the Staff of The News|Updated Sep 28, 2024

West Texas A&M spoiled the Lone Star Conference opener for the Eastern New Mexico University women's soccer team on Wednesday, handing the Greyhounds a 2-0 loss at Steve Loy Family Foundation Field. ENMU (1-3-1, 0-1 LSC) took a season-best 17 shots overall, with five on goal for the second-most in a match this season, but the Greyhounds were unable to penetrate WT senior goalkeeper Reagan Heelan and the Lady Buffs' defense despite having a number of quality chances to score....

  • Lady Cats fall to Goddard in five sets

the Staff of The News|Updated Sep 28, 2024

ROSWELL – Clovis High’s volleyball team seemed on its way to victory Tuesday night before things came a bit unraveled. Roswell Goddard roared from behind to take a 23-25, 20-25, 25-20, 25-7, 15-7 victory over the Lady Wildcats. “We played incredible in Games 1 and 2,” CHS coach Cristy Hill said. “We missed 11 serves in Game 1, and we still won.” Junior outside hitter Ashlynn Evans collected 18 kills, seven digs, two blocks and two aces for Clovis (5-4). “Ashlynn was getting balls down every time,” Hill said. “Maybe she got...

  • Cavemen keep Cats reeling with 56-8 triumph

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 28, 2024

Even though Clovis High's football team has struggled mightily this season, Carlsbad coach Cale Sanders wasn't about to take anything for granted on Friday night. After all, the Wildcats were also struggling last year at this time before ambushing the Cavemen 33-23 at Leon Williams Stadium, eventually winning a district title and earning Class 6A state playoff berth. Not this time, though. Senior quarterback Kaden Perez threw for six touchdowns and ran for another, and Carlsba...

  • Rams turn back Jaguars

Matt Weiner, The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 28, 2024

A cacophony of smashing pads and cheering fans flowed through Steven Loy Family Foundation Stadium on Friday night, as youngsters from Valencia High School and Portales High School duked it out in the fourth quarter of a meaningful district melee. Then in the fourth quarter, up by one possession, PHS quarterback Tommy Lopez pump-faked a screen pass, found Kaidyn Cordova streaking up the sideline and ripped a deep ball into the pitch-black sky. Time froze. The cacophony...

  • Vega, Friona deal setbacks to Lady Rams

the Staff of The News|Updated Sep 28, 2024

FRIONA – Suffice it to say, it was a long day for Portales High’s volleyball team on Tuesday. Playing in what was essentially a triangular, the Lady Rams had to wait around for Vega and Friona to complete a five-set marathon, won by the host Squaws. They then went five sets before losing to the Lady Longhorns 26-24, 27-25, 23-25, 19-25, 15-8. In the finale, Friona (23-6) notches a 25-13, 25-23, 25-22 win over PHS. Friona is ranked 30th out of 175 Class 3A schools in Texas, while Vega (24-5) is 17th out of nearly 150 Class 2A...

  • Commentary: Style not necessary in a rock fight

Jon Mark Beilue, Sports columnist|Updated Sep 24, 2024

Texas Tech is not yet, and may never be, a football program where style points in a win are required. Red Raider fans should never be tempted to dismiss a Big 12 victory no matter if at times it seems disjointed. If it were style that fans were looking for, they should have gone to Raider Alley a few hours before Saturday afternoon’s game as Shaquille O’Neal, with the stage name of the Big Diesel, was spinning music for a mosh pit of revelers. As for the actual game, when Ari...

  • Lady Coyotes topple PHS in four sets

the Staff of The News|Updated Sep 24, 2024

ROSWELL – Roswell High rallied from a one-set deficit on Monday night for a 19-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-16 win over Portales High. PHS coach Bailey Greenwalt was disappointed her team couldn’t build off its quick start. The Lady Coyotes (10-1) finally took control with a dominant fourth set. “We played some really good volleyball at times, but we had too many errors,” she said. “It was a good, dominant first set. We led in the second set (16-10), and the third set was back and forth.” Junior middle hitter Skyler Massey post...

