SAN ANTONIO – To say it's been a rough start for Eastern New Mexico University's volleyball team in Lone Star Conference play would qualify as, well, a bit of an understatement. The Greyhounds were 8-5 coming into their conference slate, but on Friday night fell to 0-6 in league play with a 26-24, 25-15, 25-12 loss to St. Mary's. What's more, they are yet to win a set during that stretch. Against the Rattlers (8-6, 3-2 LSC), the Hounds got to set point in Game 1, opening a 2...
MELROSE – It had been just five days since area small-school volleyball powers Texico and Melrose had met. Thursday night, the squads battled through a second five-set marathon. Melrose, ranked No. 1 in Class 1A by MaxPreps, looked to be in trouble early in Game 2, then appeared on its way to closing it out in four. Texico, No. 2 in 2A, rallied back to force a fifth set before the Lady Buffs pulled away to win 17-25, 26-24, 25-17, 23-25, 15-11. The teams met in the semifinals of the Peyton Chavez Invitational at Portales o...
In recent years, the Portales High-Lovington boys soccer series has been dominated by the Wildcats. Not on Tuesday, though. The Rams struck for three first-half goals and held on for a 3-2 win over the defending Class 4A state champions in the District 4-4A opener for both squads at the PHS pitch. It was Portales’ first win in the series since a 3-2 non-district triumph at home on Sept. 5, 2017. The teams became district rivals the next year, and in the five seasons since Lovington had won 10 in a row – by a combined sco...
SANTA FE – Senior quarterback Jett Stone and senior running back Kash Roberts have given Clovis High’s football team a formidable 1-2 punch this season. With Roberts nursing an injury from the previous game and sitting out Friday, Stone was able to put the Wildcats on his back. He ran for six touchdowns, threw for one and caught a TD pass as well as the Cats routed Santa Fe High 62-42 in a District 5-6A matchup that wasn’t as close as the score. Clovis (3-5, 2-0 district) got the game to a running clock at 56-20 midway throu...
MULESHOE – In order to beat traditional District 2-3A Division I power Bushland, Muleshoe knew it would have to be at the top of its game on Friday night. Actually, even that might not have been enough. The Falcons, who’ve lost just one district game since 2016, wasted little time flexing their muscles and handing the previously unbeaten Mules a 56-26 shellacking in the district opener for both squads. Senior quarterback Dawson Jaco threw for five touchdowns – four in the first half – and ran for another as Bushland (6-1 ov...
The Portales High and Clovis High volleyball teams have seen a lot of each other lately, with Portales winning in three in last weekend's Peyton Chavez Invitational at the Ram Athletic Center and the Lady Wildcats posting a five-set victory over PHS earlier at the RAC. Tuesday night they met again, this time at Rock Staubus Gym, and Portales walked away with a 25-14, 25-17, 21-25, 25-17 triumph to extend its winning streak to five matches. Sophomore Myleigh Banda had 13 digs,...

In what has been a rough season overall for the Clovis High boys soccer team, at least the Wildcats entered their District 4-5A slate this week on a winning streak. The Cats posted their third consecutive victory on Saturday at Leon Williams Stadium, blanking Taos 3-0 to improve to 5-9 for the season. They were slated to open district play on Tuesday night at Carlsbad. Junior forward Ihab Mesbah had a goal and an assist against the Class 4A Tigers (8-3-1), who found shots...
Texico and Melrose had a chance to test themselves against some larger schools in Portales High’s Peyton Chavez Invitational volleyball tournament over the weekend at the Ram Athletic Center, and both gave good accounts of themselves. The Lady Wolverines (9-2), ranked second in Class 2A by MaxPreps, made it to the championship match and bounced back from a first-game rout to push the host Lady Rams before losing 25-9, 26-24, 34-32. Meantime, Class 1A No. 1 Melrose (9-1) n...
The first step to a possible postseason berth certainly went well for Clovis High’s football team on Friday night – a 42-12 domination of Albuquerque High at Leon Williams Stadium. Now the Wildcats (2-5) are preparing for the first of back-to-back trips to Santa Fe – separated by a bye week – when they face Santa Fe High in a 7 p.m. kickoff on Friday. It will be the district opener for the Demons (1-5), who are coming off a 62-20 thrashing on Saturday at Lovington. Clovis won last year’s matchup at home 53-0, ending it...
With two narrow home wins already under its collective belt, Eastern New Mexico University’s bid for a third came up short on Saturday night. Angelo State, ranked 20th in NCAA Division II, limited the Greyhounds to 106 total yards and no points in the second half, and the Rams claimed a 23-14 Lone Star Conference victory at Greyhound Stadium. It was anything but easy, but the Rams (3-2, 2-1 LSC) tightened up their defense after the intermission and made it a two-score game w...
