ARTESIA – Artesia’s boys swept the three doubles divisions and the Bulldogs edged Clovis High 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon. Artesia also won the girls clash by a 6-3 count. Artesia’s boys posted a pair of third-set super-tiebreaker wins in the boys dual, including a 3-6, 6-3, (10-5) decision at No. 1 doubles with sophomores Cutter Summers and Damian Lopez outlasting the Wildcats’ Landon Wolf and Cooper Harriman, and a 5-7, 6-2, (10-8) verdict for senior Ethan Bunt over Cats eighth-grader Ryan Case at No. 6 singles. In doubles...
LAWTON, Okla. – What started out as an exciting week with Eastern New Mexico University’s first all-time softball win over Lubbock Christian ended with a thud. The Greyhounds are now trying to shake off a five-game losing streak after dropping Sunday’s series finale to Cameron 8-5. The Aggies now lead the all-time series with ENMU 35-6-1. Cameron (9-8, 9-7 LSC) scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to pull out Sunday’s tilt, capped by a double steal which produced the final run. Junior right-hander Emma Souther...
TEXICO – Pecos may not be the same team that has been the most dominant in Class 2A boys basketball over the last decade, but the Panthers are still someone to be reckoned with. On Saturday, they rallied in the final quarter, shooting 10-for-10 from the free throw line in the stanza, to overtake top-seeded Texico 70-61 and claim the District 6-2A championship. Pecos has been in eight consecutive 2A finals, winning five of them – including four in a row from 2017 to 2020 and...
ROSWELL – Clovis High’s boys and Portales High’s girls posted fourth-place team finishes in Friday’s season opening Earlybird track meet, but nobody was going to catch Los Alamos. The Hilltoppers compiled 140 ½ points in the 14-team boys competition, well ahead of second-place Artesia (75), while the Los Alamos girls ran away with 157 points to 72 for Hobbs in the 13-team girls field. Hobbs was third on the boys’ side with 64 ½ points, followed by the Wildcats with 56 1/2, while Portales came in ninth with 13. Artesia’s g...
RIO RANCHO – Clovis High baseball coach Richard Cruse wasn’t sure he made the right move on Saturday in starting sophomore left-hander Joseph Hernandez. Hernandez gave Cruse more than he could have expected, though, tossing an abbreviated one-hitter in his varsity debut and getting plenty of run support in the Wildcats’ 11-0 victory over Belen in a six-team event hosted by Rio Rancho Cleveland. The game ended in five innings on the 10-run rule. The only hit off Hernandez was a fourth-inning bloop single over short by junio...
Apparently, all you have to do is bring in an opponent with a number next to its name and it brings out some of the best in the Eastern New Mexico University baseball team. The Greyhounds are yet to win a Lone Star Conference series this season, but they've earned four-game splits against then-No. 1 Angelo State and, over the weekend, fifth-ranked West Texas A&M. ENMU (9-11, 9-11 LSC) came close to clinching a series win with the rival Buffaloes before falling 5-4 in 10...

SILVER CITY – After racking up 125 points against Western New Mexico on Thursday night at Greyhound Arena, Eastern New Mexico University’s men posted their 11th game at or above the century mark on Saturday in beating the Mustangs 106-77 in the Lone Star Conference and regular-season finale for both squads. Senior guard Greg Johnson led four Greyhounds in double digits with 32 points, shooting 11-of-17 overall from the floor and 5-of-8 from 3-point range. Junior guard Tre’Von Love added 15 points, going 4-for-6 from deep,...
ALBUQUERQUE – Eleven area basketball teams, including boys and girls squads from five schools, earned their way into New Mexico Activities Association state tournament play in selections released on Sunday night by the NMAA. Girls round-of-16 games are set for Friday night, while the boys play on Saturday. Clovis High’s boys (20-8), District 4-5A regular-season and tournament champions, drew the No. 6 seed in Class 5A. The Wildcats welcome Albuquerque High (17-10) for a 6 p.m. tipoff, with the winner advancing to Wed...
