Seniors Gabriel Nieto (14) and Miguel Lopez (11) paced Bovina (1-9), which led 10-7 at the quarter and steadily pulled away against the Longhorns (2-6). Junior Dominique Dominguez tallied 13 points for Hart. Also on Fri...
CARRIZOZO – Clovis Christian’s girls saw their early-season winning streak come to an end on Thursday night with a 38-36 loss to Carrizozo. The Lady Grizzlies (2-4) built a nine-point led with a strong third quarter, then won down the stretch after CCS (3-1) tied it 30-30 midway through the final stanza. Junior Bryana Villanueva scored 12 points and freshman Millie Turnbow chipped in 11 for Carrizozo. Freshman Hannah McKay led the Lady Eagles with eight points, while senior Allison McRaven and sophomore Lauren Weaver chi...

MELROSE – Nothing like starting off your season with a 30-point quarter. Melrose’s boys, playing for the first time after winning the 8-man state football championship nearly a month ago, showed no signs of rust in rolling past Mountainair 80-33 in Thursday’s quarterfinal round of the American Bank Tournament. Meantime, the Lady Buffs also made short work of their Mountainair opposition, trouncing the Lady Mustangs 69-34. Junior Chance Brittenum scored a personal-best 18 points to lead four Buffs in double digits. Junio...
DORA – Juniors Ashton Davis and Aaron Combs combined for 35 points on Saturday, helping Dora defeat Elida 58-44 in the boys' third-place game of the J.P. Stone Invitational. Davis scored 18 points and Combs had 17 for the Coyotes (2-1), who opened a 13-point halftime lead by outscoring the Tigers 13-3 in the second quarter. Elida (1-2) made a game of it, pulling to 35-30 by the end of the third stanza, before the Coyotes pulled away down the stretch. Logan claimed the tourname...
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – 'Tis the season for broncs and bulls, riding and roping. The Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is back. The 65th NFR is celebrating its 38th year in Vegas. It begins Thursday and lasts through Dec. 16 at the Thomas & Mack Center. Clovis native Shad Mayfield has qualified again in tie-down roping. He comes in with $206,603 in prize money for the year, second only to Riley Webb of Denton, Texas, who has earned $280,404. This is Mayfield's fifth consecutive s...
HOBBS – With many of their top performers not on hand, Clovis High's swim teams probably did well to earn fifth-place team finishes in Saturday's Reid Eagle Invite. Seniors Porter Kidd, David Reeb and Kriday Andiboina for the boys competed over the weekend in the Core Classic at Garland, Texas, just outside Dallas, while the Lady Wildcats had four key varsity swimmers – juniors Julia Spears and Brynn Longley, sophomore Claire Pella and freshman Molly Kidd – plus a couple of se...
Senior guard/forward Jahcoree Ealy is off to a hot start this season, and as a result Eastern New Mexico University's men have made an early statement in the Lone Star Conference. On Saturday, Ealy registered a personal-best 31 points, shooting 11-for-13 from the floor, and the Greyhounds posted their second triple-digit game of the weekend with a 101-82 blistering of St. Mary's at Greyhound Arena. On Monday, the Conway, Ark., product was named the LSC men's offensive player o...
AMARILLO – Clovis High’s wrestling team had two girls and one boy place in the top eight in the season-opening Randall Ruckus over the weekend. As that old song says, what a difference a day makes. It did for Clovis High's boys, anyway. Coming off a season-opening, 15-point loss at Hereford on Friday night, the Wildcats rebounded with a strong third quarter to eventually subdue Rio Rancho 68-47 on Saturday at Rock Staubus Gym. Six-foot-7 senior center Marvin Cox was in the middle of it. With the Cats leading just 28-24 starting the second half, Cox hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 points as Clovis quickly pushed...
NAZARETH – Farwell continued its strong early-season run on Friday, advancing to Saturday’s championship game of the Nazareth Invitational by beating the host Swiftettes 41-24. The Lady Blue (8-1), who won their eighth in a row since a season-opening loss to Canyon, led 13-6 at the quarter and steadily pulled away from there. They were to face Seminole (Texas) in Saturday’s title clash. Junior Landri Richey led a balanced Lady Blue attack with 15 points. For the Swiftettes (3-1), junior Brooklyn Birkenfeld tallied 13 point...
JAL – Texico squads used big second quarters Thursday night to take control en route to a season-opening sweep of Jal. Junior Alex Fuentes tallied 21 points for Texico's boys, while brothers Blake and J...
Last year, Junior Hodnett played mostly a bit role for the Eastern New Mexico University men's basketball team. Suffice it to say, that's changed this season. Hodnett, a sophomore guard from Rio Rancho, is delivering key points – mainly from the 3-point line – and has helped the Greyhounds get off to a solid start. He was one of six players in double digits on Thursday night as the Hounds (3-2) opened Lone Star Conference play with a 103-70 rout of St. Edward's at Gre...