TYLER, Texas – Texas-Tyler outplayed Eastern New Mexico University late in all three sets and posted a 25-22, 25-20, 25-21 win in the Greyhounds’ Lone Star Conference volleyball home opener on Friday night at Greyhound Arena. The Patriots used late runs in all three games for the victory. UTT (8-6, 2-1 LSC) broke away from a 17-17 tie in Game 1 with a 5-1 surge, then opened a 20-14 lead by outscoring ENMU 7-2 in Game 2 and then erased an 18-17 deficit with five consecutive points in the third set. Senior middle blocker Mai...

• Diaz, Faust get pick-6s as Portales pulls away to beat Valley 45-7. Portales High has put together a potent offense this season. The good thing, though, is that in those times when the Rams struggle a bit, their defense can hold the line. Seniors Devin Diaz and Layton Faust each had two of Portales' six interceptions – each returning one for a touchdown – as the Rams eventually overwhelmed Valley 45-7 on Friday night at Greyhound Stadium. Portales (7-0), ranked second in Cl...
• Clovis leads 28-0 early in second quarter en route to 42-12 triumph. Clovis High's football team is positioned right where it was at this time last year. The Wildcats went 0-6 in pre-district play in 2022, then found themselves going for a Class 6A state playoff berth only to lose 54-0 at Los Lunas. Friday night, they opened their District 5-6A slate with a 42-12 rout of Albuquerque High in the district opener for both teams at Leon Williams Stadium. The Cats weathered (...
EUNICE – In a battle of No. 1 against No. 2 in Class 2A, top-ranked Texico had just put itself in position to make a run with a late second-quarter touchdown against Eunice. Then the weather took over. After a lengthy delay for rain and lightning, the game was called before the start of the second half and the homestanding Cardinals were awarded a 21-14 victory in the District 6-2A opener for both teams. Last week, Texico also played in bad weather against the Carlsbad junior varsity and was awarded a 32-0 win when that g...
ALBUQUERQUE – Its District 4-5A slate is looming ahead, but Clovis High’s volleyball team has been on quite a run lately. The Lady Wildcats extended their winning streak to seven matches on Saturday with wins over Del Norte 25-17, 25-23, 22-25, 25-23 and Highland 25-12, 25-7, 25-12 at Del Norte H.S. It’s believed to be the program’s longest winning streak since the Lady Cats strung together seven consecutive victories late in the 2007 season under longtime former coach Darrel Ray. Senior outside hitter Kailyn Jeffers...
BELEN – Clovis High’s soccer teams posted a road sweep on Saturday, the boys beating Belen 6-1 while the girls notched a 5-0 whitewashing of the Lady Eagles. In the boys’ match, five players contributed to the scoring column for the Wildcats (4-9), who won back-to-back outings for the first time this season. Junior forward Ihab Mesbah scored a pair of goals and also had an assist as the Cats broke it open after leading 3-1 at halftime. “They were fairly young and inexperienced,” CHS boys coach Greg Trujillo said of the Eagle...
• Portales avenges earlier setback, improves to 7-2. Portales High's volleyball team turned the tables on one of the squads it lost to this season. The Lady Rams get the chance to avenge the other setback next week, if not sooner. PHS improved to 7-2 on Monday with a 25-20, 23-25, 25-13, 25-20 victory over Roswell High at the Ram Athletic Center. On Tuesday, the Lady Rams visit Clovis, which handed Portales a five-set defeat earlier this month at the RAC. They might also p...
• ENMU absorbs first setback of season. WICHITA FALLS, Texas – First, Eastern New Mexico University’s football team looked like it was headed for a loss. Then the Greyhounds stormed in front and seemed poised for a rare win over Midwestern State. In the end, the Mustangs scored 10 points in the final 90 seconds to claim a 34-31 Lone Star Conference victory, capped by a 54-yard field goal from junior Ritse Vaes with one second left. “It came down to the wire,” Hounds coach Kelley Lee said Monday. “We had chances to put them aw...
• Rams set to take on Valley in final game before district play. After getting through the pre-district gauntlet, Clovis High’s football team is hoping to make another run toward a playoff berth when it opens its District 5-6A slate with a 7 p.m. kickoff on Friday night against Albuquerque High at Leon Williams Stadium. The Cats (1-5), coming off a 49-0 loss at unbeaten Roswell High, were 0-6 at this time last season before starting district action with three wins. They came up short of the postseason, though, when they wer...