  • ENMU women break into win column 1-0

the Staff of The News|Updated Sep 24, 2024

Gaia Chies scored early, and the Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team made it stand up on Sunday for a 1-0 victory over Colorado Christian at Steve Loy Family Foundation Stadium, the Greyhounds’ first win of the season. Chies, a junior midfielder from Italy, took a pass from senior midfielder Meghann Wingsutton and curled the ball past Cougars goalkeeper Alana Lopp and into the top corner of the net with just over 7 ½ minutes gone – one of just two shots on goal for the Hounds in the match. Meantime, the Cougar...

  • Cats notch victory over Del Norte

the Staff of The News|Updated Sep 24, 2024

ALBUQUERQUE – Clovis High’s boys kept winning on Saturday, but veteran CHS coach Greg Trujillo is a bit concerned with District 4-5A competition about ready to begin. Senior forward Ihab Mesbah had two goals and an assist and junior forward/midfielder Julien Salinas delivered a pair of assists as the Wildcats topped Del Norte 4-2, improving to 10-2 for the season with their sixth consecutive victory. “It was a sloppy game on our part,” Trujillo said. “We didn’t take care of the ball and retain possession. “We couldn’t conn...

  • Rams look for bounce-back win against Jaguars

the Staff of The News|Updated Sep 24, 2024

Portales High’s football team has developed a bit of a rivalry against Los Lunas-based Valencia over the past few years. Now the teams find themselves in the same district as they prepare for Friday’s 7 p.m. clash at Eastern New Mexico University’s Steve Loy Family Foundation Stadium. It’s the fourth year in a row the teams have played. After splitting a pair of tightly contested games the first two seasons, the Rams ran away to a 51-0 victory in 2023. PHS coach Jaime Ramirez doesn’t expect a repeat of that on Friday ni...

  • Mustangs take 36-15 victory over ENMU

the Staff of The News|Updated Sep 24, 2024

Rain and lightning delays dragged out Saturday's Lone Star Conference football game between Eastern New Mexico University and Midwestern State at Steve Loy Family Foundation Stadium. When play resumed, the Mustangs rained on ENMU's parade. Midwestern jumped out to a 16-0 lead in the second quarter and rode a 5-for-5 field goal performance from senior kicker Joseph Carlson to a 36-15 victory over the Greyhounds. The 6 p.m. start of the match was delayed by lightning for about...

  • Lady Cats trounce Lovington

    Dave Wagner|Updated Sep 21, 2024

After enduring a tough five-set loss two nights earlier to Melrose, it took Clovis High's volleyball team a while to get cooking on Thursday night against Lovington at Rock Staubus Gymnasium. Three aces from junior outside hitter Lileigh Oborny, including two to start her service run, did the trick and the Lady Wildcats eventually cruised to a 25-16, 25-10, 25-7 victory over winless Lovington. CHS struggled a bit to put the first set away and led just 10-7 in Game 2 before a...

  • Cats pull away after halftime, beat Rams 5-1

the Staff of The News|Updated Sep 21, 2024

The Clovis High boys soccer team got off to a bit of a slow start, but in the end the Wildcats had too much for Portales High. Four second-half goals gave the Cats firm control in a 5-1 victory on Wednesday at the PHS pitch. The match had been slated for Tuesday, but was pushed back a day due to lightning. Senior forward Anthony Cordova gave the Rams a 1-0 lead early in the contest, but senior forward Ihab Mesbah headed in the equalizer off a corner kick from freshman...

  • Hounds turn back Sul Ross State

the Staff of The News|Updated Sep 21, 2024

Suffice it to say, Eastern New Mexico University’s volleyball team has turned it around against Sul Ross State over the years – and the Greyhounds are glad to now see the Alpine, Texas-based Lobos in the Lone Star Conference. ENMU earned just its second win of the campaign on Friday night, rallying past Sul Ross 21-25, 25-22, 26-24, 25-18 at Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena on the second night of an LSC Volleyball Challenge event. It was the Hounds’ 23rd consecutive win in the series, which dates to the late 1970s. Sul R...

