GRADY – Senior Deakin Ragland returned the opening kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown, and the rout was on as Grady overwhelmed Hondo 61-0 in 6-man play on Saturday afternoon. The Bronchos (3-1) led 40-0 at the quarter and ended the contest against the Eagles (0-3) at halftime on the 50-point rule with three more touchdowns in the second stanza. Sophomore Zander Ciancio threw for three scores and caught a pass for another. His TD tosses, all in the opening segment, covered 32 yards to sophomore Caden Croy, 14 yards to senior C...
Sports, especially now with less than 50 days before the election, is supposed to be a welcome respite from the nonstop name-calling, negativity and outrage by which this presidential election, as usual, is defined. We’ve grown weary or at least numb to the back and forth, though that doesn’t include the confused dogs and cats in Springfield, Ohio. Let me throw in a couple of political buzzwords into college football – “socialism” and “democracy.” Hang on for a minute, and I...
LUBBOCK – Clovis High’s cross country girls put three runners in the top 18 on Saturday and the Lady Wildcats claimed fifth place with 196 points in the 39-team Lubbock Christian Invitational. Meantime, the CHS boys came in 11th out of 46 squads with a score of 326. Canyon ran away with both divisions, finishing with 19 points to 125 for Big Spring (Texas) in boys competition and 21 points to 157 for Hereford on the girls’ side. “We’re just going to keep training,” Clovis cross country coach Liz Ledezma said. “Whatever w...
ALAMOGORDO – Junior forward/midfielder Maria Lujan scored in each half on Saturday as Portales High’s girls claimed third place in a four-team tournament hosted by Alamogordo with a 2-0 victory over Silver. Junior goalkeeper Lissette Gomez collected six saves in the shutout win over the Lady Colts (1-9). “The turf is so hot,” first-year Lady Rams coach Laci Lozoya said of the field conditions at Alamo. “We played extremely well despite the heat.” In the boys’ third-place matchup, New Mexico Military (3-4) jumped on the...

Portales High's volleyball was so close to a sweep on Tuesday night, and yet so far. After winning the first set against Roswell High at the Ram Athletic Center, the Lady Rams had three set points with 24-21 leads in Games 2 and 3, but couldn't hold on. At the end, they were saddled with a 17-25, 28-26, 26-24, 25-19 setback against the Lady Coyotes (5-1). "It was a very tight match," PHS coach Bailey Greenwalt said. "It was a really fun (match). I would say we were the better...
West Texas A&M did all its damage before halftime on Thursday night and the Buffaloes posted a 3-1 men's non-league soccer win in a battle of LSC rivals at Steve Hoy Family Foundation Stadium. The setback completed a season-opening, three-match homestand for the Greyhounds (1-1-1). Neither team seized momentum early, but the Buffs (1-1-1) broke through in the 10th minute when junior forward Gabriel Nevarez found junior defender Zakaria Daaou sprinting down the middle of the...
ROSWELL – For the second time in three nights, the Clovis High girls soccer team found itself not losing, but not winning either. Thursday night, the Lady Wildcats battled Roswell Goddard to a scoreless standoff. They now stand at 3-6-2 for the season. "We had some good plays," CHS girls coach Ray Rodriguez said. "The buildup was there, but the finishing (plays) wasn't. "(On offense,) we shot it right at the goalkeeper. And our shots weren't from very far out." Rodriguez s...
TEXICO – In an early-season matchup of small-school state volleyball powers, Texico had it, lost it and then in the end grabbed it back. Up 2-0 against Class 1A No. 1 Logan on Thursday night, the Class 2A fourth-ranked and defending state champion Lady Wolverines suddenly found themselves in a winner-take-all fifth set before getting it turned around for a 25-17, 27-25, 14-25, 18-25, 15-8 triumph. Senior outside hitter Kinzee Crow delivered eight kills and three aces while s...
MELROSE – Eight-man newcomer Hagerman put together some nice drives on Friday, only to come up empty. On the other hand, Melrose didn't waste any time welcoming the former Class 2A Bobcats to their new level of play. Hagerman finished with a 48-12 advantage in plays from scrimmage, but the Buffaloes (4-0) scored on five of theirs in an overwhelming 52-0 pasting which ended late in the third quarter on a 6-yard run by sophomore Zaiden Saucedo. After running off eight plays a...
"Tommy Lopez, game ball goes to you!" There was a ferocity in Portales High School head coach Jaime Ramirez's voice while delivering the line to a cluster of sweat-soaked Portales High School youngsters, after an exhilarating 21-14 comeback win over West Las Vegas. Sure, Lopez, a 5-foot-9-inch slot receiver-turned-quarterback, had a great game. He totaled two rushing touchdowns and a pick-six – not to mention his pass breakup on a potential game tying touchdown in the g...
The Eastern New Mexico University men's soccer team went toe-to-toe with Fort Lewis on Saturday, playing the 21st-ranked Skyhawks to a 1-1 draw at Steve Loy Family Foundation Stadium. Junior forward Ben Sauerlander put ENMU (1-0-1) in front in the 15th minute, driving a shot past Skyhawks keeper Lucas Martin from the right side off assists from freshman midfielder Teddy McIntire and junior midfielder Kevin Nunez. That held up until the 74th minute, when Skyhawks junior defende...