LOVINGTON – Portales High's boys got off to a slow start in the first half on Thursday night and could never recover in an 82-64 loss to Lovington in the semifinal game of the District 4-4A boys tournament. Lovington built a 36-17 halftime lead and was quite content to essentially play the Rams even the rest of the way. "We couldn't get out of the hole we dug," PHS boys coach Randy McBroom said. "We dealt with a lot of foul trouble, and that didn't help." Senior guard J...
ALBUQUERQUE – Clovis High’s girls took third place in the season-opening, seven-team Statewide Opener tennis tournament last weekend, co-hosted by Albuquerque Academy and Farmington at Jerry Cline Tennis Center. The Lady Wildcats were a distant third – they had nine team points to trail Farmington (56) and Academy (54). In singles, junior Madita Ewert went 3-1 and finished ninth in the 16-person bracket at No. 1, junior Hansini Lingala was 2-2 and finished 13 at No. 2, sophomore Gigi Greer also went 2-2 and ended up 10th,...
When West Texas A&M scored six runs in the top of the second for a 7-3 lead over Eastern New Mexico University on Friday at Greyhound Field, it certainly didn’t look good for the Greyhounds. A couple of huge innings took care of that, though, and the Hounds notched a 20-10 Lone Star Conference win over their rivals in a game shortened to 6 ½ innings by the 10-run rule after seven. All but two of ENMU’s hits were singles, and the Hounds also benefited from five walks, four wild pitches and four errors by WT (11-4, 10-3 LSC)...
MELROSE – Suffice it to say, the Logan Longhorns are getting a little tired of coming to Melrose. Logan has faced the Buffaloes four times this season, with three of those games in Melrose – and all three resulting in losses. Junior Chance Brittenum hit four 3-pointers and scored a personal-best 20 points as the Buffaloes (23-3), ranked No. 1 in Class 1A, posted a 73-66 win over the third-ranked Longhorns (23-5), who are 2-5 against Melrose and second-ranked district member Fo...
Portales High’s girls looked to be in deep trouble most of the way in Thursday’s District 4-4A tournament semifinal game against Lovington. Lady Wildcats junior guard Aubrey Aranda hit a 3-pointer on Lovington’s first possession, and they never relinquished the lead in a 50-46 victory over the Lady Rams at the Ram Athletic Center. Sophomore guard Malaiya Castro scored 12 points while Aranda and senior forward Erlin Salcido had 11 apiece. Lovington (17-12) traveled to top-seeded Artesia on Friday night in the finals and suffer...
RIO RANCHO – Clovis High’s baseball team jumped on Los Lunas early on Friday and handed the Tigers a 12-8 setback in a six-team get-together being hosted by Rio Rancho Cleveland. In Thursday’s season opener, the Wildcats dropped a 9-7 decision to the host Storm. They wrapped up play in the event on Saturday against Belen. “I’m happy with the way the kids have competed,” CHS coach Richard Cruse said. “If somebody hit us in the mouth, we always came back.” Senior Jasiah Mendoza went 4-for-4 with a double and three runs scor...
LUBBOCK – The ball didn’t bounce Farwell’s way at the end on Tuesday night, and as a result the Steers’ season is over. Floydada finished out the game on an 11-2 run and the Whirlwinds posted a 59-53 victory at Lubbock Christian’s Rip Griffin Center in a Class 2A regional quarterfinal game. It was the second consecutive season Floydada has eliminated Farwell to advance to the regional semifinals. Prior to last year, the Whirlwinds hadn’t gotten this deep in the tournament since 2008. Floydada (28-8) won its sixth in a row wh...
CARLSBAD – It would be interesting to see what kind of seed Clovis High's girls would get in next week's Class 5A state tournament if it weren't for Carlsbad. The Lady Wildcats have gone 20-8 this season, but three of those losses have been administer by the Cavegirls (16-11) – by a total of five points, no less. Carlsbad had only eight points at halftime on Thursday's District 4-5A tourney semifinal and trailed by 18 in the third stanza, but the Cavegirls held Clovis to 10...
