For about 12 innings, it looked like the Eastern New Mexico University baseball team was well on its way to a Lone Star Conference doubleheader sweep on Friday at Greyhound Field. In the opener, the Hounds put together a six-run first, junior left fielder Luciano Terilli went 3-for-3 with a walk and junior right-hander...

All of the team’s games so far have been against Rocky Mountain Conference opposition. LAREDO, Texas – Eastern New Mexico University’s Lone Star Conference baseball series against Texas A&M International certainly didn’t end well. An RBI single by junior designated hitter Nomar Prieto and a pair of bases-loaded walks in the second spelled the end of the day for ENMU freshman right-hander Kinter Logan (0-2) and put the Hounds in a 3-1 hole. They cu...

MELROSE – The Melrose Buffaloes were up against it – another loss and their District 6-1A hopes would be shattered. In all likelihood, they would’ve been relegated to third place in the district. Not that that’s so bad – the top three teams in Class 1A all reside in the district. On Saturday night, the second-ranked Buffs erased an 11-point, second-quarter deficit, outscoring top-ranked Logan 12-5 in overtime for a 79-74 victory. Melrose (19-3, 2-2 district) and Logan (21-3, 2-2) are tied for second in the district behind de...
LAWTON, Okla. – For the second time in Lone Star Conference play, Eastern New Mexico University’s men put together a furious late rally on the road, only to fall short. Cameron was in control for most of Saturday’s Lone Star Conference matchup, but had to fend off the Greyhounds in the closing seconds for an 84-80 victory. The result lifted the Aggies (15-8, 11-6 LSC) one-half game ahead of the Hounds and into third place in the West Division standings. ENMU (14-8, 10-6) still holds the No. 5 seed for the LSC’s post-se...

If nothing else, Clovis High's boys showed they could win a slugfest on Friday night. Plagued by inconsistent shooting, not to mention 23 turnovers, the Wildcats gutted one out against Roswell High, winning their District 4-5A matchup 53-47 at Rock Staubus Gym. Senior center Marvin Cox scored 21 points and may well have had a triple-double with rebounds and blocked shots. What shots he didn't block, he often changed. "We put ourselves in a hole early, but we found a way to win...
LOVINGTON – It's been a rough week for Portales High's boys. The Rams got off to a good start on Friday, with junior forward Paxton Culpepper and junior guard Bradley Aguilar each converting a pair of 3-point shots en route to a six-point lead at the quarter against Lovington. But the Wildcats took control with a 15-8 scoring edge in the third segment and claimed a 57-51 District 4-4A victory over the Rams. Sophomore forward Kayle Covington scored 19 points for Lovington (...

The Lady Wildcats (15-8, 2-1 district) scored 36 first-half points and never looked back. “We just didn’t come ready to play,” Lady Rams coach Wade Fraze said. “We didn’t play...

Coming in with little to lose and pretty much everything to gain, Fort Sumner gave Clovis High's boys a pretty good fight most of the way. In the end, though, the Wildcats had a bit too much depth, length and athleticism for the defending Class 1A state champion Foxes, and they pulled away behind a triple-double from 6-foot-7 senior center Marvin Cox for a 68-54 victory in Saturday's matchup at Rock Staubus Gym. Cox finished with 16 points, 21 rebounds and 10 blocks,...

Losing a series finale is always difficult. In this case, though, Eastern New Mexico University's baseball team came away feeling pretty good – despite an 8-0 setback on Sunday – after splitting a season-opening, four-game Lone Star Conference set against top-ranked and defending NCAA Division II champion Angelo State at Greyhound Field. That's certainly better than last year, when the Greyhounds were routed in four games by a combined score of 39-6 to open the campaign at San...
No Jahcoree Ealy? At least so far, no problem for Eastern New Mexico University's men. While Ealy – the Lone Star Conference scoring leader – awaits a ruling on what Greyhounds coach Brent Owen has termed "an NCAA situation," ENMU went about its business in impressive fashion over the weekend, capped by Saturday's 95-82 victory over Texas-Permian Basin at Greyhound Arena. It's not to say the Hounds won't need Ealy back; they're obviously much better off with him. Owen sai...