Portales High's basketball teams are ready to kick off the 2023-24 season this week. The boys travel to Eunice on Tuesday night, while both the Rams and Lady Rams will play in the Farwell Invitational from Thursday through Saturday. Only one starter returns for the boys from last year's 17-12 squad, which finished second at 3-3 in District 4-4A behind Artesia (19-10, 6-0). Meantime, the Lady Rams (14-15, 2-4 district) will be a bit on the young side but have more veteran...
LUBBOCK – Clovis High’s girls were stuck in mud early in Friday night’s game against Lubbock Trinity Christian. Once the Lady Cats – and particularly freshman guard Gianna Cordova – got going, though, there was no stopping them. CHS improved to 2-0 for the young season, riding a 31-point second quarter to a 68-39 victory over the Lady Lions. Cordova, playing her second varsity game, rifled in four 3-pointers and 26 points as the Lady Cats erased an early eight-point deficit. Senior guard Zarai Lewis added 19 points. ...
Considering just a few years ago Texas Tech was in the middle of one bowl berth over five seasons, that these Red Raiders are going to their third bowl in a row could be viewed as a significant achievement. Could be. TCU went from the national championship game to not being bowl eligible in one year. Nebraska, once one of the traditional powers in college football, a program that owned an NCAA-record 35 straight bowl appearances, missed a bowl for the unfathomable seventh...
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Senior guard/forward Deja Adrian scored seven of her team-high 11 points in the fourth quarter and Eastern New Mexico University’s women pulled away to a 57-48 victory over Colorado-Colorado Springs on Saturday night. The result gave the Greyhounds (4-2) their second consecutive two-game split in Colorado, and put the wraps on the team’s non-conference schedule. Leading 40-39 entering the final canto, ENMU outscored the Mountain Lions 17-9 to nail down the victory. Adrian tallied the Hounds’ first f...
Lovington used the run to keep Portales High's defense honest in Saturday's Class 4A state football championship game at Greyhound Stadium. Meantime, the Rams had no answers for the Wildcats' potent passing attack, led by senior quarterback Wyatt Gomez. Riding six touchdown passes from Gomez, including five in the first half, Lovington was simply overwhelming. The Wildcats scored on eight of nine possessions in the game en route to a 57-21 victory. If it weren't for...
Eastern New Mexico University president James Johnston has appointed associate athletic director Michael Molina as the school’s interim athletic director, replacing Paul Weir. A native of Overland Park, Kansas, Molina has been in ENMU sports administration for the past five years. Prior to that, he has spent six years at Cal State-Bernadino. Weir resigned his position at ENMU in October, and is slated to begin new duties at Abilene Christian as deputy athletic director and chief operation officer at the end of this week. B...

With an experience core to build around, veteran Clovis High girls basketball coach Jeff Reed is hoping the Lady Wildcats can reach heights they haven't made in almost a decade. "We've got a good group of seniors, and we've got our two leading scorers back," Reed said as the team prepared for its Tuesday season opener at Rio Rancho Cleveland. "I'm excited about having the opportunity to do some things we haven't been able to do in a while." Meantime, the CHS boys open their...
FARWELL – It was a mixed bag for Farwell’s basketball teams on Tuesday night. Farwell’s girls continued their strong early-season play with a 64-46 win over Shallowater. Meantime, the boys were just five days removed from a second-round loss in the Texas Class 2A Division I football playoffs and, with a couple of their key players out with grid injuries and almost no practice time, absorbed a 79-48 loss at the hands of Ropes. The Lady Blue (4-1) posted their fourth win in a row – all over Class 3A schools – since dropping...
PUEBLO, Colo. – Colorado State-Pueblo used two long runs to take control and limited Eastern New Mexico University’s women to 24 percent shooting from the floor en route to a 49-37 victory over the Greyhounds on Friday night. ENMU (3-2), playing its third consecutive contest in the Centennial State, converted just 13-of-55 shots overall, including 4-of-21 from 3-point distance, while scoring just 12 points in the final two stanzas. Junior guard Landri Hudson scored 14 points and junior forward Alisha Little posted her fou...
RIO RANCHO – Graci Odom has enjoyed a lot of success in five seasons with the Melrose volleyball team – not the least of which is three Class 1A state championships. The top-seeded Lady Buffs finished the mission on Saturday night, topping rival Gateway Christian 25-20, 25-12, 25-22 for the title at Rio Rancho Events Center. That gave Melrose (24-3) a 2-1 edge for the season over the fourth-seeded Lady Warriors (23-5), and also avenged a loss to Gateway in last year’s 1A final. Meantime, Texico captured its first state title...
FRIONA – Senior Cade Seaman scored 17 points on Monday and Friona’s boys built a double-digit lead through three quarters en route to their first win of the season, a 43-36 victory over Bovina. Seniors Jose Saucedo and Carson Seaman added 10 and nine points, respectively, for the Chieftans (1-2). Friona extended a 15-12 lead through one quarter to 11 points at the end of three and held off the Mustangs (0-2) the rest of the way. Senior Gabriel Nieto led Bovina with nine points, followed by senior Miguel Lopez and fre...