  • Antelopes outlast Steers late

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 21, 2024

FARWELL – Farwell had trouble stopping Abernathy in the first half, then seemed to figure things out. A missed conversion kick helped keep hope alive for the visiting Antelopes, though, and they rallied for two touchdowns in the final three minutes to stun the Steers 42-41. Sophomore quarterback Jagger Wiley's fifth touchdown pass of the night, a 24-yarder to sophomore Dre Minfield with 2:24 remaining, capped a 79-yard, nine play drive and made it 41-35. Then the Steers m...

  • Cibola pulls away from Cats in second half

the Staff of The News|Updated Sep 21, 2024

ALBUQUERQUE – Clovis High’s football team broke its lengthy scoring drought on Thursday night and stayed competitive for much of the game. In the end, the Cibola Cougars were a bit too much and walked away with a 36-12 victory at Nusenda Community Stadium. Coming off losses against three of the better Class 6A teams in the state, the Cats had been outscored 158-0 since tallying a TD and a 2-point conversion on their first drive of the season. But early in the second stanza, the pulled to 7-6 when junior running back John Roy...

ENMU's Shacie Marr, who competes in breakaway roping, barrel racing and goat-tying events, said the event appeals to much of the community. "Especially in Portales ... There's a lot of farmer,...

  • Hounds battle to draw against Riverhawks

the Staff of The News|Updated Sep 17, 2024

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Both teams struck early, but nothing was settled then and nothing was settled the rest of the way on Saturday as Eastern New Mexico University played former Lone Star Conference member Northeastern State to a 1-1 draw in men’s soccer on Saturday. The Riverhawks (0-2-2) broke through in the eighth minute when a goal from junior midfielder Kei Nagakura, his first of the campaign. About 20 minutes later, junior defender Arthur Macri got the equalizer for the Greyhounds (1-1-2), his first goal for ENMU, off...

  • Cats hope bye week helps

the Staff of The News|Updated Sep 17, 2024

After a week off to try to heal their wounds, Clovis High's football team looks to start to get things turned around when the Wildcats play Cibola in a 7 p.m. kickoff on Thursday at Albuquerque's Milne/Wilson Stadium. After three consecutive dominating setbacks to start the campaign, the Cats look to bounce back at the expense of the Cougars (1-3), whose win came in overtime 20-17 at Albuquerque High in the season opener. First-year Clovis coach Stan Hodges is certainly...

  • Angelo picks up first win at Hounds' expense

the Staff of The News|Updated Sep 17, 2024

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Angelo State junior cornerback Andrew Pitts returned a third-quarter interception 36 yards inside the Eastern New Mexico University 10 and the Rams scored three plays later, eventually holding on for a 26-20 win over the Greyhounds in the Lone Star Conference football opener for both teams on Saturday. The game was nip-and-tuck throughout, but the interception by Pitts set up an 8-yard TD pass on third-and-goal from junior quarterback Braeden Fuller to senior running back Hunter Wallis and gave the Rams (...

The Wildcats (8-2) extended their winning streak to four matches, getting goals from sophomore forward/midfielder Damien Navarrette in the first half and senior forward Ihab Mesbah in the second. Assists were credited to junior forward/midfielder Julien Salinas and senior goalkeeper Angel Avila, respectively, the latter on a long clearing pass. “It’s one of the best starts we’ve had in...

  • Portales quarterback navigates ACL tear

Matt Weiner, The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 17, 2024

During Portales High School's halftime homecoming ceremony last Friday night, the Rams public address announcer introduced nominees and read out quotes from each one. Common themes were faith in the Lord, being a good person and virtues of hard work.  But one, which came from Pierce Culpepper – a 6-foot-5 sophomore PHS defensive end – stood out. It was a message to his older brother, Paxton Culpepper, PHS' senior quarterback, about how his season-ending ACL tear was just...