In a 36-17 victory over Sul Ross State, where his bulldozing blocks helped Eastern New Mexico get to 2-0, 25-year-old offensive lineman Bailey Adair was reminded why he's still playing. It's the feeling of knowing he has something left to give, coupled with the overwhelming feeling of knowing his job at ENMU isn't finished. "I bleed green and silver," said Adair, the only member of the 2019 Greyhound squad that captured the program's first Division II bowl win, after...
LOVINGTON – The Clovis High boys soccer team is off to a fast start this season, mostly at the expense of Lovington. Junior forward/midfielder Julien Salinas scored on a rebound with about five minutes left, and the Wildcats (6-2) held on for their third victory in three tries against Lovington, a 3-2 decision on Saturday. Salinas tapped in a rebound of a shot by senior forward Ihab Mesbah to snap a 2-2 tie and put the Cats into the winner’s circle. Mesbah, meantime, tallied twice in the opening stanza to stake Clovis to a 2...
Buttons on remote controls across West Texas, eastern New Mexico and beyond were being punched late Saturday night. Time for bed or maybe Saturday Night Live. Some of it had to do with the central time zone kickoff of 9 p.m., but most of it had to do with the showing of Texas Tech, which for the second time in two games looked … … What’s the word? Bad? Does that fit? That’s a simple basic word, but in this case works just fine. Bad. These are sobering humbling times for Tec...
While it didn’t result in a win, Portales High football coach Jaime Ramirez had to be encouraged by what he saw in Friday’s 14-7 loss at Bernalillo. Playing shorthanded without senior quarterback Paxton Culpepper and three linemen due to injuries, the Rams (1-2) hung in the game until late against the 3-0 Spartans. “We played great defensively,” Ramirez said. “Offensively, we struggled throughout the night.” West Las Vegas (2-1), which visits the Rams this weekend, should provide another challenge, Ramirez said. “They’re a...
HATCH – Portales High’s soccer girls finished one of the best weeks in program history over the weekend, winning twice to take third place in the eight-team Hatch Valley Invitational. Portales used a 4-0 second-half charge to thump the host Lady Bears 6-2 in Friday quarterfinal. PHS (3-3) then lost to Santa Teresa 4-0 in Saturday’s semifinals before taking out Chaparral 2-0 in the third-place contest. With a 5-0 win at West Las Vegas on Wednesday, PHS posted a 3-1 mark for the week. First-year coach Laci Lozoya said her t...

Meantime, the Clovis boys finished with 59 points and second to Hobbs (30) in a seven-team field. MORIARTY – Portales High’s volleyball team made a strong run to the finals on Saturday in the 16-team Moriarty Invitational, but in the end the Lady Rams came up short. Albuquerque Academy claimed the championship, outlasting Portales 25-23, 25-18, 25-22 in the title tilt. The Lady Rams went 4-2 to finish second in their four-team pool on Friday, then whipped Sandia Prep 25-9, 25-16, 25-22 in Friday’s quarterfinal round before topped Valencia 19-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-19 in Saturday morning’s semifinals. Texico earned fifth p...
When senior forward Nick Huenig found the back of the net less than two minutes in, it looked like the rout might by on for Eastern New Mexico University's men on Thursday night. Instead, Adams State put up quite a fight and it took a goal by sophomore forward Robin Vandewalle in the closing minutes to secure a 2-0 win in the soccer opener for both teams at newly-named Steve Loy Family Foundation Stadium, formerly Greyhound Stadium. The Grizzlies entered the contest with a...
PUEBLO, Colo. – Eastern New Mexico University’s volleyball team got off to a tough start on Friday, dropping its first two matches of the season in Colorado State-Pueblo’s Steel City Showcase. The Greyhounds were bounced 25-13, 25-18, 18-25, 25-17 by Minnesota-Crookston, then lost to Lake Superior State 25-17, 25-19, 25-20. ENMU was slated to face Cal State East Bay and the host Skyhawks on Saturday to round out the event. Crookston (2-0), which swept East Bay 25-22, 25-21, 25-20 in its opening match of the event, score...
These days, it ain't easy being Stan Hodges, Clovis High School football's first-year head coach. Following a 54-0 loss to Cleveland High School on Friday, the Wildcats are 0-3 and have been outscored 151-8. The last two of those losses have been mercy-rule defeats. After the game, similar to the previous two losses, Hodges maintains it's the grueling, early steps which lay the foundation for the resuscitation of "The Beast from the East." "I know that the best is yet to...
BERNALILLO – Down two quarterbacks at the end, Portales High’s bid for victory came up just a bit short on Friday night. Senior QB Uriel Castro was picked off four times, but threw for two scores – including a 49-yarder to senior running back Nathan Encinias with about five minutes left – and the Spartans claimed a 14-7 victory over the Rams. “It was a tough ballgame,” Rams coach Jaime Ramirez said. “We played great defense all night. It was just two big plays on offense for them (which decided the game).” Castro gave Ber...
