Fire caused extensive damage to an abandoned home near Sixth and Prince streets in Clovis on Sunday night. Firefighters responded to the scene about 6:15 p.m. Flames were visible coming from the roof of the structure along with heavy smoke, which could be seen for blocks. A 78-year-old Clovis woman was shot to death Wednesday night as she answered her front door about 7 p.m. in the 1300 block of Traver Street, police said. Police identified the victim as Virginia Montoya. She suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest and died at Plains Regional Medical Center, police said. The shooting was reported by the victim's 80-year-old husband. The child, who lived at 205 Cameo, was suffering from polio, doctors said. She’d been admitted over the weekend with severe weakness in her arms and legs and was confined to bed. The Department of the Air Force has awarded a nearly $150,000 contract to sample soil below a fire training pond for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, according to a news release from Cannon Air Force.
