CLOVIS - With injuries and COVID sidelining three top players, Hobbs' girls turned to their freshmen class on Friday night - four of them started in a District 4-5A clash against Clovis High at Rock Staubus Gym. For a while, it looked like it might be their undoing. The Lady Wildcats rode four first-half 3-pointers from sophomore guard Zarai Lewis to a 29-20 lead at the break. Then the script was flipped. The Lady Eagles outscored Clovis 18-5 in the third period and added a...
BUSHLAND, Texas — Trying to build a wrestling program is a process, and Clovis High’s first-year squads are finding that out. The Wildcats and Lady Wildcats came in third on Friday against well-established Canyon and Bushland programs in a triangular competition. “The girls did phenomenal,” CHS coach Eric Zottneck said. “The guys were just ‘out-strengthed.’ They had eight boys — four for each team — who were state champions.” The boys managed just two forfeit wins against Canyon — eighth-grader Nolan Rodriguez at 126 poun...
SAN ANGELO, Texas — Junior guard Payton Brown led four Angelo State players in double figures with a season-best 20 points on Saturday, and the Rambelles relied on stiff defense to subdue Eastern New Mexico University 78-61 in Lone Star Conference women’s play. The Rambelles (7-10, 4-2 LSC), coming off a stunning 67-63 upset of eighth-ranked Lubbock Christian on Thursday, held the Greyhounds to just 32 percent shooting from the floor, including 2-of-15 from 3-point range. In addition, ENMU (8-7, 4-5), which had a thr...
ALBUQUERQUE — Saturday’s Tom Casey Memorial Invite swim meet, hosted by Albuquerque Academy, wasn’t exactly what Clovis High co-coach Gordy Westerberg had in mind. In normal meets, he said, teams may have two or three entries in a relay and four individuals per event. This meet restricted teams to one relay and two individuals per event. “My original plan was to focus on the relays and put kids in one individual race, most likely an ‘off’ race — one they normally don’t get to swim — so there went my plan out the window,...
JAL — Junior Catelyn Breshears and sophomore Kaya New combined for 31 points Monday night as Texico’s girls posted a 48-35 non-district win over Jal. CLOVIS - Wade Fraze saw a strong effort from his Portales High girls squad under challenging circumstances on Saturday night. He wishes it had come with a victory, but the Clovis High Lady Wildcats were determined not to let that happen. Senior guard Yvonne Fuerte hit a running floater from the left of the lane as time expired in overtime to give Clovis a 55-53 victory at Rock Staubus Gym. With a challenging schedule ahead, especially in District 4-5A, it was probably a win...
PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University’s baseball and softball teams have their work cut out trying to climb the ladder in the Lone Star Conference. Both squads kick off the season this weekend, the baseball team with a four-game LSC series at St. Edward’s from Friday through Sunday and the softball team in the RMAC/LSC crossover tournament at Albuquerque on Friday and Saturday. The conference released its preseason polls last week, and they were not kind to the Greyhounds. ENMU was picked for last place in the 13-te...
ROSWELL — Senior guard Teagan Faust gave the Portales High girls a strong all-around effort on Friday night. Faust scored a personal-best 18 points, and added seven rebounds, six steals and two assists while also checking Roswell Goddard’s top offensive player as the Lady Rams opened District 4-4A play with a 55-48 victory. “We’ll like it,” PHS coach Wade Fraze said of the road win. “Goddard is always good, and every game we play against them seems to come down to the end.” Portales (13-4 overall) trailed 17-13 at the quarte...

Fort Sumner (10-3, 3-1) built a 19-12 advantage after one quarter as junior Clay Norman hit four 3-pointers. CCS rallied to lead 33-32 at halftime, then outscored Fort...
CLOVIS - Carlsbad's girls have specialized in holding their opponents to low point totals this season. Tuesday night at The Rock, Clovis High held the Cavegirls in check, but their inability to muster much offense of their own proved costly in a 29-22 loss in the District 4-5A opener for both teams. Neither team was able to muster as much as 10 points in any quarter, but the Cavegirls (18-4 overall) held the Lady Wildcats (13-6) to just two points in the final stanza to seal...

PORTALES — Portales High boys coach Randy McBroom was hopeful his squad could put together a winning streak before the start of District 4-4A play, and the Rams have done it. Playing for only the second time since Jan. 12, the Rams pulled away in the second half to beat Jal 55-46 on Tuesday night at the Ram Athletic Center. It gave PHS (9-8) a four-game winning streak to take into Friday’s district opener at Roswell Goddard. “We’re playing well, getting better every game,” McBroom said. “I really believe our district is...

PORTALES - As the saying goes, live by the 3-pointer, die by it as well. On Saturday afternoon, St. Edward's came in shooting around 34 percent from distance this season. But the Hilltoppers were on fire almost from the start, hitting 11-of-21 3s in the first half and finishing 14-of-34 in an 85-66 Lone Star Conference men's basketball victory over Eastern New Mexico University at Greyhound Arena. "We've been living and dying by the 3," 13th-year Hilltoppers coach Andre Cook...

The men’s 1,600 relay team of junior Iziah Hall, Hurren, junior Devis Cheruiyot and sophomore Japhet Toroi...
LOVINGTON — When you’re in the middle of a tough season, close losses can sting even more than usual. Clovis High’s boys were a minute away from pulling out their fourth win of the campaign on Saturday afternoon, but Lovington — which had gone 1-for-9 from the free throw line to that point — converted 3-of-4 at the end and pulled out a 57-55 victory. The Wildcats (3-17) had the advantage from the foul line for the game, going 13-of-19. They also had the lead for most of the first two-quarters plus, but Lovington (12-5) ou...
ARTESIA - Junior Clayton Hogan won a pair of individual events and also helped two relays to victory as Clovis High's boys claimed the team title in Saturday's Artesia Invitational swimming meet. The Wildcats finished with 144 points to 125 for runnerup Hobbs in the nine-school competition. Meantime, the CHS girls squad collected 93 points, trailing the host Lady Bulldogs (132) and Las Cruces (112). Hogan posted state-qualifying marks of 57.73 seconds in the 100 butterfly and...

PORTALES - Eastern New Mexico University's women weren't exactly clicking on all cylinders on Saturday. Fortunately, their opponents were having even more issues. It's not often you can shoot under 30 percent and win, but the Greyhounds managed to do it in a 62-54 Lone Star Conference victory over St. Edward's at Greyhound Arena. ENMU (7-6, 3-4 LSC) shot just 19-of-70 (27 percent) from the field, including 1-of-12 from 3-point range. But the Hilltoppers couldn't take...
PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University athletic director Paul Weir has announced a multi-year contract extension for football coach Tye Hiatt. The school did not release how long the extension was for, although Hiatt said it was “for more than two years.” Hiatt was named the Hounds’ head coach in April 2021, replacing Kelley Lee. He was coming off a successful stint as ENMU went 4-7, including 1-6 in the Lone Star Conference. Perhaps the team’s top performance of the season came in a 31-24 overtime loss at then-No....
ROSWELL — It was 12 days since the Portales High Rams had played, coming off home wins over Moriarty and Clovis High on back-to-back nights. Coach Randy McBroom was hoping to build on that momentum, but the team had since had a couple of games postponed. On Monday, it looked like the Rams never missed a beat. They cruised to a 65-32 win over New Mexico Military in a game which was to have been played on Friday night, but was moved because of COVID concerns. McBroom preferred to credit his team’s strong play over anything the...