Eastern New Mexico University's men recently had a game where seven of nine players in uniform scored in double figures and the other two finished with six points apiece. The Greyhounds topped that on Thursday night, returning senior guard/forward and Lone Star Conference scoring leader Jahcoree Ealy back to the mix. This time, eight of 10 players reached double digits while the other two had six each in a 125-84 rout of Western New Mexico at Greyhound Arena. The result left E...
Eastern New Mexico University’s softball team got a big monkey off its collective back on Tuesday. No, make that more like a gorilla. Senior designated player Taighen Whitzel’s one-out, walkoff home run in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted the Greyhounds to a 4-3 Lone Star Conference win over Lubbock Christian at Greyhound Softball Field, ENMU’s first win all-time against the Lady Chaps. LCU came into the series 42-0 against the Hounds dating to their first meeting in 2010. On Wednesday, the Hounds were primed to make...
HOBBS – For the third time this month, Roswell High gave Clovis High all it wanted on Monday night. The Wildcats, though, pulled away down the stretch to take a 55-44 win over the Coyotes at Hobbs’ Ralph Tasker Arena in the tiebreaker game for the District 4-5A regular-season championship. As a result, the Cats (19-8) will host Saturday’s 6 p.m. tourney title matchup at The Rock. Brothers Jayden and Marvin Cox combined for 41 points and came up with some clutch plays late to help the Cats pull away from a two-point lead...
Eastern New Mexico University's softball team kept its hot start going over the weekend, capping a three-game Lone Star Conference series sweep of St. Edward's with a 15-5 drubbing of the Hilltoppers at Greyhound Softball Field. ENMU, playing its first home games, came into the weekend just 4-18 all-time against the Hilltoppers, but now sport a 4-2 record against them in their own park after their first sweep of St. Ed's. ENMU (13-4, 6-3 LSC) pounded out 12 hits in Sunday's...
Arkansas-Fort Smith may rank near the bottom of the Lone Star Conference men's basketball standings, but the Lions certainly didn't play like it on Saturday. Coming off a 109-106 loss on Thursday at Western New Mexico in triple overtime, UAFS stayed in contention for almost the entire game before Eastern New Mexico University finally nailed down a 92-85 victory at Greyhound Arena to clinch a berth in next week's LSC tournament at Frisco, Texas. Senior guard Greg Johnson...
LEVELLAND, Texas – The bad news is the Farwell girls' dream of a trip to the Class 2A state semifinals at the Alamodome in San Antonio came to an end on Saturday. The good news is the bulk of the squad consists of juniors, and they'll be back next year for another run. Wellington got off to a strong start and the Lady Skyrockets went on to a 56-44 victory over Farwell at South Plains College. The Lady Skyrockets (29-6) will now take on Nocona (34-3) in the semifinal round at 1...
RIO RANCHO – Four members of the Clovis High wrestling program represented the school over the weekend in state competition at Rio Rancho Events Center, and each came away with at least one win. Senior Fidel Madrid led the way, earning ninth place with a 2-2 record in the boys’ 139-pound division. He lost in the opening round to sophomore Justin Owens of Carlsbad by major decision 9-0, then came back to pin Mayfield junior Chase Kaufman in the second period and defeat junior Bubba Marrujo of Roswell High 7-4 before being ous...
ALBUQUERQUE – The senior-laden Clovis High boys swim team did well in Friday and Saturday's state meet hosted by Albuquerque Academy, finishing sixth in team standings. Meantime, the younger Lady Wildcats earned fifth place, and have high hopes for doing even better next season. Both squads had seven entries score in the top eight. Seniors Porter Kidd and David Reeb each placed in two individual events and on two relays for the boys, while senior Kriday Andiboina scored in thr...
