th Cavalry unit here was converted into an anti-aircraft unit of the 200th Coast Artillery,” the Clovis News-Journal reported. The hay was to “stuff the soldiers’ bed packs with,” CN-J reported. • Jan. 11, 1955: Seven gr...

President Donald Trump has long maintained the FBI investigation of former Trump policy adviser Carter Page was a politically motivated witch hunt. Whether you agree or disagree, the numerous, serious and potentially systemic failures in the FBI investigation have got to shake your confidence in the system. Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz released his 400-plus page report on the investigation this month and testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee. He found the opening by the FBI of the...

Area residents have another chance to taste some local history. The Guadalajara Mexican restaurant is back after 12 years. Once a local staple, the restaurant closed in 2007 after nearly 70 years in business. "I grew up here and I've been around here my whole life," owner Michael Mendoza said. "My granddad taught me how to cook in the 1980s and after he passed my mother ran it while I cooked for her. She was the boss but retired in 1998 and my wife and I ran it until 2007."...

Here are a few signs that your cataracts might be progressing faster than you thought. 1. You’ve increased the font size on your computer and mobile devices so much you never get a full sentence on one line. 2. Road signs fly past before you can read them. Either the car is getting faster or reading has become more difficult. 3. You actually get into the wrong vehicle. Granted it was same make and model and nearly the same color but the potpourri air freshener was the g...
Sometimes it’s hard to remember to be thankful for life’s little blessings. Recently I was reminded to be grateful I don’t live in California. My electricity went out for a little while a few days ago, but the power company was on the ball and power was restored in no time; long before it could have become inconvenient for anyone but the least prepared among us. By contrast, the electric utility in California plans to shut off power to hundreds of thousands of its payin...
CLOVIS — Power has been restored to about 3,400 Xcel Energy customers in west Clovis. The power went out about 9:15 a.m. Thursday and was out until about 10:45 a.m. Those impacted included 11 public schools, including Clovis High. School officials said students remained in class during the outage. A school news release said district officials “closely monitored the situation,” and the primary concern was related to food preparation. “Student Nutrition worked in collaboration with the New Mexico Department of Health to moni... Voters in Curry and Roosevelt counties are being asked whether alcohol sales should be permitted in the unincorporated areas of the counties. Let’s hope they approve. Yes votes don’t mean alcohol is good. Yes votes mean private business owners get to decide what’s best for their businesses. And we might even see a few more private businesses pop up around the region. The language on the Nov. 5 ballots will be the same in both counties: • Do residents wish to allow the sale, service and consumption of alcoholic beverag...
